CIBC First Caribbean International Bank, has donated a cheque of EC$3,010.00 to the Dominica Cancer Society, through its “Walk for the Cure” program.

The gesture was described by Cancer-care Coordinator, Vina Royer, as a “very generous expression of care and concern”.

In the brief ceremony held at CIBC’s Office on Great Marlborough street on Tuesday, Royer who is also the former president of the cancer society said, “It is with great gratitude and great pleasure that I am standing here this morning to say thank you to First Caribbean for this very generous expression of care and concern.”

She said that it is heartening to have corporate citizens come on board as the society assists in battling the deadly disease.

“We are happy when others share our concern and demonstrate that by what you just did this morning,” she pointed out.

Business Support Officer at CIBC, Rhonda Lawrence, explained that in 2012 the bank launched the “Walk for the Cure” program  which attempted to raise funds for cancer societies throughout the region.

“That amount was raised through the efforts of staff through different activities that we held and through some of our corporate customers who partnered with us,” she stated.

These customers are: Malcom Stephens and Sons Ltd, Green’s Wholesale, Springfield Trading, SAT Telecoms, Valley Engineering, J.A.S Garraway, Dominica Brewery Ltd, and HHV Whitchurch and Co. Ltd.

They had all partnered in cash and kind to make the donation possible, according to Lawrence.

I will do business with First Caribbean, next time I’m home, I’ll open an account there. They put all the bigger banks to shame.

The Dominica Cancer Society is not about finding a cure but rather prevention, screening, access to treatment and support (financial and otherwise) for all those whose lives are affected by cancer. They give financial assistance to those needing to travel abroad for treatment. I was proud to walk with the DCS this year. So many of our people and their families are affected by cancer. Let’s open our eyes and help each other.
