Fire and Prison officers trained in leadership and management skills

skillsFire and prison officers are now equipped with skills which will assist them in making the transition from entry level officers to supervisory level officers much easier.

Last week, a number of officers from both departments participated in a three day Leadership and Management training workshop.

The workshop was the latest in a string of capacity building programs designed to arm them with the requisite knowledge that would ensure service delivery and operational efficiency.

Chief Fire Officer, Josiah Dupuis, in addressing a certificate presentation ceremony at the Office of Disaster Management (ODM), told personnel under his command that they should now view themselves as agents of change.

“See yourself as an agent of change in your unit, at your station, see yourself as most importantly, an agent of change in the fire service,” he stated.

While noting that capacity building is an ongoing process, Dupuis urged those receiving certificates to use the newly acquired skills in the workplace. He impressed on them that the certificates they will acquire from the training will help them in their career.

“As you leave here, I charge you with the responsibility of change and if you take that responsibility, I am very certain that we will have a much better fire service, we will have a much more vibrant prison service. I am certain that in five to seven years from now, we will have a different public service,” Dupuis noted.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Nicholas Bruno, shared similar sentiments with those of the  Chief Fire Officer. He emphasized the importance of the prison and fire officers applying the new skills within the public service.

“What I want to implore is whatever little knowledge that you obtained during this exercise, that it is applied to the service that you provide. Without applying it in the workplace we are basically wasting Government resources,” cautioned Bruno.

The training exercise was done in collaboration with the Office of Disaster Management (ODM).

I am not impressed with the prison officers here. The fire fighters are ok but those prison officers need to be taught confidentiality and also customer relations. Alas

Again Disaster office is partnering with essential services’ thought I heard a former disaster man say those guys doh know what they doing but to me they are really trying and doing things outside of the box. Again keep up the good works guys.

Training??? Hope it comes with better pay. Both the police and prison officers needs training. If any of them abuse their power they should be dealt with accordingly honestly don’t. However, I “do not blame them” for their frustration, when heard what these people get payed I was disgusted. And you have those that are suppose to be making decisions for the country living large and being in places like bridal shows, happy hour etc. instead of finding ways to grow the economy and create jobs. I love DA but some things that goes on there is just sooo frustrating.
