Outgoing Director General of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Dr. Len Ishmael is encouraged by the leadership role that the Government of Dominica has taken in its geothermal energy pursuits.

Dr.Ishmael who attended a Geothermal Development Partners Forum in Dominica last week, endorsed the plan to develop Dominica’s geothermal resources.

She describes the decision by Dominica to move away from the dependence on fossil fuels as forward thinking and visionary.

“This provides a wonderful opportunity to say how incredibly proud I am of Dominica and the fact that this administration has played such a leadership role in ensuring that Dominica uses the resources that the island has spearhead its own development.” she said.

The OECS Director General believes that this project will bring about a new era in Dominica’s social and economic advancement.

“All of this work, all of this investment that has gone with respect to geothermal is really going to open a new era of social and economic development for Dominica that is going to be the legacy that people associate with the Government of Dominica and all the development partners that have supported it,” she noted.

Dr. Ishmael describes this as a revolutionary move, which Dominica and the rest of the region should be proud of.

“This is going to be a birth right for all Dominicans who grow up after this period of time. This is going to be huge. It hasn’t yet happened anywhere in the O.E.C.S where we have had this level of investment, this advancement of Geothermal to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels which is just so expensive,” she pointed out.

Preliminary estimates suggest that geothermal power potential in Dominica could be significant and may very well be the largest in the region.  So far the Government of Dominica has spent over $35 Million Dollars in exploratory drilling work in the Roseau Valley.

The Government of Dominica last week met with a number of regional and international partners to promote the viability of the geothermal energy Development in the Roseau Valley.

The Geothermal resource development in Dominica is a national priority and is an integral part of the country’s Growth and Social Protection Strategy (GSPS).

This is a blessing as long as the energy is not entirely directed towards Roseau but distributed across the Island.

DNO I commend you for this positive article about Dominica and its current leadership.

I take note that she also said that Dominica under the current leadership stood for integration, they understood the importance of integration, and has stood firm when it needed to push the envelope on the regional front and agenda and has demonstrated a real leadership role. This geothermal energy pursuit may become an integration booster – if it gets to the point of supplying energy to our neighbors.

    Peace

I guess if len Ishmael says anything unsavoury about all the local uproar regarding the environmental impact she would no longer have Dominica’s support and her job would be on the line. The concept of geothermal is a good one and we have a duty to explore this opportunity.

The Clinton Initiative also expressed similar sentiment and interest in partnering with Dominica. That too is good news.

You know something strange but true there is only one comment to this article statement by the outgoing Director General of the OECS Dr.Len Ismael, but this is not too surprising, because she has complimented the Government on this bold step, but if only she had commented otherwise this statement would have been full of opposition comments. All praises to you Hon.Skerit for this bold step which is the second that you have taken since becoming Prime Minister the first is the Windsor Park Stadium which has been praised by all the cricketing countries all over the world and this one the Geothermal Project this government will not be in office all the time but these infrastructural developments shall remain for those of us who are still alive and those yet to be born.

People never seem to comment on good things but always quick to play a political blame game when things go wrong. I never needed approval from the OECS to know the significance but their acknowledgement is just icing on the cake. Props to the govt of Dominica for being so forward thinking. Now crime rate please. More prosecutions please. More jobs please. Road links for agriculture please. And most of all, let us make mass food produce a possibility in dca to increase export and reduce our imports. Thank you
