BREAKING NEWS: Students march at youth rally in defiance of organizers (with video)

Lennox Linton Leader of the opposition saluting the students in place of the Prime Minister
The contingent of scouts which reportedly led the march

The annual National Youth Rally has been spiked with confusion.

That’s because after the organizers cancelled the parade due to the inclement weather, the students rejected that decision and proceeded to march.

Screams of “we want to march” could be heard echoing at the stadium where students assembled this morning.

They then proceeded to march in the absence of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who had already left the venue.

The students were saluting Opposition Leader Lennox Linton, who was positioned in front of the stage, instead of Prime Minister Skerrit as is customary.

Reports reaching DNO are that the while groups such as the Cadets, Scouts and Girl Guides marched the Dominica State College and Pierre Charles were the only schools that marched-past.

The Convent High School went to the gate to prepare their march and display but were barred by an ambulance vehicle that had been positioned to block the way.

The students later marched up Bath Road to the Convent High School grounds then put on their display and posted it on Facebook so everyone could witness what the students had prepared. The video is below.

Stop bring politics in everything . Us the young people are not interesting in politics as you all adults are interesting in it. We was demanding to march but the people in the government system ignore us and the opposition leader alone that was by our side hearing us. And up to this day our pm never said sorry or anything. We are a different generation, yes we a troublesome and rude at certain time but we know when to stand up for our right . And we hv to show the government is us, the young people and in fact dominicans that run things in dominica. Because at the end we the young people I going to vote just now and us tht hv to think to our self if we want tht kind of government or not . So don’t treat us like u don’t understand life as yet , we understand my pm and too the opposition leader thanks for being there for us .

If we had a cricket match between West Indies and India, the start of play would be delayed but there would be cricket say from 1 PM. But we have to understand it’ was the first day of the month and Skerrit had his secret appointment to worship his gods and when you worshipping these gods you must be on time and you cannot reschedule less these gods get angry and don’t deliver. So that’s why PM had to cancel the youth rally and left the place before the children. PM had to go offer his sacrifice to his gods.

“Defiance” can be Good. If the past generation were a bit more defiant then young adults would not have to live in a country that begs and prostitutes itself to generate revenue. We are living among people who appear to have Stockholm syndrome afraid to even attempt to escape the clutches of their captor ! It is our democratic and human right to speak out against what we don’t agree. Those who wish to emancipate themselves from this current state of dependency, oppression, victimisation and madness go right ahead and do so peacefully and legally. This is how leaders are born daring to fight against those who oppress them or stand up for what they think is right , fair and just. Free tuition was supposed to buy the votes of the young people? We’ve seen through the gimmick! Despite your best efforts there will still be those who think for themselves and will accept your hand outs and remove you all from power since it’s clearly gone to these peoples heads!

For all of those decrying the behaviour of the students yesterday, youth all over the world are marching in protest – against climate change (Greta Thunberg), against gender-based violence, against bullying, and yes – against politicians who don’t think the youth of their countries are worthy of consideration.

Too many people, including Dominicans, bemoan the lack of engagement of today’s youth in affairs of the country and world around them in favour of the latest fashion, electronic device or other fads. Yet, when the youth do take a stand for something they believe in, such as their efforts for the National Youth Rally, criticism comes raining down upon their heads (pun intended).

I applaud their reaction yesterday. If there is even one student – hopefully more – who becomes inspired to stand up again soon (student at the rally?) then Dominica will be in good hands.

    Signed,
    A former student protester

With this prophetic action of our young people Skerrit should now do the Honorable thing and resign. These young don’t understand the danger that Skerrit has put them in but somehow they were moved to realize that their for a better tomorrow is in Linton,. The present state if Dominica reminds me of the children of Israel. Because of famine Jacob moved to Egypt where he and his sons enjoyed political success with the pharaoh’s. But things quickly changed after the death of Jacob as his seed were enslaved for over 400 yrs! People of Dominica Skerrit has destroyed our future by getting rid of our jobs, our professionals and bringing in 1000,’s of Haitians and Chinese. Right now it’s pretty much China running things and we think it’s for free. Pm building houses all over for free now, but they are for his Chinese after the election. Like Chavez, Skerrit will soon die and the Chinese take over will begin. That’s when our children and grandchildren will be enslaved in their own land.

    What I learnt yesterday:
    1) Children are better at civil disobedience than adults. Why? Because they have very little to lose.
    2) Lennox, by his actions told Dominica’s children that he respects their right to be heard and will never turn his back on them.
Thank you children. Thank you Lennox.
All of you complaining about if Lennox had the “right to take the salute”. You missed the point.

