In an effort to create awareness among exporters and potential exporters of the benefits of the intellectual property system, the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA) is hosting a two (2) day seminar on Intellectual Property.
This is in keeping with the National Export Strategy’s objective to transform Dominica’s economic sectors into export growth sectors by focusing on the strengths and opportunities of producers of goods and services in Dominica. The seminar will examine the industrial properties on the one hand – Trademarks, Geographical Indicators, Patents, Industrial design, The Protection of New Plant Varieties and Copyright on the other hand.
There is increasing realization worldwide that Intellectual Property rights are major drivers of innovation and growth in addition to their role as sources of Employment, Income and Trade.
In a study carried out by the European Patent Office and the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market it was discovered that in the period 2008 to 2010 industries that used intellectual property rights intensively contributed 26% of Employment and 39% of GDP in the European Union. These industries also accounted for most of the EU’s trade with rest of world, while paying wages that were more than 40% higher than the average wage.
It is believed that Dominica can use the intellectual property rights system to boost its economic prospects, but in order to do this the business community including farmers, manufacturers, traders, and cultural industry practitioners need to have a basic grasp of intellectual property rights and how they can be harnessed for business purposes.
As such the seminar targets manufacturers, agro-processors, farmers and practitioners in the cultural Industries (craft, audio-visual production, music, film) as well as other producers of goods and services of every sort.
The seminar is scheduled for Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th June 2015, from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Fort Young Hotel and will be facilitated by Mc Carthy MARIE.

“There is increasing realization worldwide that Intellectual Property rights are major drivers of innovation and growth in addition to their role as sources of Employment, Income and Trade.”
This is presented as a statement of fact, when in reality it is rather controversial. There’s good evidence that international enforcement of copyright and patent is to the benefit of corporations in wealthy countries, but to the overall detriment of most people in economically developing countries.
If nothing else, policymakers should consider enacting very strong and clearly delineated fair dealing provisions for educational use of copyrighted materials.
Every government Ministry should attend…This seminar is about identifying valuables that we own and we are not aware…wake up.
That Dexia is an institution which should be closed instead of sending home PWC Employees
