Fuel tanker now offloading

Motorists at a gas station in New Town late Monday evening after news surfaced of a possible gas shortage on the island

Doubters who were not convinced by Ministry of Trade assurances that there was no fuel shortage in Dominica this week, can now heave a sigh of relief.

Trade officials confirmed to Dominica News Online on Friday morning that a tanker had docked at Canefield and was discharging fuel supplies.

The ship from Trinidad brought in supplies from PetroTrin to Dominica.

Trade Officer Ronnie Guiste confirmed that the ship had arrived earlier, and was by Friday morning offloading its fuel cargo.

Guiste also reiterated an earlier statement that there had been no fuel shortage.

Reports of an alleged shortage had resulted in motorists queuing up at petrol stations in the capital from Monday night in a bid to fill their tanks.

Both the Texaco Gas station and the McMillian Filling station at Castle Comfort had by Monday night  run out of petrol, with a similar situation at the 7-11 petrol filling station on High Street.

“We just didn’t get any gas,” a gas attendant told DNO late Monday at a gas station in New Town.

During the day, people were also having problems getting liquid petroleum gas (cooking gas). “No cooking gas and we are not sure what is happening,” said one seller of the product.

Late Monday evening chaos reigned in New Town as a long line of vehicles was seen stretching from that area past DBS Radio and into Roseau.

Motorists not on a gas hunt at the time who were just trying to get home, got caught up in the melee.

i am not sure if dominica has storage for fuel but if not, then one should be built so when there is a shortage or the ship is late the government can release it

Can you all remember that this Island community does not all live in Roseau. Here in Portsmouth we had no gas from Wednesday until it arrived today, Saturday. So we had a fuel “shortage” for 3 or 4 days. It was a problem, it is a problem that has happened before, and if someone doesn’t plan properly, it will happen again.

    March 2, 2012

This is simple…I say “Petro today?” they say “NO” I say “when?” they tell me “I DOH KNOW’

That, to me , is the definition of a gasoline shortage…no gas

@Puss though you may be ‘wrong’ now,, don’t worry… melee never used to be in the dictionary b4.. as admin has now pointed out… the thing is every year words we use as ‘slang’ gets put into the dictionary because of wide use and popularity… bear in mind the word melee being in freedictionary.com doesn’t mean it is recognised as formal english as Admin and other commenters would want you to believe… these so called dictionary sites will publish meanings of slangs knowing people are searching for them… now they make money from adverts posted on their site similar to how D.N.O is making money… so don’t feel bad… melee wasn’t in no dictionary 15 to 20 years ago… and the old english professors are no longer in control as to what words would go in to the dictionary as formal english… just wanted to clarify some things……

ADMIN: Check all the leading dictionaries and melee is in them.

hi admin… i stand by my comment… re-read my comment again… i told puss he/she may be wrong ‘now’ but melee in the past was not part of ‘formal’ english…. i stand by that… it is here now because every year popular terms are added to the dictionary off the strength that they are widely used… you can find ‘lol’ in the dictionary also or in some…. to explain social media talk… get my point??

8-O Dno seriously used the word MELE in a story where everyone can measure the level of wisdom one possesses …. i thought intelligent people knew better but i guess i was wrong? using colloquial terms in such an event shameeeeeeeeeeee

ADMIN: Melee: A confused tumultuous mingling, as of a crowd. (see freedictionary.com for further info)

ha ha. I love this! Melee is a perfectly perfect word my dear.

I feel you though. It’s just a few years ago I discovered ‘kibosh’ was an actual dictionary English word.

All along I thought it was local slang.

But to save yourself the little embarrassment, next time when you come across a word you are not sure of just look it up quickly. That is what google is for.

Eh Eh AS news item begins with Doubters????How Impartial?

    • uh huh
      March 2, 2012

DNO I do agree…that first sentence of yours there not too impartial nah.

especially against the background of your big neon headline “gas shortage in Dominica?” based on the fact that there were long lines at the pumps.

What is your point here really? The word “doubters” is right in place in the passage. Look up the meaning and look at the context in which it was used.

This is the perfect example of how Dominicans react and speak out on things they know NOTHING about.

Listen before going off at the mouth.

Don’t you people feel foolish now!

Blame the media also cause all of dem reported on the whole “gas shortage” without any official word, rather relying on hearsay

Hope the recently held workshop for media personnel will teach the media a thing or two, particularly in reporting ACCURATELY AND RESPONSIBLY and not acting on hearsay, a hunch or simply negative “BEFF”. This is not doing the country any good and is only creating and/or aggravating tension! The media is a very powerful tool which can either make or break a country. This country is ours – let’s be quick to spread POSITIVE news and discuss and deal with negative issues sensibly and maturely!