  14. November 2, 2019

Did those adults who are so quick to admonish the young people listen to the young girl who addressed the world leaders at the UN on Climate Change? Young people the next generation is yours to protect please take it back from those intellectually, deficient adults who stood by and did nothing to make it better for you.

  15. November 2, 2019

    THIS IS SO SHOCKING.

I am sure that every student in that stadium has been directly affected by the generosity of the government in countless ways.

You were dismissed because the ministry put your safety and well-being above everything else. Including disappointment.

The Opposition, as usual, has swooped down and taken advantage of this. Just remember, what Roosevelt Skerrit has done, and is still doing for you, in housing, in education, in health.

DO NOT ALLOW your selves to be persuaded that this unruly behavior is acceptable or even desirable. And the brazenness of Mr. Linton taking an impromptu salute is laughable.

Did that really happen? Children, children, children, before you go out protesting for things, be thankful for what you have received. DON’T BE UNGRATEFUL and DON’T LET UWP FOOL YOU.

  16. TOO BAD
    November 2, 2019

We have to understand a few things here:
1 The PM IS NOT THE ORGANISER OF THE YOUTH RALLY
He is not the one who called the shots here, he is not the one to decided. and that decision to call it off is the best. It was not mentioned as CANCELLED it was just called off meaning postpone

    2. Having under the rain is not an option; meaning that as per previous comments, u cannot compare festival to youth rally. in fest when rain was falling u had an OPTION to to go in the rain or nor NOT. While youth rally the kids don’t have the option to do so,they MUST go under the weather. And kids with asthma and other sickness, you have to take consideration of that.

Dominica State College Students, I warned you all about Mr. Skerrit after your last graduation ceremony. What you experienced yesterday is only the tip of the iceburg, that is Mr. Skerrit’s wickedness. I am warning you all again, if you are 18 years old by now, go and register to vote. Vote in the next general elections for UWP, the party that cares. DO NOT VOTE FOR LABOUR PARTY. LABOUR PARTY = SKERRIT. I know you do not want to have to put up with Skerrit anymore, none of us do. We can have a free Dominica where your voices are heard, let’s do it together! By the way, the only reason you have free tuition now is because the United Workers Party said they were going to do it. We said it first and we meant it. Skerrit and them took the idea and ran with it to trick you guys.

  18. November 2, 2019

Well, I do not understand! There has to be something more to that news article.

Are they saying that for the length of time that they have held that “student march” this is the first time that “weather condition” is too severe for the march to go on?

Why did Linton remain to contribute to that disobedience, anyway!

Is it ready true that disobedience, civil unrest, vile, strife, self-pride, and pomposity, are the most deceitful products of his mind?

I’m not a Dominican and have no affiliation to any political party within that state.
As such, I must applaud the youth of Dominica for standing up for what they believe they deserved (an opportunity to display patriotism).
Those who argue that these students were defiant in their actions should be ashamed of themselves. It is important to promote a youth that can stand up to authority and have a voice when that need arises as opposed to being voiceless sheep led to the slaughter.
I am from a post revolutionary Caribbean state where it was students who stood and led protests and supported a dream.
I have always admired Dominica’s political history being the first small island state to gain independence and subsequently becoming a republic.
Finally, judging from the quality of marching and display in these videos there is no way these students are ill-disciplined.

For all the people who are saying that we young people are being defiant/disrespectful we are not…Last year it had the same weather conditions and we still marched and this year they canceled it when clearly the students of the numerous schools wanted to take part and school traveled from far distances to so taking away our time to do our displays we worked hard for is not right and I a student am happy that we the youth could take it upon ourselves and stand up for what is right and it barely rained….the day before youth rally schools practiced in rain working on their displays and eyes right. I do applaud us young people for taking a stand and for the cadet/scouts for coming out and drumming and such. Anyone who doesn’t like my comment that’s on you

Prophecies are being fulfilled before our eyes and we so blind that we didn’t even notice.
If I am not mistaken the last time Sjerrit and Mr. Linton were together, it was at that same venue, during a reconciliation service, the prophet prophesied about how God was going to exalt Mr. Linton and how he would be our future. What we saw today was another step pointing to the fulfillment of this prophecy. Skerrit had to call out the youth rally and he had to leave the stadium as a sign that he is on his way out. Mr. Linton had to remain inside with the young people and he had to be present to receive the salute because he is our future! Remember Psalm 8:2 ? Psalms 8:2 : “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger”. People if this thing is of God (and it is), we CANNOT STOP IT! Acts 5:39. Some are mad, some are upset, some vex but God’s word from his servant must be fulfilled

