New call center coming; to employ over 150 Dominicans

Over 150 Dominicans are expected to gain employment when a new call center opens its doors on the island later this month.

This was revealed by Kelver Darroux, Junior Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister in a Wednesday afternoon interview with Dominica News Online.

According to the St Joseph Parliamentary Representative Canadian-owned company, Wikibuli Communications, has already invested $1.2-million into its Dominica operation which is located on the second floor of the Charles Pharmacy in Fields Lane and is setting its eye on expanding operation in less than six months.

“Government remains committed to providing the enabling environment for investors, this new call center will not only create more employment for young person’s but it will boost the information and technology sector in this country,” Darroux pointed out.

Another call center, Clear Harbour, has been operating on island for years now. Several hundred Dominicans are employed at that institution.

150 people trained in customer relationship could be of colossal importance to Dominica. As one person expressed our social skills are dismal. One only has to get on line and read through the blog interaction; the constant rudeness and disrespecting of others opinion and feelings. The substandard level of discourse.
On the ground it’s even worse; the rudeness at restaurants, business places , government offices is heart breaking. On my last visit to Dominica I witness a a lady (waitress)at a certain restaurant on the bay front yelling at a cruise ship visitor repeating “ Make haste nuh so long you seat down dere “. What was interesting was the fact that while I kept walking and wondering should I go find the manager and file a complain I walked right into a pile of domestic garbage on the sidewalk – essentially at the north entrance gate of that very same restaurant. I realize then that finding the restaurant owner or manager would be futile.
Although I may have deviated from the real issue my genuine concern is that the success of these call companies is heavily based on customer relationship and interaction and I sincerely hope that we recognize the dire need for an attitude adjustment in Dominica. I am of the opinion that in order to achieve a the required transformation the ministry of education must implement social skills with the school curriculum from elementary to secondary school.
I am excited about the impending jobs for so many of our young people. However based on my countless observances and experiences regarding social etiquette , customer relationship in Dominica I am a bit nervous that the insensitivity of our people could be a detriment to the longevity of this company’s operation in Dominica.
My appeal – those who know better please be that model and promote proper social skills – stand in line wait your turn, excuse me , sir/ madam instead of my lady or yoow , I disagree because……….as oppose to “ mista seek in his head man”. Those little things could help boost foreign investment but will help propel our tourism industry.

@ Liz…Whew this is very, very good. I’m thrilled that you are capable of a two-sentence response. I was just bracing up for a 16 paragraph story so I could scroll down quickly, but 2 sentences? Things are looking up eh:-)

        At Hint Hint

Now stop that! That was all I wanted to say wee!

And remember that my paragraphs are short, that is why they are so many. Some people write just as much as I do, they just pile up everything in one sentence, that all! Hahahahahaha!

Just hope the selection process will not be based on favoritism or who come from a wealthy family rather on who is best qualified and certified for the job….

    thank you

  5. July 7, 2011

i am glad to know that employment is comming around ,but befor people take me wrong,i want them to look beyond my statements and think real. These companies are from north america, mind you these are out source jobs,(job shipped out of the country,to save, by evading taxes, or for lower wages) now these countries are looking to reinstate out sourced jobs back to the countries, to boost their ailing economies, also to stiffle thoes countries that not in line with them.i am just warning that these workers make resevation for the unexpected, save and plan properly, incase these companies get orders from their government to pull the rug from under us.Remember this political circus that in going on these days, with the super powers; care less about we the small countries, we are just pons in their chess game, so don’t take me wrong,i am glad for my people, but be aware, take care,God BLESS Dominica and it’s people.

I agree. Spend a little – save a little – invest the rest.

    • July 7, 2011

You should simply appreciate that some form of employment is trickling into the country, and at least one hundred-fifty people, may soon realize a pay cheque which they now lack.

Instead you are running your mouth off, talking about outsourcing, and taxes, and their economy. Learn to appreciate it whiles it last, and shut your mouth!

      • July 7, 2011

FETelemaque is sometimes blunt in his speaking, but he has a point.

Our Dominicans are too quick in choosing the negative side and calling for the damnation of our country and her people as they do so.

We have to nurture hope and hope is the promise from our God, who is faithful and true to His promises.

We may have to struggle before we see success, but God does not serve us on a silver platter either.

If a seed is put into the ground and we choose to look for all the negative side, without nurturing it to germinate and be fruitful, we will discover all the negative effect in its production.

Everyone one has the right to their opinion but let us not forget that negative opinions to the excess produce nothing but ongoing contentions that eventually produces futillity that desstroys itself. For futility and destruction is what we call for through our negative mentality.

I keep reading people here, calling on God, God, God, to save our Dominica and her people.

How the hell can God save us, when we do not believe He has the authority to give us victory agains the evils that could come against us.

Why can’t we try to appreciate first, with an attitude of humility, instead of looking with foolish pride, at the bad things that is not even visible, except that we have accepted Satan’s lie in our mind, as from the very beginning?

Yeah! Satan told Eve “you will not die” And she believed him. Today human beings are existing in their death condition, inherited from Eve. But that is the problem also. They do not know they are dead either.

How can those who are dead hear the voice of those who are alive? That is not possible.

Beggars can not be choosers! Yes, these jobs are outsourced for commercial reasons but they are salary-paying jobs, not drug dealing, stealing activities and…we need them. Are they guaranteed for life? No, but lets embrace them for as long as we can and create some much needed cash flow in our economy.

I understand your point – but at the same time… you shouldn’t be asking them to come out, because you know they’ll put a negative spin on this.

Everyone who is genuinely for Dominica will speak up when right is right and wrong is wrong. No one who is concerned about the welfare of Dominica and Dominicans can honestly not be glad and grateful that at least 150 more people will be employed.

Yes, along with that comes many concerns, but right now, 150 more people will be better able to survive. A pay check is a paycheck…

So in the spirit of true Dominicans for Dominica…i say, leave the negative, destructive people in hiding… smart people will observe their biases and one-sided nature ….

Any sign of employment is this country is a good sign and though i am not a supporter of this government. when someone does good you have to give them their due the same as when they do bad.So good job guys. now the question is how much are they being paid, cause am in communications and one thing i know is that when a company moves overseas its for cheap labor. Or at list way cheaper than it would be where they are.

Only 150 what? It could be 10, that would be better than nothing. What does it take to please you people?
No one is obligated to leave their homeland and come here to invest you know… So you people must change your attitude; as if foreigners owe us their money and time. No one owes us crap. Start doing for yourselves. Choops.
