New company promises development for Roseau

A section of Roseau and the Roseau River

A new development proposal for the Roseau River which includes a hotel and vending stalls are in the pipelines for Dominica by a newly registered company.

This is the flagship project of the new company called, Dominicans for Sustainable Development International Limited (DSDI), which presented its plans to cabinet yesterday.

The company, which is made up of mainly professional Dominicans living in the Diaspora and in Dominica, wants to implement a series of projects over a period of time. The organization says profit making is a secondary objective to what it has set itself to achieve.

“We are group of passionate Dominicans who live here in Dominica and abroad, who are consistently thinking about ways in which we can contribute and give something back to the land of our birth and where our hearts are,”  Managing Director and United Kingdom-based attorney Creswell Lawrence said as he addressed a press conference this morning.

Lawrence added that all of the organization’s project will be people centered. “Our anticipated vision is that this is something which is going to benefit local people; it will be run primarily by local people,” he said. “It will benefit people not only now but for generations to come.”

The area expected to form part of the Roseau River Development Project will span from the mouth of the Roseau River to the Bath Estate Bridge.

Please people, do a proper due diligence on the individuals involved and their capabilities to carry out the type of project they envision. And make sure it fits within some sort of master plan and that adequate and secured funding is in place. This sounds more like a pipe dream than a sound development project for Dominica. As one of the commentators noted, if Dominica does not have the infrasturcture in terms of airports and roads a build it and they will come attitude is high risk of creating a white elephant with substantial drain on public resources and a legacy of a failed development.

I love the concept of Dominicans doing for Dominica. It is high time we tap into the resources that are patriotically tied to our home country. I take deep offense to Anonymous suggestion that we do “due diligence” to a collection of our own. It is such rabid skepticism that continues to plague us and stump any altruistic desire for personal contribution to our island’s development. We as a nation are plagued with skeptics and cynics. The worse are those we send over to study and come back home with huge reasons why not to develop.

Dominica requires out of the box thinking for development not a conservative, hesitant approach that results in ad hoc, knee jerk, “let me see what my neighbor is doing before I do” type projects. I say bravo to the thinkers who are considering new ways to revitalize Roseau and to add much needed energy to Dominica’s development.

We need more people with innovative ideas to populate Dominica’s development. Our conservative approach is choking.

      due diligence my arse!!!

I hate to shoot a plan down before it’s implemented but why Roseau? Designing and developing a public space along the banks of the river is a great idea. However, building a hotel is a terrible one. Because of limited space, such a hotel would be devoid of the amenities that tourist look forward too.

In developing such projects, we must think of the potential visitors, their tastes and habits. Dominica is profoundly boring!! Their are few activities available for those on vacation. There are hundreds of acres of land in Point Round lying fallow. When will we see a hotel that has a golf course, horse back riding and a water park?

Furthermore, the southern part of the island sometimes receive well over 200 inches of annual rainfall. If indoor spaces capable of accommodating at least 300 hundred people are not created, we are wasting our time. I would also hope that future projects would incorporate steel skeletons versus concrete as this limits the span of the buildings that are constructed and the number of people they can accommodate. Let’s think “Big” for a change.

Developers must understand that both tourist and locals need activities that they can engage in. Being in the “Bush” all day long loses its luster at some point in time.

Bush tourism is a niche market. It ignores the casual traveler who wants to visit new places and partake in new experiences.

The area intended for this development is the one adjoining the river between the Loblack bridge and the new Bath Rd. bridge. Few people would argue that this area could do with a face lift, to say the least. It is conveniently close to the Govt. headquarters and there is enough space even for a hotel. This must be said with the proviso that the existing residents/businesses there need to be relocated. I would be far more concerned about a new development company, run by a lawyer from London, that has no track record of running a business, let alone a development of this scope. Let’s hope that these good intentions will turn into real bricks & mortar.

Some speak of pie in the sky.I wonder if that’s putting it mildly? I heard (about a yr ago) and just about 3 months ago the minister of health repeated his dreams of escavating the Roseau River etc ,etc He went as far as hallucinations would allow and Stated he look forward to having curises(for local & visitors alike) up the roseau river.I did comment on this before now it appears the hallucinations are now a contaminant to would be local investors. I am in no way nor form close to being an engineeer I cannot even make a catapaul but I do not imagine it not even with all the money from China and engineering fits.I asked Julie Coco my one time neighbour growing up where we did and that’s exactly the current site of all the hallucination to give up the crack pipe.he did not listen now he even has followers who are on medical marijuana.Marijuana is addictive and causes psychosis ( impaired contact with reality)- animation. we see all the effect on island as Groovy bad would say.
Julie coco et Al sweet hallucinations the psychosis will follow.

We can build all we want but we need an international airport to bring in the much needed tourists. We dont expect locals to patronize the hotel….?
A major concern would be the impact of development along the banks of the river – pretty soon it will be a stream…..or non existence – a mere memory.
As one person commented – is this a pie in the sky, until we see action; we can only hope!

I have recently won a hefty sum of money on the Euro Lottery and looking at some investment-This idea looks good but wonder if my fellow Domnicans could advise if this could be a favourable investment plan or give me an idea where my monies are most needed. i am considering giving something back to my compartriots in the form of a trust which will include my fullest support where i intend to manage the project without being ripped off.

