DFC wants more corporate sponsors for Miss Dominica Pageant

Clarke-Meade

The Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) has said it is optimistic that sponsorship towards the Miss Dominica Pageant will intensify following the Christmas season.

So far only one contestant has received full corporate sponsorship.

Events Director of the Dominica Festival Committee, Nathalie Clarke-Meade, said presently most sponsors are giving support only in part.

She says however, full sponsorship is essential towards the staging of the Miss Dominica Pageant carded for February 8.

“Most of the sponsorship that has been coming in is in part. We are still waiting to see full sponsorship. As you know we are in the Christmas season and I am not sure whether people are taking us on our sponsorship drive. Hopefully once the season is over, we will see a different drive,” Clarke-Meade said on Monday.

She said she hopes to see full sponsorship coming in by the beginning of the new year. “Right now, businesses are gearing up for Christmas excitement and as soon as January comes, we should see sponsorship rolling in,” she said.

Meade said it would be in the interest of the business community to fully sponsor one of the contestants. “The value would be for 12 months and beyond,” she argued.

Last week Dutch Lady Power Shake in partnership with J.Astaphan & Co. Ltd announced that it will provide full sponsorship, valued at $15,500 in cash and kind, to one of the pageant contestants, Jeanne Royer.

Ok being a former Ms. Dominica in my days sponsorship for the show wasn’t in that excess hence i understand cost of living increases etc. but the segments of the show has been down graded i remember back in my days the most taxing expense was costume and then has since down graded this element of the show so why is it costing $15 plus thousand dollars for sponsorship? And time and time again the question has come to play why do the contestants have to pay a service fee to the DFC from the funds receive from the sponsors for the different segments. DFC being the organizers of the show needs to cover the staging cost seeing its a really expensive process going up for a competition of that nature hence the contestant still have to come out of pocket to cover unforeseen expenses. I keep saying this whole queen show committee and the different show organization in Dominica need an overhaul and have new well educated people in the ream of expertise be at the fore front in organizing events of that nature.

I really think that this lady is not the best person suited for such a position. In the 80’s there were less resources and there were much better results as it pertains to the queen show.THe difference was that, we had a very productive group of people who took up the responsibilty of that show. Folks like Mrs.Frampton just to name a few, most of the work was done on a voluntary basis and the results were endless. The queen shows both local and the OECS pagents, were the biggest selling shows after the calypso shows. Probably, Mrs.Mead, just do not get it.

Do you realize that there is still a Carnival Queen Show Committee which puts the show together – voluntarily as in the past. Lcak of adequate budget and interest from our corporate people is the reason we have this. The sponsorship of the show dropped long before Mrs. Meade came into the picture.

      @ ANNON,

Indeed if natalie and the DFC are clever they will go after all the non-native who are making it big, out of the scarce resources of this land. eg
      1. dozens of chinese stores in roseau
      2. chinese contractors on the roads
      3. chinese contractors on the government buildings.
      4. french sand/aggregate miners(eg Ghadakhan et fils.and carib sand and stone
      5. WRB(owners of domlec and marpin)
      and the list goes on…..

the same corporate business men you go to every year are having less and less whilst the OUTVESTORS, keep on exporting Dominica resources with no social or corporate responsibility attached

Give me one good reason why the spending public should invest money into a DFC sponsored event, when this organisation has proven over and over it’s incompetence in the handelling of monies.

They are making half a million dollar losses in the creole festival yet still they are using all kinds of justification to continue waasteing Dominica’s money into these regional artist and other companies who do the event.
If profits were made in the Creole festival this would be directed at funding the pageant. Governement needs to hire an independnt, outside of Dominica organisation to investigate DFC

In what way do sponsors benefit from supporting this pageant? Don’t get me wrong. All I’m asking is an honest question. One of the main reasons why sponsorship is always problematic in with regards to the Carnival Queen Show is because the sponsors do not receive much in return. At the end of the day it comes down to business. A sponsor needs more than just having their name attached to the show. DFC you must give in order to receive. I’m saying the companies are greedy, they are just being realistic. Everyone is watching their bottom line.

I’m *NOT* saying that the companies are greedy but they are just being realistic.

I think Mrs Clarke-Meade is not appreciating the seriousness of economic crisis. Very few companies are actually making money and the bulk of them seem to be struggling. Time is not for siwo but for finding way to survive.
