On what some would consider Black Friday – Friday 13 December 2013 – members of the National Bank of Dominica Ltd (NBD) Staff Activities Committee brought utmost cheer to R.E.A.C.H.

In the spirit of the holiday season, NBD staff made a concerted effort and contributed towards the purchase of food items and toiletries. A cheque was also presented to the organization to assist them in meeting the needs of their beneficiaries especially in light of the season. The NBD Representatives presented items valued over $800 to R.E.A.C.H. at their location on Bath Road.

Executive Director of R.E.A.C.H. Sister Henrietta Pond was very appreciative of the staff’s generosity. “Every year R.E.A.C.H. donates to the elderly in our care,” she said to the team. “We are very happy and thankful for this contribution from the staff of NBD and look forward to a continued partnership.”

Public Relations Officer of the Staff Activities Committee, Lisa Latouche, presented the items and the cheque on behalf of the staff. “NBD is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve,” she said. “We are happy to mirror this mission by playing an active role in sponsoring and supporting organizations such as yours. We are grateful for the opportunity to enrich the lives of our elderly through R.E.A.C.H.”

R.E.A.C.H. will distribute the items to the elderly across Dominica.

Yah this is all good and so forth but there is a better way for the Business community to provide meaningful support to charity and social safety net NGOs, you know.

These charity and social safety net NGOs need to come up with at a minimum an annual budget and plan indicating where the gaps are, if they are to provide the best care and services for those who need it. Then these business place and NGOs consult looking mainly at funding and other resource gaps. The business then pledge accordingly. That is meaningful support and good philanthropic practice. Not this adhoc business that the NGOs and the business now practice.

We all need to grow up and mature in Dominica…My two cents.