I have already donated lots of funds to another one of my charities to the homeless in South Africa with Housing,Food aid and Sanitary and this is doing just find todate. i would likewise do the same in Dominica on a grand scale but is a bit sceptical the corruption that may affect my deeds.

Please give your views on a positive scale.

I am a Dominican living in North America, and its always a blessing to recieve and do such deeds for other. However I hear your concerns. Your donations am sure can be made useful, but you must have someone you can trust, and make sure that you follow up to make sure that the money is being spent where its was intended to. I always dreamed that one day god would bless someone to open a home for young boys and girls of sexual abuse, since its such a problem in DA. A place where they can feel free to come and talk to someone without being scared,,, and or judged. But who ever you are am sure you must find something that may best suite the need for your funds if you do decide to donate to the country.

        Good luck

First of all if you wanted to help, DNO is not where you should be seeking advise. You are so rich, get youself in Dominica within a week , begin your search and do that in secrecy like rich people do. I don’t want to read of how rich you are and how skeptical you are. Then again, that’s how all those folks who travelled to London and return after so many years behave . Stop your blah blahness and start taking action.

My friend, stop being chidlish with you unethical comments. Most Rich people dont look after their needies thats how they get richer. As i said I had nothing and want to give someting for nothing in return.thats why i am seeking advise from the locals as i trust they know best rather than going to your local authorities.

Yes, i will arrive in Dominca in August to explore the area of needs and i shall give unto those who deserves it. At this very minute i am already on another project which is occuping my time hence the reasons why i have not being able to travel to Dominica.

My advise to you is-stop, pause and think before you blow your fat big trumpet. In a nutshell, i have already got my contacts in place in DCA prior to my visit.

My friend,I am also prepared to answer all my critiques and i am also prepared to take it on the chin However if you are needy all what you have to is ASK!!!!! and i will offer HELP!!!

Developing along the banks of the Roseau river in Roseau is not going to cause the river to trickle down to a stream. It is not like there are trees and grass along the banks as we speak. As long as we do not go up in the mountains and such the banks of the river in Roseau would not cause any problem to water flow. what you might have wanted to say was what would be the environmental impact of development along the banks. Now we need visitors and investors but what we need the most i believe is a strong enough population to be profitable in Dominica.

  11. concerned
    May 11, 2011

Proposals were submitted to the DLP Govt. by an organisation comprising prominent, capable, qualified Dominicans living both on island and abroad to participate in Geothermal exploration in a joint venture type initiative with Govt. The Company was interested in Sustainable Development and alternative energy. That venture would ensure that Dominica and its people have full control of their natural geothermal resources and therefore receive the full benefits from geothermal energy. Govt. rejected the Dominicans’ proposal and instead gave a foreign Co. West Indies Power to explore and exploit that important natural resource. Years upon Years after, Dominicans have been concerned about the EXTREME GO SLOW process and asking serious questions about the status of that project. It was revealed through investigations by private citizens/patriots that almost $2,000,000.00 have been spent for LEGAL FEES. It was only as a result of private investigation and dissemination of information on the matter that Dominicans became aware. Dominicans also got to know to whom that sum of money went to. People are dismayed.

Excuse me having to ask, but were you in some way attempting to submit a comment about the proposed development in Roseau as stated in the above article? Maybe I missed something!!

      • concerned
        May 11, 2011

You really missed the essence of the comment. The emphasis was on how Dominican entrepreneurs, whether living here or abroad, are treated with contempt. But frankly, have you been informed of or have you seen any National Integrated Development Plan within which such a project proposal would fit in nicely? Wasn’t some sort of development plan talked about by the Mayor to be undertaken by Govt. for the area, namely, ‘The Roseau boulevard?’ Is that the same project? What about Environmental Impact Assessment? The article, in the 1st. paragraph mentions, ‘A new development plan for the Roseau River.’ Will the hotel and stalls proposed be built on the Roseau River or on the Banks alongside the river? You see because of the scant info, no proposed cost, no time frame and other specific insights, i have to be posing several questions. Could you help me with some responses to my questions?

        • LawieBawie
          May 12, 2011

Actually no!! Contrary to your belief, I am quite in tune with what you were trying to establish within your first post, I just did not see how it related in strict terms to the new proposals at hand. In your latest comment however, you make a lot more sense. You have now begun to ask questions with which I have also been deeply concerned especially bearing in mind that my training is in Physical and Town Planning. In fact I am actually employed in the Physical Planning Department of a neighbouring island. You addressed key issues when you asked the questions of National Integrated Development Plan or (Comprehensive Development Plan) and more so the Environmental Impact Assessment. You seem genuingly concerned about impulse and ad hoc development within the Roseau area which is good. Ecosystems such as rivers, swamps and coastlines are highly dynamic and the utmost care must always be excersised to ensure that for the better part they remain unchanged. Hopefully, more and better detailed information regarding this project will be forthcoming shortly. However, be mindful that physical planning cannot and never will be divorced from political will.

  12. huh( tedash )
    May 11, 2011

Why roseau ? It seems like they going over the river . Note the importants words “hotel” and “vending stalls”. Seems like the government has already agreed on the project which implies that necessay details such as a draft designed, cost, how is it going to be financed etc should have been in the article.
Then we should know if its a five star, 3 star or two star hotel or a guest house thats going to be build. Any credible imformation would have at least stated an estimated cost of the project.

Anyhow it is very good some people out there with the necessary capital can come back home and contribute.
