CELAC to discuss new food and nutrition security plan for the region

The meeting will be held at FAO headquarters for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago, Chile, and will be attended by the region’s Ministers of Agriculture.

The Ministers of Agriculture of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, CELAC, will meet in Chile on January 16 2024 to discuss the update of the CELAC Food and Nutritional Security and Hunger Eradication Plan 2030 at the event “Agriculture Unites People – Food and nutritional security for our Americas”. This plan update responds to a request made by the CELAC Heads of State and Government in the Presidential Declaration of Buenos Aires in January 2023.

The activity will occur at FAO headquarters for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago, Chile. It will be attended by more than 25 ministers and top-level authorities from countries in the region, both in person and online.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines currently holds the Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC. In May 2023, the CELAC Ministers of Agriculture met in Guyana to make progress in updating the plan through a preliminary regional dialogue with an exchange of ideas and cooperation among the Member States. As part of the technical work, a technical session was held in Chile in November 2023 between high-level governmental and technical authorities, policymakers, experts from international organizations, and civil society to facilitate a framework of support in advancing the plan for its implementation.

The process has the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

The meeting will include an inaugural session followed by the technical sessions, which will include a talk by FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero on the challenges to food security and nutrition in the region.
