Union leaders mull over congress

Letang

The Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) is sticking to its position that a Trade Union Congress (TUC) should take form in Dominica

The TUC will merge local trade unions into one entity and will represent a greater and stronger voice for trade unions, according to Kertiste Augustus Secretary General of WAWU.

Thomas Letang, the Public Service Union’s General Secretary, has suggested that some union leaders here may not be interested in amalgamation; however Augustus said he has been speaking with trade union leaders in the hope that they can realize the benefits of the congress.

Augustus has also expressed the view that there may be need for more dialogue among trade unions to get the TUC up and running here.

As a working class citizen in Dominica….daily I feel victimized….I commit so much of myself and my time to doing my employers work. ensuring that all is in order while my home and my children sully………Don’t get me wrong I love to work and i know that at times sacrifices have to be made for the sake of the company, But there must be a limit to what is expected of a simple HUMAN BEING. I sometimes think that these unions in Dominica really represent the employers rather than the employee……which is the reason why i feel victimized…..when I work an entire month, sacrifice time with my children and work late at nights……then on the 5th of the following month to go to my child school, my various creditors and worst to go and face my child and say sorry but they haven’t paid me yet. Is this how RESPONSIBLE EMPLOYERS treat their employees????? Didn’t these people, most of whom claim to hold masters degrees, learn at school that this sets off a Domino effect and makes everyone look like bad paymasters?? and you know whats worse…..I am reduced to come here and vent my frustration at this constant abuse faced by me and my fellow employees…because like most, I have too much riding on my salary…so tell me now WHAT THE HELL ARE THE UNIONS DOING????? why aren’t they where they are needed???

There is a saying : All it takes for evil to prevail, is for good men to do NOTHING!…

please god i pray to help those who are charged with the responsibility of leadership to win back their soul from what ever demon they sold it to…

In times of Challo during PJ’s reign, one union, one head. The leaders are bent on Parties too much.
Me wonder if this go work.

8-O when WAWU was strong it did not want any other voices; it only united with savarin in 1979 to overthrow PJ who had done so much for WAWU.

now that PSU is a roaring lion they want all kind of ways to stop Hon Letang – government try their best to buy him BUT he is a man of INTEGRITY.

Mr Letang after how you handled the Dowasco matter – they realise you are unstoppable and you call the shots.

TOO MANY COOKS WILL SPOIL THE BROTH : let them reach your level before you even consider them

in all the matters you have been handling none of them made any significant effort to say something clearly unequivocally in support

LET THE THING STAY AS IT IS AND YOU WILL CHOOSE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS WHEN IT SUITS YOU – THIS STRATEGY IS DESIGNED TO FORCE YOU TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO OTHERS OUTSIDE OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP —- IF THEIR MEMBERS WANT THEY CAN JUMP SHIP AND COME MEET US.

I think this would be a good thing for the employee of this country. Some the present union leader are not fit tobe in leadership positions. No wonder why one of the is not intrested in forming a trade union congress. Mr.Augustus please continue along that path and i do hope you can convince the l incompetent eaders to form the congress which will be in the best intrest of the employee .Hope you are the leader or the frontman if and when this happens.
