Catholics set to celebrate Jubilee for Creation with a focus on environmental stewardship

Catholics across various parishes within the Diocese of Roseau are set to observe a special event known as the Jubilee for Creation on Saturday, October 4. A press release from the Jubilee Committee said that this observance follows closely behind last Sunday’s celebration of World Rivers Day.

The Jubilee for Creation aligns with the Feast of St. Francis, the Patron Saint of the Environment, and the Laudato Si Movement, highlighting the church’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Originating from Catholic tradition, the concept of the Jubilee  “emphasizes the sacred relationship between God, humanity and the earth.”

The year dedicated to this Jubilee emphasizes themes of rest, renewal, and joy in celebrating the natural world. According to the release, it serves as a reminder to honor God’s creation, acknowledge past neglect, and work towards restoring harmony between humans and their environment.

On this day, parishioners throughout the Diocese of Roseau will participate in various environmental initiatives. These activities include planting trees, cleaning beaches and rivers, clearing drains and waterways, and removing hazardous objects—especially vital during the current hurricane season. Additionally, participants are encouraged to spend time in nature, walking and engaging with the natural world to foster a deeper connection.

The Jubilee for Creation is especially designed to involve youth groups and children involved in catechetical programs, who will collaborate with adult church organizations and societies to undertake meaningful environmental projects. Community groups such as Village Councils, Improvement Committees, Scouts, and Girl Guides are also invited to join in.

“It is hoped that through participation in this event, our relationship with, God, each other and mother earth will be strengthened,” concluded the statement.
