Dominicans are being called upon to change their attitudes towards Haitian workers, particularly vendors who utilize the Roseau Market.
Haitian vendors were placed under scrutiny over the past several months for vending illegally in the City.
They were asked to vend only in the Roseau Market, a move that has prompted some hostility towards them by some locals.
“They are filling up the market and they bold on it. People like me cannot well sell my products and them Haitians all over the market taking up places locals use to have. Every time we disagree with them on something they would act wrong and strong,” a local vendor told Dominica News Online.
She added further that because of the practice of obeah/witchcraft, many locals are scared to let their voices be heard about what’s going on in the market.
“I hear vendors saying they not telling them nothing because is voodoo they doing, but me aself don’t give two hoots. I want to make a living for my family. I have been in that market for more than ten years and I not making any Haitian come and tie me up,” she added.
Meantime President of the Dominica Haiti friendship Association Roland Desire told a local radio station that he is happy that the Haitian Vendors are now cooperating with the authorities in charge.
He said he wants to see a change in the attitudes towards Haitian vendors in Roseau.

This is sad to see how ppl can have prejudice. You that are talking bad about Haitian and Haiti, did you take the time to really know Haiti and its ppl. Im always laughing inside when I present myself as an Haitian and see the answers I got. Nobody 80% of the time want to believe Im Haitian. If Haitian are paying their place on the market why they cannot be there. You, instead of bad talking, you should try to understand how they are able to that and do better or more. stop staying at your home and wait for vendors to come and sell you then come to the market to sell one lime for 1 ec. If you take your transport go to the land and buy your produce Im sure you would sell things cheaper, have better quality product and you would made more benefits.
Don’t be stupid, blame yourself and stand up for your rights if you believe unfair business is going on. Every body in Dominica are free to express themselves and make their living in respect of the law.
I myself was concern about ppl selling everywhere on the sidewalks and was for measure to regulate informal selling because I know what can happen. Like I said once you respect the law you should be eligible to do business as anybody else. The one who will wake up at 3 to prepare himself to go to work and will close his business doors when the last customer is gone will always have the advantage over the one who ready to close 10 minutes before 4pm or 5pm.
Even in the market all sellers should have their own steady customers who will never go elsewhere than come to them. Instead seating there and thinking : that is my price, u buy u buy, u dont buy zafe somebody else will buy….. Hellooo !!!!
I am a practicing Catholic, proud of my faith, beliefs and devotions and a great defender of my faith, at the same time being fair and just. I object to some of what you stated. Keep Catholic priests out of this issue for this is not the issue which is being discussed. Furthermore you are generalizing. Too many of you tend to deviate from the subject matter. It also does not assist the situation addressed. There are those who criticize and speak evilly of others. They are no better and in need of godly transformation. God knows this too well.

Haitain voodoo cannot be compared or to one and the same to God, worshipping Him, practicing the faith, praying to Him and to utilizing blest Catholic religious articles which are called Sacramentals.
Those who practice voodoo or any such rituals which are not of God and which do not belong to God will not receive His blessings, His graces and spiritual enlightenment.
God is The Only One who protects us and permanently so as we call on Him.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “You cannot serve God and others. You will either love one and hate the other.” Those who love God and believe in Him do not practice what He opposes and what offends Him as such rituals.
This is why voodoo is considered evil, sinful and satanic. It cannot be any other way. Voodoo cannot lead you and take you to Heaven or anyone for that matter. It is not something which anyone can present to God as being holy and pure to justify their entry into Heaven.
You know what else, I would fear those who practice voodoo and who deal with such ungodly matters. These are not people I would wish to associate with as friends. I would keep them far away from me and my surroundings. They can bring evil on others especially if they envy them.
At the same time, to be fair and just, people must be respected. The Dominican government allowed Haitians into the country and they have to be humanely treated in the same manner when we migrate to other countries. They are also entitled to this freedom.
The Haitians must work for their livelihood. If this is what they can do, grow vegetables, then so be it. I also recognize that Dominican residents will feel that the influx of Haitians can take away their daily bread.
They may be a good example to Dominicans who are idle and lazy, to do something for their livelihood. These could learn something from them.
The same applies to other countries where there has been an influx of immigrants. Citizens of those countries do not appreciate this influx for financial reasons and worst yet those who cause trouble and are a danger to the society.
When people migrate to other lands, they obviously transport their beliefs. Those beliefs are not always beneficial to their newly adopted countries, as voodoo and other such ungodly rituals.
Therefore, I would not endorse voodoo. I would not condone it. I would not applaud it and be complacent about it. I would rather fear it and those who practice it. The devil is in the offing. It is surely not of God. God knows this better than you, others and I do. He knows what is being said and done when conducting those rituals and who they are calling on. If they are calling on God during those rituals, they are committing the sin of heresy and blasphemy. They could cause a scourge on the country and residents because God is highly offended.
I pray that God protects Dominica and its national residents. I also pray that God will enlighten you and eradicate such evil and additional ones from Dominica.

It is very appalling and hypocritical of some of our Dominican people to abhor so much prejudicism and hatred towards other fellow human beings simply because they were not born and raised in Dominica.

Our people complain about Haitians taking over and that they should be deported back to Haiti. Can you imagine that? How would you feel if the whites say that Dominicans should go back to their country especially those residing in UK, US and Canada to name a few? The prophet Muhammad said, no one is truly a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. The bible teaches, do unto others as you would like them to do unto you. Where is the justice and compassion from the hearts of some of our Dominican people? Why do some of you clap, dance and sing in church, say Amen, yet you have so much hatred in your hearts towards your fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters in humanity?

