Clear Harbour could be heading to Grand Bay – McIntyre

McIntyre

Clear Harbour Call Centre may be heading to Grand Bay to boost employment opportunities in Dominica, Minister for Employment Colin McIntyre has said.

Government discussions with owners of the establishment employing hundreds of Dominicans for over four years are promising, McIntyre has revealed.

“While they may have experienced some difficulties in other islands, in Dominica they are expanding,” he said, adding that the plan is to take Clear Harbour to Portsmouth and use Grand Bay as a centre “so we can do more business here.”

More than 300 Dominicans are now employed at Clear Harbour, which operates from Canefield. McIntyre believes the establishment is a great avenue for people to raise money to further their education.

How mny of them do you see further their education? Most of them the money is to be flashy and bling!! No harm in that but the money is not raised to furhter any education. Maybe a fashion degree…But the creation of employment Ilke that…

Oh what a rat race!! Dog eat dog!! Some rather poison the investment climate instead of allowing Grand Bay the benefit of a few jobs. You ridicule us for voting DLP repeatedly and getting nothing in return, now you are angry that we are promised the possibilityof something. Lord help us all. If Grand Bay benefits, Dominica wins. Love your neighbour as yourself.

But honestly, with such a high crime rate down there…who would want to open a business there? I mean Grandbay is the center for crime in Dominica…the company should weigh in on this and evaluate if they would want to take such a risk. I mean a building at night left with several thousands of dollars in assets, yea a security guard could be left on duty. But a guard with a batton and some unused hand cuffs is not going to stand up to a man with a gun. I’m sorry buy Grandbay, just does not seem like a viable investment for that company

The buildings and sites in Roseau and Canefield are further away from the risks.

I think Portmouth would be a more likely spot for another call center since it is the second town in Dominica. Additionally, I feel that the community of Portsmouth, criminal and saint both recognise the importance of overseas investments and ways in which they can capitalise on the opportunity.

Sorry to burst your little bubble there pal ‘annonymous’, It is well known that Portsmouth has taken over Grandbay as the center for crime in Dominica. Just check the stats on the past 3 – 5 years, Portsmouth youth are even exporting that stuff over seas to St. Martin for instance.

Why you think Ross U is thinking of leaving… they already setting up in the Bahamas just in case the murder rate in Portsmouth doesn’t go down. Roseau is the only population base without as high a murder rate as Portsmouth, and by the events in Newtown and Fond Cole lately, that might just be changing. I pray to God it won’t.

New York is the crime capital of the U.S, business is business and are still setting up there. What are u tralking about? Crime needs to be and can be taken care of by the crime fighters we pay to do so. It is so unfortunate you are relishing in the misfortune of other parts of Dominica when your part has dangerous issues for business people.

Whay is wrong with you people are you for real? Could,nt someone leave Grandbay if they want to commit acrime in a vehicle at Canefield rather than doing it in their own community? Leave the people alone they will defend their right to earn a living like others.

The government has bailed out clear habour almost $1m. What skills are learnt? when the company don’t get more and more from the government and leave, like they left Grenada and St. Kitts what industry would absorb these people? government needs to invest in vocational centres and link with regional institutions, so our young people can be international recognised qualified plumbers, electricians, medical technicians etc.self-employed, sustainable and independent. Dominica is vulnerable to climate change, natural disasters, we cannot control but a highly skilled population can rebuild. We are creating dependence and helplessness. spend the money to create a proud and truly independent people.

Dude..for real..don’t talk about what you don’t know

Anyone who works at Clearharbour can go anywhere and get a job. Believe me. Workers are trained in customer service and have to ACCOUNT for all they do. These people deal with some real irritable customers and have to be pleasant and respectable at all times….they learn time management…
which is something very important to any profitable business venture

Skills training is all well and good but don’t diss Clearharbour for helping persons in Dominica (especially the youth) make a good life for themselves.

    April 20, 2011

I believe folks need to look at this from a national development standpoint….especially as it relates to job creation and economic growth………there is already a lot happening in the northern part of the country and still potential for more.

Thus I think the suggested move to Grand Bay, will open the door to more “balanced” economic growth (for want of a better term).