Please people we have not learnt the lesson of Maria. The earth is not ours & we need 2 expect the unexpected. We have not learnt anything at all. See what hapenned in Bahamas (7 hours (US) compared to 36 hours (them)). We have been ungrateful to the one who saved our lives. We chanted “thank God 4 Life” Did we really mean this? For the last twenty years, Dominica has been pregnant with crises and confusion. The country is not a quasi dictatorship anymore. It has graduated to a fully fledged autocracy where democratic norms are now history. This roguish government has the country looking like an eyesore and giving it one black eye after another. The people are deliberately kept in a state of perennial poverty so that they have to kneel to their SAVIOUR (Skerrit) for their livelihood. They then become everlastingly grateful to him, at least, this is Skerrit’s hope. This roguish government is hemorrhaging the treasury leaving most of the people to become beggarly parasites. All of Dominica’s neighbors have something to boast about: most modern international airports; world class sporting facilities; first rate infrastructural developments; a proper network of roads and more. An S.O.S. flag should be flying over Dominica.

@ Student, at that park you were not responsible for your safety. This action does not indicate “keeping you down”. The education of students is a priority in the policies of the present government. Some people may think it was a bad decision, but it was done in the interest of your safety. Do not let this cloud your judgement to see that was a safety issue decision. In other wards your safety was of great concern to the authorities . So don no get bitter, its not a life changing issue, nothing dictatorial about it. I look at your action to match as showing the authorities that they make a mistake. Adults, parents and those in authority make mistakes too.
I do not think one should pine on this issue. It happened, lets gat over it and move on. Do not dwell on this and let it affect your studies.
The people who are encouraging you to hate do not care about you, they just wish to use you to embarrass the government and make you lose your focus on your studies and education.

Janis H are u seeing? Lack of discipline even in the homes, schools. Parents teach your children to respect God first & foremost. When u have reverence to the Great I Am, Creator who created the earth, it becomes easy to respect others – your parents, & others – those who have been placed over you (Parents, teachers, Spiritual leaders, Government leaders & others in authority). Recognising that it is only God who is perfect & we are all apt to make mistakes. But if we follow the commands of the Almighty, we will be humble since God alone is God. And to reverence him, we will surely respect one another as he does to us. If he was like us mortals, not one of us would stand a chance. Time to throw away our complaining ways and be thankful for what Jehovah has done for us out of love. To be obedient to him, we need to be loving to each other. Jehovah appoints worldy government. We are exhorted in Scripture: Pray for all people. To ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf

Initially, I felt disappointed and ashamed that politicians would use the services of children to the furtherance of their cause and then I came to realize that this was a spontaneous event.

Interestingly what was demonstrated today reveals three pointers to me (a) Prophesy being fulfilled; Bible verse Isaiah 11:6: A child shall lead them and (b) It heralds the beginning of the end of Mr. Skerritt’s regime; These children cannot vote, I hear you say; but while that is true, they will form the electorate in the next five years and if they are that passionate about the way in which our country is being led; Dr. Skerritt needs to do exceptionally well in the next five years, if given the opportunity or face a more determined band of up starters who will stand for what they believe is right, but not only that, they are also fearless in pursuing their objectives and (c) It reflects the political temperature in the country.

Primitive ideologies? Why not look at what the bible says. The bible is the best history book for one to read. It shows how God’s people the Israelites rebelled over & over and were punished. But for Loving God, we would all perish without the hope. Nothing is primitive. From the beginning of time to now, we have been commanded to love & respect. Good manners, respect, will always prevail. Defiance, hatred, envy only affects those who carry those spirits. It destroys the carriers – all kind of sicknesses & deaths b4 time. Unforgiveness 2 causes heart attack because one carries a load. Nothing is new under the sun so no primitive. Jehovah is the supreme King of the Universe & we cannot fix this world (satan’s roaming seeking who will kill, steal & destroy). Open your eyes & pray, pray. pray for the nations of the World. You cannot do nothing without God’s guidance. We are nothing without God. Take note. All we need to do is repent & pray. Perilious times we are in.

Look at how all over the world students are facing all kinds of challenges, even being killed. Look at how students are dropping out of school, in some countries there are no schools. Look at the big picture before you go radical.
Please student you have a government who is concerned with your safety , your education and your future . Calling people delusional and accusing them of imposing primitive ideology is not helpful in any direction.
So you suffered a disappointment, get over it. Life is full of disappointment. But this one is easy to cope with so it should help your coping skills . If you do not learn to cope you will be blocking your mental skills, you will not see outside the box. That is what the opposition wants to happen so they can use you and control you. Those who want you to be angry and revengeful do not care a dime about you.

