KFC Portsmouth shutting down

Reports reaching Dominica News Online suggest that after almost three years of doing business in the north, KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) Portsmouth is about to shut its doors.

Staff there report having been informed on Monday that the company will be shutting down its Portsmouth operations next week because of financial difficulties.

Several employees from the fast food franchise will reportedly be affected by the decision (one report puts the number at 50).

Indications are that the employees have not yet received any written letters about the matter, and aren’t clear on how they will be compensated.

KFC management are expected to issue a statement on the development.

The company responsible for KFC – Fine Foods Inc., has already closed down its Rituals franchises in Roseau and Portsmouth, reportedly also for financial reasons.

To say the closing of KFC is due to a political party, the Prime Minister, or any other reason is absurd. The reason KFC closed is because they employ 50 or so people to do the job of about 15. The few times I frequent the store, there are four people working the front counter and you can see some sitting in the lobby or standing about in the back. You cannot make money if you’re employing all these people to stand around. Simple math. Take it for what you will, that’s my $0.02.

KFC closing – In my opinion it is not political, it is jsut that DOminicans understand the ramification of eating junk food. And so it si a very good thing. This now is an opportunity for a health conscious individual to set up a health joint serving good old fashion dominican health food.

    That’s all to it

I vex people losing their job but I don”t mind that KFC closing. Dominicans have to eat healthy and all that fat and oil not good for pressure and diabetes. And too much of our money going overseas. The small restaurants need that money to grow. Dominica have so many little places to eat and good food too, nice stew beef and chicken with some yam and fig. That better man. Support local

Sending a message to Zhan’s (Porstmouth). Please increase your inventory, or else you’ll be in trouble. I would hate to see something like that happen to a new business. KFC make three years, Zhan’s has about three month’s and clientelle already diminishing, so please do something fast. Would hate to see more people lose their jobs. Helping you to be pro-active.

So unfortunate! Why those a small chain(KFC)food franchise has 50 employees?
Nothing works out in Dominica from bad to worst!
Dominica also does not have that spending power and the population is too small, too many people are out of work. Heard that Whitchurh in Portsmouth is under financial difficulties as well? Ritual Coffee House close their doors.

Just when we stepping up to convenience and to be compatible with the rest of the world. We the locals might not like KFC or COFFEE but what happens to the visitors/Europeans.

Some Islands has two and three KFC…… look at St.Lucia, Antigua and many more to mention. Why things never work out for us or some foreigner always has to come and tell us why it is not good for us but in their country them have the same thing going.

    My people
To say that KFC closing have nothing to do with politics , is a gross understatement . Politics in the sense of government policies affects us ( both directly and indirectly) every thing that we do,eat , sleep etc. This i will not explain so that i can be brief with my point.

My point on this topic ( if the story is true cause i heard KFC rellocating inside Ross) has to do with the fact that our leader is lacking that innovative and creative talent to take this country forward. If The PM had such qualities he would have met with the owners negotiate some form of concession( reduction in coperation tax, 10% to 15% percent off the import duties, or using some of the red clinic money to subsidise part of the wage bill) so that the business remains open and workers remains employed. This concession could be negotiated for two years at which time the business may turn it financial position arround. ( This is a sort of bail out plann).

These are hard times and we need creative mind to get us out of this economic turmoil.

kFC shuting also negatively impacts social security collection which is already unssutainable and governmnet revenue .( abst , import duty and coperation). All of which impacts Consumption expediture negatively.

I Must also say that i tollay agree with all those who comment that the wages we are earning in domninica is ridiculously low.

And dominica is not cheap at all. ( any thing in a supermarket is more expensive in dominica that any other OECS countries). Not everyone has barkyard garden again. The prices the haitians them selling in markets in dominica is just below the prices that dominica produce is selling in other countries.
Everything Is expensive in dominica right now.

Those who talking about healthy eating are hypocrites cause the fastest selling food in possie right now is chicken and bakes or chicken and fries.

Haven’t heard anything From the parl reps of the consituecy where these workers are from. i would want to believe that most of the workers would be from portsmouth to cottage area.

Will the parl reps show some representation at least a word of comfort.
Anyway u all get what you vote for but i take back my x longtime.

    1) the food that kfc provides to us is very unhealthy. some of us have not yet realised how unhealthy so we have so many excuses. yes we will all die, but living a healthy life is worth it. kfc is bad food and this business closing down is a dream come true.

