DOMLEC reports profit of $7.75-million in 2011

DOMLEC – the Dominica Electricity Services had a good year in 2011, according to a front page story of the Chronicle newspaper.

The paper quotes the company as reporting a profit of $7.75 million for the financial year 2011, said to be up from the average $6 million profits of recent years.

Shareholders are expected to benefit, with DOMLEC reported to be increasing dividends paid to them to 8.75 cents per share in 2011 compared to 7.5 cents in 2010.

The company is reported to have achieved significant gains by investing in infrastructure, as well as from the use of what’s described as smart metering technology.

Record low numbers of power outages is another area of “success” being reported.

How on God’s earth that the Dominica Government can allow Domlec to make such a PROFIT (not total sales) on the backes of Dominicans? Can’t they do ok with about a milion profit? That way every poor malewe will save about $433.00 a year. That could go a long way.

But wait, how much TAX did Government collect from Domlec’s operation in 2011?

I think Government is the biggest benefactor of Domlec operation.

in a 70000 island population with about 30 percent unemployed and another 28 percent extremely poor, civil servants can hardly pay their bills.
almost 8 million, that is like $11071 a year for each OF THE 70000 persons living in dominica.
and there is talk that things will get worst towards the end of the year..
and i hearing some idiots commenting on geothermal where they have to dig for energy, instead they could erect 5 wind turbines in grandbay,5 in delices, 5 in pond casse and five in penville. these are the places identified as high winds areas…
I DOH EVEN KNOW IF GOD WILL HELP US AGAINST THEM CORRUPT BLOOD LIKE CREATURES.

Oh come on people! Do you know what happens to private companies who makes losses? Domlec isn’t a non-profit organization or public. And we all know about the productivity of these publicly owned entities with statutory boards. Profits are a good measure of a Company’s efficiency and a means of continuity…just saying. How do you stay afloat with 60,000 people? It is how it is; my people. So look for the energy star and research appliances before you buy them. Turn off your transformers when not in use. If your refrigerator is half your power bill then you should probably change it..do the maths. FYI, Domlec’s profit is rather minute comparing to other Caribbean countries in the same industry.

Domlec is literally bragging about their significant gains? I have no animosity against any company generating some profits, but their reasons for the profits are pure garbage. Smart metering and infrastructure? At who’s cost?
I have seen my bill increased to a record 41%, without any improvement in service, but the surcharge keeps mounting. The people are struggling to pay their bills, and they’re reporting millions in profits.

    April 27, 2012

Of course they made a profit! With their ridiculous stories of high fuel surcharge!!! The consumers are always the losers!! They should be ashamed to report such profits when the consumers have been crying for years and we only keep seeing increases in our light bills!! Let me see what’s gonna happen with the geothermal electricity! I just hope they will have no part in that or else we will be finished here!

when operating in a country of 60,ooo plus people domlec makes 7.75 million this tell you how high the cost of electricity in dominica

  19. high price
    April 27, 2012

No concern now about locals controlling our electricity generation. The same authorities and politicians, who were so vocal that DOMLEC should be locally owned, allowed WRB, a foreign Co. to buy it over.

That same foreign Co. partnered with DSS and now also controls MARPIN Telecoms, which was locally owned as well. Have men and women among us lost their reason? No more hooray about Petro Caribe come to reduce on our electricity bills and lower fuel at the pumps? Have bills reduced? Gasolene is now $15.60 /gall. No more talk about DOMLEC being locally owned? Now is OK?

How easily our people fall for falsehoods. Expect to pay a high price for allowing yourselves to be so manipulated.
