The Treaty of Chagauramas establishing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was signed on July 4, 1973, hence the observance of CARICOM Day on July 4 each year.
This year the Government of Dominica has planned a series of activities aimed at promoting public awareness about CARICOM and in particular the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
The programme of activities includes panel discussions on the radio and television and articles in newspapers and social media. Panelists for the radio and television discussions will come from the Regional Integration Task Force set up by the Government with the support of the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors.
CARICOM Day 2014 will be observed during the Thirty-Fifth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community being held in Antigua and Barbuda. One of the major items to be considered by the Heads of Government is the Five-Year Strategic Plan for the Community (2015 – 2019).
This Strategic Plan was prepared after consultations were held in all CARICOM Member States to obtain the views of a wide cross-section of nationals.
The Plan will focus on Sustainable Economic Growth and Development. The meeting will be opened with the playing of the CARICOM Song for the first time. The song will be performed by Michele Henderson of Dominica, Winner of the CARICOM Song Competition.
CARICOM Day gives Caribbean Nationals the opportunity to reflect on the achievements and aspirations of the Community and to pledge their support for the Regional Integration Movement.
Have Respect.
“The plan will focus on Sustainable Growth and Development.”
We cant sustain growth when you have people within the system undermining those who are better at working the system than they are.Everyone should be working towards the same goal.Unity is strength.
Rem ember the West Indian Federation? Same fate!
No way! Forward Ever! Backward never! The Federation focused too much on a central government. Caricom focuses on economic integration and free movement of people.
