The economies of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union saw a 0.6 percent drop in economic activity in 2011, although that represented an improvement from a 2.2 percent drop in 2010, according to Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Governor Sir K Dwight Venner.

And while the region’s tourism sector saw lower growth than pre-crisis levels, it did show a 4.6 percent increase in 2011.

“Clearly, unemployment rates and poverty levels would have been negatively affected,” he said.

I guarantee that the prospects are forecasted for us in Dominica- what have we done to grow our tourism. The reality is that the islands have put in place facilities and programs to grow tourism. St Vinent , St Lucia, Genada, St Kitts, Antigua all have international air access

Now it is finally coming to pass: The death of the agricultural infrastructure, food shortages, and a growing unemployed human resource.

If we never pay more than lip service to agriculture, then where will we be? Oh I know, economic slaves for the rest of our short, starving lives!

If history teaches us anything, it is that, whoever controls the food, controls the people!
Therefore, all the focus on imports, and foreign cultures has forced our young generation into obesity and heart disease, to name a few.

There is no easy solution to the global, regional, or local economic twists and turns. However, in Dominica we USED TO pride ourselves on community spirit, “kood-mey”, and back yard gardens.

I hope that we will start to wake up indeed; and realize that our culture is superior to any other culture that does not support self sufficiency when possible.

    STOP buying so much imports!
Use local produce, learn local recipes.
    Challenge your Parl Reps.
    Empower yourselves.

The times are changing, open your eyes, the writing has been on the wall for some time.

    Peace and Love

Dominica and the rest of the Islands NEED TO BE MORE SELF SUFFICIENT. We have a lot of resources here why are’nt we using them instead of them wasting. We are depending on foriegn imports , while we have so much of our own local produce here. We need to be more inovative and creative and stop waiting on other countries to do for us what we can do for our self. The Government need to seek out investers or help our citizens to find ways of manufacturing what we have instead of allowing the China to take over our economy selling those junk that is destroying our eco system and causing all kinds of deseases on our people plus putting our local merchants out of business. Dominicans we need to stand up. Stop having things push down your bellies. You are getting sick and dont know why. Stop using these toxic china stuff. Don’t you all realize that since we start consuming and wearing all this cheap toxic products that the rate of cancer and other deseases are sky rocketting in the country? It’s time for you all to wake up or you will be its next victim. Wake up guys and open your eyes.
