Dominica to seek outside aid following flooding

Car being washed away in Massacre during the floods

The official assessment is not yet complete, but Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has already indicated he will have to seek outside help to deal with damage caused by then-Tropical Storm Ophelia.

On Thursday, government officials and others involved in disaster management toured areas damaged by the weather system, primarily along the west coast.

My heart goes out to these people. Disasters are often unpredictable in terms of timing. But with a country like Dominica, one can expect to always have disasters. Lets hope the international community can help, but we also have to look to maintaining fiscal reserves for disaster relief, be it flood, fire, hurricane, earthquake or volcano, since the first response is likely to be from the island. I know there are scarce resources, but it has to be given some attention.

Where exactly is Mr Skeritt planning on seeking outside help from? I know it cannot be from the USA because he has been saying so much negative things about them and just about two weeks ago he further hinted his dislike for the USA. I hope he can get help from Chavez & China since Gadafi is out. That’s why the wise people always say to make new frieds but keep the old; one is silver and the other is gold. Since Skeritt has made himself an enemy of the US, I cannot see him turning to them in time of trouble.

ONCE AGAIN Dominica needs help from OUTSIDE places. Is there really no money that Dominica can’t help Dominica?

How dumb can you be.The America that some people like you talk about that is so sweet to live in in is debt. They ask for money from all countries when they need help,so the little country of Dominica would need help.Y’all are so stupid,it makes me sad that my people are that dumb.

“The competent authorities have to be a little more resolved in their decision-making in terms of authorising construction and settlements”

I am in total agreement with this statement. Too often, persons erect certain structures in certain areas without considering the risk, dangers or effects it would have if situations like these were to occur on a regular basis. And YES the authorities should be a little more stringent in authorising the constructions of these structures, and should be competent in explaining to persons of the possible dangers. If it means refusal order has to be given, then so be it.

Take some of the state house 27 MIllion to help us. That is what you call unnecessary spending while our people suffer. But GOD be with us.

Well, the Japanese are still begging for outside aide. This is a disaster that the government could never foresee. Maybe a hurricane yes, but this is flooded we have never seen before.

Actually they could have. During hurricane David we never had a floods like that. When you allow people to build anywhere, cutting trees indiscriminately and building on the river bed, these are the consequences. Guess, everyone wants a view. they build without taking into consideration the topology and landscape of the country, you want to blame nature, blame Dominicans as well, they aided the floods.

That’s different with the Japanese. They have a NUCLEAR REACTOR that is STILL just POURING out radiation over the world and virtually destroying their country and they can’t stop it on their own.

        Dominica has flooding.

Neither was a disaster that neither nation could for see, but both were disasters that both countries could have better prepared for.