    2) kfc closing down is causing the loss of employment for so many of our people and thats bad. losing your job isnt a nice thing especially in these hard economic times. i hope it can be replaced with a healthier alternative and even provide more jobs.

    • DOMINICAN ABROARD
      May 17, 2012

So agree with all the comments about the unhealthy food,in places like England and USA, there are health warning about these companies and the content of their food, high salt and sugar, fatty acids = blood pressure = stroke, and not forgetting diabetes, obesity, drinks to rot your teeth, with all the chemicals and preservatives. KFC is not even suppose to call the chicken, Chicken because of all the rubbish they put in it to make it look and taste like chicken, cheap nasty rubbish for maximum profit.

I have no real problem with the franchise closing, what I have a problem with is the fact that there is no local alternative to the KFC once it is gone. Before we jump and bite my head off listen (read) carefully. You see, in order for KFC to operate here , the local business man has to pay the franchise rights, which are in themselves expensive, perhaps the profit margin that the local business man would have made. We could open our own local chicken joint, and ritual type place and not have to concern themselves with paying franchise dues.

    DNO editors:

Would it not be the ethical thing to do to note that a story has been changed/edited after posting? Particularly after people have begun commenting on the confusing last sentence of the original story, which DID NOT mention Rituals.

You now have readers calling each other steups because they plainly see the “Rituals” line where it did not exist previously.

So unfortunate. A sign of our unfriendly investor climate and a hostile economic environment. It would not come as a surprise if the car dealership company comes up on the block next. On top of over priced parts and goods, way-below par mechanical services department, they have been letting people go, and conducting some pretty unethical HR manoeuvres to get people off the pay roll. In Dominica, the employees are not financially able to challenge such actions, and generally, people tend to just walk away from it, since the compensation due is normally so little, and the employees do not have the will nor the energy or smarts to challenge the employers and set a new precedent. Some lawyers need to come together to offer the legal advice to employees and provide the support at an affordable rate so we can stop these practices where HR people who follow orders and pretty much disregard the labour laws and codes frequently.

You cannot bow to the GVT who allows you to pay your local workers MINIMUM MINIMUM wage, import non locals to take top positions and pay them well- while the shareholders swagger their wealth on boats, private schools, frequent travel and such and get away with it. This is the case with MOST of the big family own or locally owned companies here, Dept stores, car dealerships, supermarkets, hotels, distributors etc. The pay wage increases will never happen as long as they are financing campaigns for legislation…

Now lets see what the GVT says when they lay off people and pay no workers compensation, is the GVT going to allow that or are they going to step in and ensure that the workers get DUE compensation for it. The big shareholder does not like the employees to be involved in unions either. I guess we know why. Is it true that Whitchurh in Portsmouth is under financial stress as well?

    • Malgraysa
      May 17, 2012

Chris, unfortunately you may well be right. Minum wage in Dominica E.C.5.00/hr., St. Lucia 50% more at E.C.$.7.50/hr. but St. lucia doing better than us! Trade unions here are a joke and played off against each other by Govt. Where does one find redress? better to emigrate to Florida!

I don’t support the closing down of KFC in Portsmouth as it will affect all those who are currently employed within the franchise. What we as a people need to do is stop being so negative about the whole situation and understand that whenever business decisions like these are made by these local corporations, it’s often because room is being made to incorporate new businesses.

I recall that shortly after Rituals had shut their doors, Save A Lot had sprung from the ground employing quite a number of people in the long run and is currently in the works of expansion. Who knows, this might be the best thing to ever happen for the locals of Portsmouth who want something better to do and maybe earn extra money doing so.

All I’m saying is that we need to have an open mind to the business world and stop being so negative all the time. Negativity does not fuel prosperity.

this thing about kfc closing will make Dominicans healthier oh please….everybody has there own responsibility to manage what goes in and out of their bodies….am not saying it does not fatten the body but whats wrong with a treat once in a while at kfc…so much other foods fatten the body…and also its not just eating healthy that makes a healthier person but eating healthy and exercise…exercise is essential it keeps our body fit…my heart goes out to the employers who are about to lose there jobs…i get it that kfc may seem unhealthy but here goes 50 more unemployed persons unable to provide for the families

    • May 17, 2012

a treat always turns out to be more than we expect it. God will make a way… its time Dominicans start trusting in God. when one door is shut another will open. Before KFC was there… please tell me didnt these people survive?

