Dominica’s sole electricity company, DOMLEC, is expressing concern about the number of bush fires around the island in recent times, saying they are impacting significantly on the quality of service the company provides to its customers and causing damage to infrastructure.

DOMLEC’s Public Relations Officer, Adina Bellot-Valentine, said that a number of unplanned outages recently are the results of bush fires.

“The company is being severely criticized for unscheduled power interruptions over the past few days which is clearly beyond its control,” she said. “Just this week we have had unplanned outages in a number of areas particularly, Massacre to Jimmit, Glasglow, Canefield and in the north which has been as a result of bush fires.”

She noted that in some case poles had to be replaced because of the effects of bush fires, which further compounds the problem.

She stated further that while the company is sparing no effort in engaging its employees at any given time to effect efficient restoration to affected areas, “we want to urge our customers to be mindful of the damage which can be caused and to take immediate action to prevent or curb fires in their immediate vicinity.”

“When these incidents occur they affect hundreds of customers and DOMLEC certainly does not want to keep its customers without their electricity supply over extended periods,” Bellot-Valentine said.

You have to spend some of the exhorbitand profits you make in this poor country. Just don’t pass the cost on to customers after your insurance pays you off Domlec. Skeritt, please begin proceedures for government to purchase this company back, and make modest profit as all essential services should be run by our Gov’t for the benefit of the people. Imperative!

Put the cables under ground. Initially it is a heavy capital expenditure but one that will pay for itself in the long run. Nobody is telling you to do it all at once. You made enough profit- invest some of that profit wisely. On top you will create some short term employment for the local workforce.

Sadly I have no sympathy for Domlec. I would say to continue the bush fires at a more rapid and drastic pace but that statement will contradict my morals. But when I think about the profit Domlec made and my light bill every month I forced to not give a flying @$%# about Domlec.