We learnt about Dominicans going to Guadeloupe to ‘garde zafei,’ we hear so many alleged cases of voodoo practiced here, sometime ago, a Dominican lady was caught with voodoo dolls at customs right here in Dominica. It is known that some Dominicans are involved with voodoo and black magic. Thus we must stop the hypocrisy. Voodoo and black magic should be eliminated from anyone no matter his or her nationality. We are too hypocritical as a people.
Thirdly, ‘Haitians are taking over.’ Do you know what Allah has said? Words to the effect, ‘If you do not appreciate what you have or applying it well, GOD WILL REPLACE YOU WITH A PEOPLE AND THEY WOULD NOT BE LIKE YOU.’ This is what Dominicans are going through now. Many of us have abandon our God given land. We have forgotten ‘Apres Bondie c’est later,’ = After God is the land. We have indulged in our evil desires thus has caused a high importation bill. We fail to work the land, improve our Agricultural techniques and revolutionize our Agriculture. Our young boys do not want to work hard, they want to engage in drugs, kill their fellow men in Guadeloupe for quick money and material things. They have the bling bling mentality! Countries with an indigenous white population have let all races in and now suffer from multiculturism, ie minorities have taken over. The same thing is going to happen here. Our people forget when our own Dominicans used to go on Federal Maple and Federal Palm to London. Dominicans are everywhere in the World. Go and do a census and you will see how much. In London, America, Antigua, Guadeloupe etc. Haiti is in the Caribbean and as you rightly said ‘ They have Toussaint L’Overture in their blood”. We have so much we don’t appreiciate that others from other states /countries see to appreciate and make use of. I have no problem with hatian in Dominca. there are alot of Dominicans all over the world trying to make a living for themselves and their families. As we say its all about Caricom. however the problem i have is that …i personally dont feel that the haitians are contributing to our economic development. most of the monies they make in this country is sent back to haiti., so our countryis being drained of what it doesnt even have much of. i realized that there are more western unions and monygrams in this country than there are supermarkets…AS i said its not a problem having them there. the problem is there contribution to our financial growth.

My problem with Haitians is that they lie too dang much, always looking for discount or wanting everything for free. I went to a doctor’s office recently, one comes in to see the doc, asking the secretary if he has to pay, she tells him how much he then goes on to say he doesn’t have any money. When he realizes he will not see the doc if he doesn’t pay he tells the secretary he only has $ 50.00, when she tells him he has to pay the full fee he says he’ll come back. He lives, no more than two minutes later, he comes back and tries to bargain to pay $60.00, when he realizes the secretary will not change her mind he pulls out a roll of money from his pocket, pays the full fee, gives his information and waits to see doc. I have gone to stores and seen them do the same thing.
Those people think the world owes them something.
Bargaining is free my friend. It’s no different from our own vendors insisting I take some lettuce also if all I want are some limes! Take no offence.. There is always the option to say “NO”!
Hiatians need a market. Build a top floor over the market for the Hiatians. The city is already

To conclude, I say Dominicans have committed some gruesome crimes in SXM, SXM block all the Hucksters from coming to sell their produce and all the Dominican vendors on the street send them back to Dominica; in turn Skerit send all Haitians back to Haiti.

Insofar as their apparent revitalization of the local produce market,I think that’s a good thing; competition breeds better products, better service, better prices. That’s a winning formula for Dominicans, so I cannot see why consumers would be against that. But then again, this is Dominicans we’re talking about here; those are the same people who protested the more competitive prices of imported fruit at Save-A-Lot (grapes, etc) in comparison to the much higher prices at other establishments, somehow demanding the prices be raised so that they can pay it instead.

The problem is not the Haitian presence but the attitude of Dominican vendors who cannot compete with the Haitians because too many of them, the Dominican vendors, are often too greedy; looking for big bucks in one banana. It is the Dominican vendors who are unhappy and are complaining because they see the new competition as a threat. The Haitian vendor has had the same impact on the local economy as what Courts did many moons ago when it arrived in Dominica with Hire Purchase. Now, pretty much all major furniture vendors in D/ca offer hire purchase services.
The Dominican vendors are scapegoating and instead, should change their pricing and greedy ways. Personally, i only buy from a Dominican vendor if i cannot do otherwise. I either buy from the Haitian or run to a supermarket!

Any COUNTRY with an ABUNDANCE of WATER and FERTILE SOIL should be on a sound footing to propel itself forward. Agriculture is on the Back burner. The rural folks are bawling because of the insignificant investment in Agriculture and the attendant problems, e.g. lack of markets, low productivity, etc. etc. etc. Imagine hearing talk of Tourism as the main revenue earner to the detriment of Agriculture? Food we talking about. Food SECURITY. What could any Dominican do without FOOD? Our importation of food is astronomical. Millions upon millions of dollars are sent overseas to buy foodstuffs that could be easily grown here.
The weakest and most inefficient Minister in Govt. is the Minister of Agriculture. Doesn’t that tell us something? The Govt. has failed to encourage or mobilise Dominicans to be engaged in Agriculture, to earn a decent living. Instead govt. has initiated a policy of dependence, handouts, begging. It has instituted a ‘Corruption Clinic’. Even the Director of Audit commented that that Begging programme lacks monitoring, transparency and/or accountability. That clinic is designed to bolster Skerritt as a Father-Giver.
The Haitians realizing that the country is RICH with its SOIL and plenty WATER are making their moves, and taking advantage of the opportunities. It is Dominicans led by an incompetent DLP Govt. that refuses to see Agriculture as a viable development alternative. The Haitians are SMARTER than most of us. It seems our food security will be dependent on the hard work and involvement of the Haitians working the land. One other concern should be the maintenance of the land. This is not a personal attack on Haitians but I just want to point ou that in Haiti, there is indiscriminate cutting down of trees, leaving the soil unprotected resulting in unfathomed DEFORESTATION.
