DOMLEC records increase in sales for 2009

General Manager of Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC) Colin Cover has revealed that electricity sales in Dominica are on the increase, while sales in other Caribbean islands have dropped.

Cover, who has been in the position for ten months now, was speaking on the first edition of the radio program, Power Talk.

“We had increase in sales in 2009. Generally electricity sales are an indication of how well a country’s economy is doing. It has continued to grow and I am sure it’s related to the fact that fuel prices did not get as high as they got in 2008 but by and large the company was able to hold its own in 2009,” he said.

Cover also attributed the growth to further development in the business sector.

“We saw a number of things. The Ross University put on another wing and we also saw quite a number of new establishments opening up including the new Kentucky Fried Chicken and Rituals in Portsmouth. Also, in Roseau a number of new businesses were opened. We also continue to see growth in the residential sector,” he said.

DOMLEC is the country’s sole electricity provider.

Actually folks its a bad situation. When demand increases, providing there isn’t a simultaneous increase in supply, will cause the price to increase.
Just think about it: if everybody wants tomatoes, but tomatoes are scarce, then the price of tomatoes will go up. Same thing with electricity. More demand, higher price.
The simplest situation that will cause prices to decrease is if supply increases.

This report is just a polite way of telling Dominicans that prices are heading upward. :)

All we need is some alternate source of electricity from another company to provide some competition. I don’t think the government should run the electric company because they will have too much control over too many aspects of our lives. Just think about the number of things we use now-a-days that need electricity. Just imagine the government telling us that we can not use them as often as we need to…not a good thing!

The government’s role is to invite 1 or 2 other companies to provide energy to the country. Geo-thermal, solar, win; while still keeping the traditional sources (hydro, and fossil fuels). Believe me, I’m not big on all of this environmental crap, but i think another source of energy supplied by another company would be beneficial to Dominica.

    I share True Dominican’s sentiment.

I believe WRB’s Domlec licence only has about 5 to 6 years to run.

Mr Prime Minister, that licence MUST NOT be renewed.

If fact I believe the PM should buy out the remainder of this licence and send WRB owners of Domlec back to Florida.

“Generally electricity sales are an indication of how well a country’s economy is doing”.

“We also continue to see growth in the residential sector.”

These are not words of the Prime Minister, Minister of Housing or Minister of Energy.

Dominica is moving in the right direction under capable leadership.
