WAWU cooperates with Josephine Gabriel, signs first collective agreement with Marpin

Nine employees of Josephine Gabriel and Company Limited will be made redundant on December 31, but the body representing the workers, Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU), says it is satisfied with the numbers who will have to leave the job.

The two organisations have met after Josephine Gabriel announced it would have terminated the employment of some of its workers.

“I think the management had in fact satisfied us in what they have done in terms of determining the numbers and the explanations that they have given to us in relation to the questions that we asked,” WAWU’s Secretary-treasurer, Kertiste Augustus said.

He said most of the workers who will be dismissed were employed less than two years ago and Josephine Gabriel has indicated jobs may have already been secured for some of the staff by other companies here, according to WAWU.

“They have looked for and have in fact got some indicators from other  management that some of the staff will be engaged by them.”

WAWU has also been dealing with telecommunications company Marpin 2k4 Limited. After a five-month negotiation period, the union has signed the first collective agreement with management of Marpin.

An increase in salaries of Marpin employees is among the benefits of the new agreement.

“We secured wage increases retroactive to the 1st of June 2010,” Augustus said.

He noted the conditions of the agreement with Marpin 2k4 are similar to that which was settled with Marpin Telecoms and Broadcasting.

An HIV/AIDS policy, medical insurance and driver’s license are other benefits included in the new collective agreement.

Wish my Union which collects my fees every month would do something like this for me and the rest of my co-workers, all the Secretary does is talk, talk and more talk especially on issues that are irrelevant and nothing! I want more action and less talk from my Union!

No , You paying for the service… what the company does with their money is their business and that of thier shareholders. You have a choice, stay and pay the rate or move to the competition. That’s your only choice and no one is forcing you to stay with the company that does what they deem fit with their service charge. I am not defending marping, i think their rate and service suck!.. But fair is fair and the power of free market should prevail, thats why I am now with sat.

    Driver’s license ?

Why should I as a customer bear a rate increase to give a driver free driver’s license?

I cannot see that as a benefit. Just now all you will want customers to bear a rate increase to provide shoes and toothpaste allowance as well.

Can I call a Marpin driver to come and pick me up when I come out of supermarket with load? Why not… I paying for his free drivers license.
