Wikipedia goes dark for 24 hours

The screen that greets visitors to Wikipedia

Wikipedia shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time of Tuesday in protest of anti-piracy bills that critics say could amount to censorship.

Visitors to Wikipedia are being greeted by a message about the site’s decision to black out its English-language Web page for 24 hours.

“Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge,” a message in white letters on a black and gray background read. “For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.”

The protest is in response to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, a piece of proposed legislation that is working its way through the United States Congress. A Senate committee approved a similar bill in May called the Protect IP Act (PIPA) and is now pending before the full US Senate.

They started shutting down file sharing sites.. What bugs me the most about this is that most of the files on these files sharing sites are not illegal stuff.. Many ppl share pictures and documents that are too big to email on file sharing sites.. This Big Brother crap needs to end.. I’ve lost files I paid to have backed up. :(

I’m glad to see the appreciation of Wikipedia on here. I’ve written a lot to expand its coverage of Dominica-related topics, its history, geography, nature, and politics, so that the world can better know it.

Indeed wikipidia action didd get me to research further intop this notorios SOPA and PIPA laws. I am not surprised at this direction, since 911 the world has beed served a porpori of draconian regulations which will make life very unconfortable for the masses.

One thing though I think they should have done it for all the languages and translated the message as this will not only affect the united states and english speaking people but the world in general.

I personally think that this will never go through as it will come under too much pressure if enough people get the message.

Time is coming when people will come to realize that we the Muslims are not terrorists. Many Muslims are being wrongfully detained because of Islam and what it stands for. We are being framed and soon the world will come to know that Islam is the truth.

The free masons and the N.W.O will stop at nothing until they dominate the world. We await the coming of the Messiah and Imam Maghdi to rid the world of this N.W.O.

…so the Freemasons aren’t being framed? You’d be better to stick to your first two sentences there, about all Muslims being unfairly branded as terrorists, instead of jumping into tired old conspiracy theories that just make you lose credibility.

lol ever heard of amateur porn? i personally prefer that to the repetitive silicon valley barbie bimbo nonesense that they keep putting out lol.

On a more serious note I agree with your comment this could be a really serious issue if we let this slide. Most people don’t realize what’s going on because 70% of the internet only knows how to use facebook and other social crap. It’s sad really but wikipedia being a general go to source for information is doing great in making people wake the up. I completely support them even if it means my main info source will be gone for the day lol.

most free porn sites have amateur porn… thing is lots of those amateur porn are copywrited material that other sites may have… most of the free sites are not based in the u.s.a hence the reason they can infringe on copywritten material since the country where they base have poor laws against such… SOPA and PIPA would block those sites, with wikipedia and many other sites the issue is… if jack submit info to wikipedia… but the source of jack’s info is using copywritten material… then not only jack is responsible but wikipedia also… hence the whole site can be shut down…. so imagine wikipedia with billions of data and information… which they have to keep tab on every single one… then this one little info on how to cook a ‘dominican broff’ is seen to be using copywritten information.. then the whole of wikipedia can be shut down including it’s database of information…. youtube can be shut down if someone uploads copywritten information on youtube (yes it’s youtube’s responsibility to ensure none of it’s billions of users upload copywritten vids etc)… it’s obvious the sites can’t regulate such

Sigh…you just have to do the name-dropping, eh….

The mere fact that a person with Dominican roots doesn’t sound like an uneducated moron does not mean they copy and paste from Wikipedia–or anywhere else. So, no. I certainly use Wikipedia a lot, but never as a primary source, and so I would not copy and paste from it.
