DSC boss says he has cut institution’s deficit

Peters

The head of the Dominica State College (DSC) Donald Peters said he has cut the institution’s deficit by over $600,000 and some of the issues raised by the Public Service Union (PSU) about his management may not be reasonable.

Peters said his efforts are meant to bring needed change to the institution.

The DSC has been running on a deficit of $1-million for the last five years, he said and “any CEO would want to cut that to make sure that the amount of money we take in, is the amount of money we spend. The union, they are not concerned with that. I don’t know where they think that we are going get the money. I have cut the budget by $660,000 in excess”.

The board of the DSC has met with the PSU on the basis that staff members were facing serious issues including effects of a stench at Stockfarm landfill, he said.

“How can I fix that?” Peters questioned.

However the DSC head has agreed that late salary payment is a problem that employees are facing. The PSU said last month there were salary concerns and workers’ deductions were being paid late.

Peters said that should be addressed by August 2012. “When I bring the budget in line with the expenditure, we should be OK,” he noted.

The college is planning to seek international funding for its programs as well.

“The board has been very cooperative to fix the things that went bad in the past. For the last four years nobody graduated in the school of education; this year we graduated 41,” he added.

I encourage the College President to lean on his experience of having worked at a US University on how to make the DSC financially stable. Is there an alumni association? What about supporters of education? What about an online newsletter? Facebook page? What about Homecoming Weekend? Get the word out about the college and ask people out there to support. I am certain that many people in the Diaspora would be willing to support a specific program at the DSC, but you need to reach out to them. Schools in the US are very aggressive in reaching out to the public and to their alumni for continued funding. Do the same and expand the fundraising efforts.

The large majority of our leaders do not care about Dominica and its citizenry..Whether you acquire knowledge of not is not their concern.

Mr. Peters I am certain that with all your cut backs and reductions of bills your salary was included in the top list of things that must be paid. Can you volunteer your salary for six months to help pay a cleaner for the school yard and other facilities around the school or even to pay one qualified lecturer for at least two months? I would like to be a brain cell of yours to know what you think of this.

That is just not true, that only now 41 persons from education has been graduated, even though for the past years it has not been so much but every year there is an amount from Education.

i FEEL SO UNCOMFORTABLE when im appproached by students who tell me about having to go in .CLASS.

wHERE HAVE VALUES AND respect gone to ?
They are seen with students on a certain weekend night all the time north south east and west as for those poor Kalinago GIRLS and other poor ones. Its sickening ! sickeing ! sickening!

While most lecturers are trying their best and are really prepared to go the extra mile…there are those who go the extar mile for something else……I thought that students were not allowed to be in d staff room but it happens on Saturdays !

I hope d president and management and student affairs department deal with such deviant teachers.

While the deficit must be lowered the emotional security of students must be looked into and safeguarded at all times.

i am afraid of some teachers you can see AVIOL in their eyes !

RAISE TUITION.. the board cannot expect to give FREE education.. EC$250.00 is tuition.. anyone who went to/going to school knows this is RIDICULOUS!!! how can the college sustain itself then???

do u know that every year almost 1000 students are enrolled into college? and only 2 to 4000 graduate a year? the reason?? cost!!!!!!

you have to be reasonable…. yes compared to international standards costs are low but if u factor in average wages of a household, you will see 250 tuition is a huge dent… and the 250 is only tuition ehhh..

1,000 enroll and up to 4,000 graduate? Your maths. teachers must be working overtime. They surely teach you how to multiply. Astounding!

    I have a question for all Intellectuals….
What good is an education, if you use it to manipulate and connive those who are less fortunate and dependent on you to be honest
….why should u have enlightenment yet in the darkness you lead my off the edge of a cliff???? If this describes you, how would you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10… with 1 being THE WORSE. because I give most of these intellectual slave masters a negative (-0) -ZERO