They were convicted and executed for crimes against humanity. Whatever orders one follows does not exonerate one from the consequences, unless they can prove they were not of sound mind at the time. Even then, the perpetrator can be locked up to protect the rest of society.

I am in COMPLETE agreement with the young people of Dominica. There are usually months of practice leading up to the National Youth Rally, and to have it cancelled after so many have made the trip was ill advised. The weather wasn’t that terrible, nor was there the threat of an impending hurricane. As a former member of the 4th Dominica St. Alphonsus Scout Troop and also the Dominica Government Band, I looked forward with great anticipation to parades, and I applaud the youth of Dominica wanting to perform and do their thing. Thanks also to Ronald Charles for bringing some highlights of the show to the world after the major News media had departed. WE THE PEOPLE. Power to the youth of Dominica.

    • November 2, 2019

@Lin clown, I can see what you are saying here.

For whatever reason the “march” was canceled, it was a decision of the authorities in charge; people have to learn to abide by the decision of the authorities, it is not our place to charge against it–like the conduct of those students.

The authorities have an “Authority” which is way above their own, we need to learn to allow that Authority to take His own charge, at His appointed time, not ours.

To stand against the decision of the authority, will produce nothing else but futility, which makes things even worse than it was in the first place.
What was the production of the disobedience by the students? Nothing but disdain and discord! And who wants that:

What is Lennox Linton doing there, saluting to an act of disobedience? He may think proud of his ways, but deep down within him, he has to see his own embarrassment; something that he does all the time–good Lord!

But the world in looking on. Have you looked at the picture of him saluting. Look at him again and you will remember a particular animal in a suite in a circus or a Tarzan movie. They will see primate doing a fake salute. Many will remember that he tried to invade a Heads of Government Conference in Guyana as an imposter and now as Head of Dominica. That is the same illusion in action again.
Take note of this, make a list because when the campaign begins he will be hit so hard with his record of misbehavior that he will hide like he did for Maria. To those of us who are celebrating the young people being defiant,. just wait, wait until they start being defiant in your homes, on the streets, at Church and elsewhere. Young people need to learn to listen to authority, we may not always agree but we must be respectful. The authorities took the decision in their best interest and if something happens now who is responsible?

What are we teaching them? It is ok to disrespect authority? They didn’t come there on their own, they came to represent their schools and as such they should obey the min of Education officials. I don’t care which party is on power I don’t look at this as being political.
At first I thought maybe they asked for permission to march however when I heard someone on the mic asking to stop and they were booing the person that is when I said that they were taking it too far.

If I was a Principal some of them would have a question to answer.

      • The Truth Be Told
        November 1, 2019

Student at the rally there is something called respect for authority. The authorities called the rally off because the field was very soggy. That part could not be seen from the stands. The Principles are under the authority of the Ministry of Education who called off the march pass. I too was of the opinion that the school should be made to march because of the effort & preparations done 4 today. Get with the times (the times are terrible times). Whilst the world is changing, have u ever asked if it is for better? The Earth & the fullness belongs to the Lord. Defiance, war, strife, rebellion cannot & will not change this world for better. Not accept your generation nonsence indicates the total disrespect for those who brought u here (elderly). This total lack of respect 4 authority is rampant in our society & sad. I challenge u to read the good book to learn the way that Jehovah wants us to adopt. Humility is key. Arrogancy (know it all) & the others is not of God.

Student at the rally I continue the earth is the Lord’s & no matter what times are changing only him can & will correct the ills. Mortal man is unable to do anything. Have u really heard all the news of the changing world? So many natural disasters – California fires, hurricanes, flooding etc. The only thing 4 1 to do now is to repent & go God ways. We cannot & will never b able to fix anything. We must first be obedient to the Heavenly Father who has given us directives. If we cannot repect the Creator of the Universe, then we can no one else. This disrespect sadly is rampant in our country. Adults, young ones all swear regardless of who is present. Disobedience is the order of the day. The good book commands “Children obey your parents so your life will be lengthened – or this is right. Yes maybe 2 the adults in many instances are 2 b blamed 4 disrespectful behaviours. In the end the MOE is top; Principals are over students answerable to MOE, students 2 obey Principals

    • November 2, 2019

I believe you have your comment wrong it is us the adults and those in power that are and were disrespecting the students and young people so stop your hypocrisy. I stand firm behind the children of the future and if because some of you are getting hand out to provide for them that they should just keep quiet think again, as parent they are not responsible for you but you as parents are responsible for them so take your place at the side of your children and be proud of them they will be stars one day .
