DAIC cannot confirm resignations linked to statement

Joseph

The Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC) is not confirming that its statement on the matter surrounding a call for the boycott of O.D. Brisbane & Sons is the reason for the resignation of some of its board members.

Some members of the board opted to step down after the DAIC let its voice heard on the matter, but the organization says reasons were not given for the resignation.

“There have been some resignations from the DAIC board of directors. The reasons for the resignation were not generally given,” said DAIC Chief Executive Officer Archille Joseph.

A member of the DAIC Board can simply state to executives that he no longer wishes to be a member, Joseph said.

And suggestions that board members may not have been in agreement with the DAIC’s statement on the boycott matter cannot be confirmed, he said, as “some of the persons who resigned in fact agreed with the wording of the press release”.

A total of three members may have resigned.

The DAIC made its voice heard after Minister for Labour Charles Savarin called for Dominicans to boycott O.D. Brisbane because its Chairman Jerry Brisbane had written to international donors about their assistance to Dominica.

While the DAIC condemned the minister’s call, it said the entire issue is a distraction from more important matters facing Dominica, a response that some including Brisbane disagreed with, saying the boycott matter is a pressing issue.

This story shows how members of the DAIC, who are mostly involved with buying commodities and services at price “a” and then reselling at price “n”, without any risk (no known risk takers) cannot even agree on how to run or manage their own institution – an institution that is supposed to be directed and administered by intelligent people with one set goal which is to get profits at all cost from the distributive trade.

They however want to tell or rather dictate to the government how to run a country. They seem to know all the answers for responding to the needs of the public. Unlike the DAIC with only one interest (proft at all cost) government is not a profit making business. Government has a myriad of competing social interests to satisfy, all clamoring to be satisfied at the same time. In fact certain members of the DAIC acting onthier own or with the tacit support of the DAIC as an organization have gone on the record to chastise government for responding to soem of these social needs. theyhave joined the opposition to label certain government programs as promoting “mendicancy”.

The resources available to government to do that are very limited. So members of the DAIC particularly Trevor, Jerry, Issa, Robert etc must first help the DAIC put its house in order and to be that shining example of a good corporate and social service provider before venturing to hold government to task in its response to the country’s development programs. Look at the private sector here and given all the incentives that government has in place for encouraging people to get into investments for developing Dominica. can we say that the local private sector has responded positively except to continue “buying and selling?’

Lennox Linton was the one who brought this up on his show so he should be able to provide proof. What I know is that most Dominican would give a kickback if there is something BIG in it for them.

  7. Pressing Issues
    December 9, 2010

Please interview and ask the CEO and President of the DAIC these questions:

WHAT ARE THE OTHER PRESSING ISSUES?
WHAT HAVE THEY ARTICULATED ABOUT THESE OTHER PRESSING ISSUES?
    WHAT RESPONSE THEY HAVE RECEIVED?
WHAT DO THEY PLAN TO DO IF NOTHING OR LITTLE IS DONE ABOUT THE PRESSING ISSUES?

You do not know of the important issues facing our country? Shame on you! I suggest you read the newspapers coming off the local press on a weekly basis. Honestly, I don’t think the average Dominican need the DAIC to spell out those pressing issues, we all know them. I think the DAIC’s point is that we need to focus on the many pressing issues facing our country and not major in minors. There have been calls for boycotts dating back to the 70’s. Just a few yrs ago, Mr. Thomas Letang was threatening boycott of the private sector simply because the DAIC supported the reform and austerity measures imposed by the Pierre Charles administration. The PSU even opened a retail business on the site of their HQ to put substance to their threats. Boycotts are nothing new in Dominica. Krazy Tee even advised one on Astaphan when he thought the company supported the labour administration and he, Krazy Tee, was a UWP supporter.
So I agree with the DAIC. Boycotts are not successful in Dominica so let’s not waste time on the stupidity of the Minister’s boycott call. Both he and his call will fall in a ditch.
