Post-budget panel discussion Tuesday

Historian Lennox Honychurch and Principal Adviser in the Office of the Prime Minister – Edward Lambert – are among panelists expected to discuss Dominica’s 2012/2013 fiscal package in a post-budget exercise on Tuesday evening.

Panelists will also include ALBA Coordinator – Ambassador Philbert Aaron and Economist McCarty Marie, with the GIS initiative to be moderated by Kairi FM Heng talk show host Kamala Jno Baptiste Aaron.

The Government Information Service says it’s organizing the post-budget discussion to both take a closer look at the national budget and give the general public an opportunity to comment on the package which would have been presented earlier in the day (Tuesday) by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Roosevelt Skerrit.

According to GIS, the post-budget discussion will be carried live on both Marpin and SAT on Channel seven from 6:30 p.m Tuesday.

“Entrepreneurs, traditional institutions, district councils, civil society groups, youth organisations, academics and even students will be invited to share their thoughts on the budget for 2012-13,” a GIS release states.

“The post -budget discussion is a humble exercise to give the people a platform to share their thoughts on national development,” it quotes Senior Information Officer Mervin Paul as saying.

Members of the public wishing to participate in the live discussion are being informed that they can call telephone numbers:  440-7657 or 616-3593.

A panel made up of all government supporters, now there is the new definition of fairness.A pointless exercise.

    July 16, 2012

The Prime Minister had to have had private pre-budget consultations with persons and organizations whose opinion and ideas he values. He is not stupid to present a budget without the input of the private sector, unions, NGOs, etc bodies that support him. I doubt that he would consult some members of the opposition whom he knows does not support anything that he does. Who would if they were in his place??? Like any leader, there are some people’s input he will never seek and others he will always seek.

“Like any leader, there are some peoples input he will never seek and others he will always seek.” that is either a plain stupid commment, a clear indication of the expectation of our leadership in this country and explanation of our hopelessly backward state or…both. I mean really do you understand the implications of what you are saying?Ok. Maybe I misunderstood that comment in which case I would be willing to apologize for calling it stupid. If you meant it as a defense of failed and arrogant leadership then you should probably be just dismissed as another government apologist. In other words YOUR input should not be sought by any credible leader…

Are you guys serious? Why not a pre-budget consultation? To me that panel discussion is just a waste of time and money. Nothing re the budget is gonna change. The info you are going to give is what we are getting from the House anyway.

Just another way to sell the incompetence of a failing administration. Almost ten years and no economy to show. I hope and pray that supplementary estimates are not again presented to parliament within the following six months. The state of the economy is an indictment on the directorate and their cohort of advisers. We await the secret Budget, what is in the dark shall be revealed to light

De day before the budget? Its obvious that the sole intention of this exercise is to derail de efforts of the event planned for the Bay Front toniGht.
Officials waiting till de last minute to pretend to consult. De madness is that nothing coming out of that panel discussion will be reflected in de budget. Otherwise that discussion would have been held earlier.

Mr Marie was on DBS last Friday. If de Deacon cared he would have invited de same officials to de discussion as well. I hope Mr Marie will allow himself to speak freely and be openly honest just like on Friday. Hit dem where it hurts. Due to past precedent, I hold my breath. I have no faith.

De issues affecting de everyday citizen in this land through that panel discussion. Hindsight is 20/20. That discussion will not effect anything already written in stone on this year’s budget.

U didn’t even bother to put someone from the social services and welfare dept on de panel. Whose issues are u really going to address and will those issues be reflected in de budget? I don’t care if de Bishop was on de panel. Too late. Too late.

I agree with what Mr Marie said on Friday. That kind of discussion should have been conducted at least 8 months ago. U have short changed us. Now u want our support so u trying to divide us from our fellow citizens who will gather on de Bayfront tonight.

Divide and rule and conquer. De next level.

      2. “According to GIS, the post-budget discussion will be carried live on both Marpin and SAT on Channel seven from 6:30 p.m Tuesday.”