And in response to “From a Business Standpoint”: what is so immature about that announcement? FYI the Clear Harbour People held a job fair up there on Saturday where hundreds of young interested people attended (did you know that fool??), and where all the information was given at that forum…….especially as it relates to the POSSIBILITY of they moving there……which is exactly what the Minister said.

  11. From A Business Stand Point.
    April 20, 2011

I think it is very immature of the government to go about spreading this information when the company has not made a decision on this. They may be getting the people of Grand Bay and the south hopes up for nothing. They are looking at grand bay and portsmouth…. The government is trying to push them to grand bay because all we keep hearing is that they might open up in grand bay but the government is not talking about portsmouth all… Portsmouth, vielle case, thibaud, calibishie, dublanc, bioche, tan tan, paix bouche and the surrounding areas have a larger population. Its a smarter move for Clear Harbor to move to portsmouth from the business stand point. They have a larger catchment area down there and so they are able to grow alot quicker down there. The amount of people they can hire in the south is limited. Besides…. I know people from Grand Bay who are employed at Clear Harbor right now, so its not like the opportunity was not there for them.

    • clairvoyance
      April 20, 2011

that doesnt make sense, there are people from those areas in the north working at clear harbor also, so the opportunity was there for them to..and what does growth have to do with it when the companies market is outside of dominica? like the north, there is petitie savanne, pichlen, bagatelle, tetemorne/ morne tin/bordeaux, delices, la plaine….so that crap about the population makes no sense either….the smart move is what clear harbor gets from the government in return for going to either of these locations.. which offer is to the best interest of the companie long term or short term.

      • Le Boucher
        April 20, 2011

I agree with clairvoyance. Populationwise, the southern half of Dominica is more populated than the northern half. Get your facts straight.

      April 20, 2011

I Agree with ‘from a business stand point’ i mean come on people why in the world would someone open a business in Grand bay?? come on tell me,this place is not fit for anything good, except the transpoint for ganja, period, and who vex can lost..its my democratic right to express my self…and DNO you better approved! please do not bring clear harbour to this place…please.!

    • NRT
      April 20, 2011

That’s good you Tell it like it is ‘clairvoyance’, that’s a poor thing for this Dominical to say. This may be insider information that the person who post as ‘From A Business Stand Point’ could not keep from divulging,,,maybe.

It has been known that Gov’t ministers lobby hard for projects and sometimes make sinister arguments against another minister’s constituency so that they can get it for their district. As a result they rather have killed the All Saints Medical School project rather than have John Fabien get the ‘project’ in the GrandBay district; which by the way, would have been a smart move diversifying job opportunities around Dominica.

Ian got the hotel project diverted from Marigot to the Portsmouth area right? What’s the big deal. There should be no argument, I wouldn’t mind job opportunities go to any part of the island.

Happy to hear that… also i think they should put down the limit at clear habour… from 18 to 17.. so at list young ppl that finish up school and dont have enough money to go to collage can get a chance to work and save some money.. just asking….

  17. NRT
    April 20, 2011

Most appropriate move. And the Medical school too…..There is already a location for it in the area of the new police station. A win-win situation if security is ever a concern. Thanks to both doctors.

That’s good news for Grandbay and DA on a whole but does the government have any measures to protect our people from a situation similar to what happened in St.Kitts? These companies are know to close up shop in a matters of minutes once thier tax holiday nears it’s end. 300 people were out of works in minutes in St. Kitts. Lets hope that the 700+ people employed by this company do not have to go through that same feat in DA. I trust that the government is on top of this.

      April 20, 2011

Number 1. Clear Harbor St.Kitts did not employ 300 people. There were no more than 150 people employed at the St.Kitts center.
Number 2. The Clear Harbor St.Kitts employees were under performing for an entire year and more. In a center with 150 people employed there were days when only 50 people would show up for work putting the company under serious strain. They were warned that should they not improve on their attendance and performance their could be a serious backlash. THEY NEVER TOOK HEED!!!

U do not make any sense, it creates employment whether it is in the north south east or west, that is what we want, U would be surprise to know how many of our people up there that are unemployed.