      • think about it
        May 17, 2012

God will make a way he always does and lets not bring God into this…but lets face reality its not ppl survived people barely survived and is what they did to survive…everyday people are crying no jobs no money to feed their families before kfc and still after kfc, what makes the difference is the decrease in unemployment….lets put it that way before kfc 100 was crying no job no money to feed there families after kfc 50 less ppl crying now tell me if that’s not a difference n tell me if that’s not better than the 100 crying, now kfc close now the 100 back crying now tell me if that seems right….who in the kitchen feels the heat…everything has a positive and a negative outcome its time we start focusing on the positive aspect and not the negative…as i said everybody has a right as to what they take into their body let them be responsible for themselves instead of agreeing to the fact that 50 more people are being unemployed

it is no secret that the owner of Fine Foods Inc., Mr. Karl Nassief, is also director of a similar company in St. Lucia, Real Foods Inc. (Gros Islet), managed by Iris Kehler, who up till last year worked as a consultant for Fine Foods Inc. in Dominica. Are we witnessing a shift of focus by this eminent local company away from Dominica to St. Lucia? If so, one may wonder why? Mr. Nassief is an astute and dynamic business man. May 17, 2012

I think you (DNO) mean that Rituals in Portsmouth and Roseau have already closed down. (Not KFC, last sentence).

I have visited both Rituals when they were open, and found the customer service to be amongst the worst on the island. Rude staff, long waiting, dirty tables, no outside tables (Roseau). Even though the coffee and buns were excellent, me, and most of my friends could not stand the indifference and rudeness of the staff, and so always went to the cafe next door. Inferior coffee, but superior service.

We rarely go to KFC, but again, the staff do not seem to have been trained in Customer Service. This may be OK for some people, and when you do not have a choice, you have to put up with it, but Tourists, Ross Students, returning Dominicans, etc want to be served with a SMILE.

For example, there is apparently a new food franchise opening in Roseau shortly, and there is an established branch in Portsmouth. My (English) friend visited with her Dominican husband, and phoned me to say “You must visit – the staff are really nice and friendly, and BTW, the food was good too.”

Dominicans stop being fooled by what you are hearing from the Labour Party who will try to make you believe that things are good. Expect to hear more of that at their DLP Convention on Sunday when they bring Owen Arthur here to give you the impression that people like him support the government.

Not underscoring the loss of jobs thete is a valuable lesson here. To declare war on agriculture is to declare economic destruction of a people. I manage a multi million dollar operation with 21 employees. way KFC need 50 when salaries is the single largest expense? cut staff, demand more from your staff.

all they did was “pull up and cheat chat anyway”

Hurray!!! Good riddance to bad food. To my chagrin,I discovered fast food was in Da. and all this time I was running my mouth to my peeps how Da is so green and clean, not even a fast food franchise had set up shop because the lovely health-conscious people of Dominica demanded of our “people’s government” [tongue in cheek] not to allow them to enter the island and moreover, Dominicans do not eat ff, except when they travel to St. Martin. etc… :-P
I agree they provided jobs but they also contributed to a somewhat unhealthly eating habit.

In a sense that should be considered welcome news, even if the attendants will be out of a job. Although the losing of their jobs will cause some hardship, or perhaps suffering.

The good thing about that is some life’s will be saved, since such food shortens the life of those who indulges in KFC, Churches Fried Chicken, Popeye, McDonalds, and the likes; since their products wreck havoc within the arteries of the unsuspecting.

Their food kills people slowly, since they produce high bad cholesterol which is very damaging.

What happen to the days when we would go home and cook, our people were more healthy than they are these days.

I reside in United States, I cannot remember eating such rubbish five times since I got here, not even when I am driving across country and far away from civilization do I eat such. As recently as today when I went to buy my tickets at the Jamaican store on Crenshaw for the Midnight Grovers show two nights from tonight, I bought two pounds of boneless Salt-fish ( and me green fig and thing), which I am about to eat right now 7:53 P. M.

If many of us living out here have not abandoned our traditional food, I do not see why Dominican born should be eating that sort of thing at home.

By the way I have met people who studied at Ross Medical School in Dominica, finished and returned here, working, and their favorite dishes these days seems distinctly Dominican, yes ” dem nam sal fish, bakes, and boil dumplin an green fig, yellow yarm an tanya too oui!”

