I drift. On February 20, 2011, at Harlem Plaza, eleven-year-old Takenya Merrifield of Grandbay Primary School won Carnival Princess, commanding the helm of her ship sponsored by Fine Foods. Convent Prep’s Britney Blanchard, sponsored by LLIME, won first runner-up. Second runner-up was Bianca J. Toussaint of St. Joseph Primary sponsored by Earl’s Trucking and Excavating Services. Latania Charles hailed from Goodwill Primary, sponsored by Walsh Trucking Services. She won third runner-up.
Observe the sound financial anchor in truckers as it was in the case of Marcia Baptiste. The show was organized by Rotaract Club. Truckers rising!
On February 25, 2011, Carlyn Xavier took the edge in the Groovy Segment of the soca contest held at Pottersville Savannah, Goodwill. She sang “Music Fever.” Phillip Horsford rocked in second with “Dancing Shoes,” Dice third with “Grown and Sexy,” and Clint H finished fourth with “First Price.”
In the Power Segment, Daddy Chess triumphed with “Shameless” followed by Carlyn Xavier’s “Like a Fanatik.” Anwar danced in third with “Release,” and Delly sustained fourth with “Sweat.” The Fanatik spaceship carried its load of sophisticated Nature Island sounds with touches of urgency, spurts of fire, and basaltic rock.
On February 27, 2011, Nicole Rodriguez won Miss Teenage Pageant in a hotly contested show held at Carnival City, Pottersville.
The seventeen-year-old hailed from the Isaiah Thomas High School, St. Joseph. Nicole, originally from Dominican Republic, was selected and hoisted to represent her school and won in five of the nine categories: best talent, best spectacular wear, best in spectacular wear, and best evening wear.
Her financial anchors were LLIME. She spoke English and Spanish, so excited was she over her newly discovered self-waving victory! Waitukubuli Dance Theater Company, itself a mother ship of adventure talents, organized the Teen Pageant.
Millie Casimir, a fifteen-year-old beauty from the Portsmouth Secondary School darted into port as first runner-up and was awarded for best speech. She was sponsored by Bull’s Eye Pharmacy owned by Val “Young Bull” Cuffy.
Amy Auguist, fifteen, cruised in second runner-up. She hailed from North East Comprehensive School and received the award for best answer to questions. She was sponsored by Waitukubuli National Trail. Wiltshire’s Trail.
Annesa Williams of Goodwill Secondary, sponsored by New India Assurance, drew Miss Congeniality, while sixteen-year-old Stella Alcendor of Pierre Charles Secondary lifted highest votes on account of her photogenecity!
Sheldon “the Professor” Alfred walked away with the award of Junior Calypso Monarch, having skillfully casted his quasi-political commentary titled “My Exposition.” Irish Kid of St. John’s Primary caught fourth in the field, Janae of Convent High School pulled third, and Princess Chels of North East Comprehensive secured second.
Other competitors were Donella “Lady Sabbie” Sabroache, Aldea “the Inspector” Titre, and Delroy “Dr. Chucky” Jno-Charles of Dominica Community High School. Convent High School produced Savahnn Rain “Junior Star” James, Nneka “Nika” Merrifield, Stanice “Princess Aries” George, and Medisha “Medallion” Augustine. Jadiel “De Jewel” Jules and Nyjah “De Prophet” Williams represented St. Mary’s Academy. Orion Academy was represented by Siedah “the Mighty Spyeedah” Charles, while Kiefer “Golden Boy” Francis hailed from St. Mary’s Primary. Nacheal “De Nacheal” Walsh navigated in on behalf of Isaiah Thomas Secondary. Dominica Grammar School produced Jeremiah Morancie. Leo Club organized the event and music flowed from Triple Kay Global.
Consider the calypso names of these teenage competitors: the Professor, Janae, Irish Kid, Princess Chels, Lady Sabbie, the Inspector, Dr. Chucky, Junior Star, Nika, Princess Aries, Medallion, De Jewel, De Prophet, the Mighty Spyeedah, Golden Boy, and De Nacheal. Quite a calypso crew, isn’t it?
In this youth, resurrecting from their consciousness is a whole different designation of sound dawning, and I love it!