This is not only happening in Dominica, Barbados is becoming a country on the rise; no county wants to do anymore business in Barbados, their economy already is a nightmare, 34 hotels already closed their door in the past five years, and there biggest hotel with over five hundred workers, closed the door on Monday morning, so Dominica you are not alone. The county that is doing well is St.Lucia, SVG, Trinidad, St.kitts, and St.Maarten. SVG looking to start training over 15 hundred people soon, maybe some of us can go there…

basic ecominics people. companies close down all the time. It could be that there is no interest in renewing a lease. It could also be that their profits have been maximized and they do not want to take more risks.

it is highly unlikely that their business is ‘doing badly’, particularly with the reported low wages of 600.

So stop jumping on the bandwagon and saying ‘dominica is too small’ or ‘too slow’. Food Enterprised are among the most lucrative in the world. As somebody rightly said, Subway has remained opened for years.

Hmmm, let hope no Chinee business doh swoop in to take up the slack. they seem to wait on the side like scavenging vultures, then as soon as a Dominican business goes down they move in.

When concerned people were complained about the ingress of the Chinese, businessmen who start with generous no interest loans and other incentives, The Minister of trade responded by urging Dominicans to go into food businesses, since “man must eat”. However he neglected to appreciate that man can only eat so much, since there is a glut in food providers now as well as a drastic reduction in spending power of the populace

Every time I’ve ever gotten fried chicken from one of the many roadside shacks around the island, it’s always been just as good as KFC if not better.

Dominica doesn’t need a foreign company to come in and fry chicken for them of all things. Yeah, KFC had the brand name, but the main thing something like KFC or any other chain provides is convenience and reliability. If there is still a demand there that KFC was fulfilling, Dominicans can fill it either by expanding their existing businesses or starting new ones.

It’s good that some of the major financiers of certain political campaigns are feeling the heat resulting from the catastrophe we have called a government. Poverty on a rise, less money circulating, more begging and business (not just kfc) are continuing to close down week by week.

I remember my more idle days when I was as obsessed with politicizing everything and commenting on every article as u. Then I got a job, then two, then three.

And became way too busy to be spending my time trading insults with embittered UWPites on DNO.

The KFC branch in Picard was clearly targeting the Ross University students. They do not patronize it so it flopped. FFI did what any sensible business would do when an experiment isn’t working out. They cut their losses.

KFC Portsmouth was not conveniently located for the ordinary Portsmouth residents.

I see you basically celebrating the closing down of businesses. Saying that it’s ‘good’ cuz the owners supported the DLP.

Whether the owners didn’t support your party or not they are Dominicans and they employed Dominicans. So NO it’s not ‘good’ if their businesses are failing. SMFH at you politics-obsessed freaks.

I am a proud “politically obsessed freak” for reminding people that it was the very owners who financed certain campaigns.

KFC shutting down is good and it is bad. Why I say this? It is good because a local business should be in those arrears; we have food in Dominica that can satisfy us. It may not taste as good as KFC but at least nothing will be imported and the items can come from the local farmers and the money will be re-circulated in Dominica instead of having the money gone to the hands of KFC shareholders who are not in Dominica. The bad side of this is a lot of people will lose their jobs and whoever else benefited locally from KFC will no longer have business relations. I have stated my good and bad reason.

SMH… The story is reporting that KFC Portsmouth is “shutting” down it’s operations as of next week.

Yet at the end of the article the reporter is stating that “The company responsible for KFC – Fine Foods Inc., has ALREADY closed down its franchises in Roseau and PORTSMOUTH, reportedly also for financial reasons.”

How can they have already closed down their franchise in Portsmouth when you are reporting that they WILL be “CLOSING” as of next week.

How can you be reporting that they have already closed down their “franchises” in Roseau giving the false impression that all their franchises including KFC and PHD Roseau has been closed?

This last statement is clearly incorrect.

Unless you raise your chicken, hormones are in all the chicken sold in stores in Dominica not only KFC chicken, do your research before you give any advice , lets be honest and admit we eat not just KFC but a lot of imported food, ex: boxed macaroni and cheese () because it’s cheaper. Those vendors @ the market sell vegetables very expensive when they buy them extremely cheap from the farmers.

Can you clarify: “The company responsible for KFC – Fine Foods Inc., has already closed down its franchises in Roseau and Portsmouth, reportedly also for financial reasons.”
Which franchises have closed in Roseau?

Admin: Reader, “its other franchises” (Rituals)

The company responsible for KFC – Fine Foods Inc., has already closed down its franchises in Roseau and Portsmouth, reportedly also for financial reasons.

Read again, the company that brought KFC to Dominica has already closed its other businesses in Roseau and portsmouth.
