COMMENTARY: We building structures not character

commentaryWhat is a palace, what is malice? Well the two only have one thing in common that is a good place in calypso for a good lyrical tune. A palace (fortress) by definition is an official residence of sovereign, a state house, a grandeur building with an imposing ornate style used for functions and entertainment.

Like London Bridge, palaces have a way of falling down not necessarily physically but politically. In recent times we have seen the Haitian Palace demolished by a major hurricane. Saddam had many palaces; he was picked up in a pit in Bagdad. Poor fella – you would have thought with the many palaces he would have sought sanctuary in one of them. He was later hanged, a gruesome site to witness. Three Dominican Presidents were kicked out or unceremoniously vacated their Presidential Palaces, first Degazon (who fled Dominica in the dawn of night) and second Sir Cools-Lartigue, the latter really did not have time to be sworn in, his electricity was cut and his house was burnt during Dominica’s May 29th 1979, under current President Savarin then union revolutionary leader and finally H.E Nicholas Liverpool exited the office with speed under questionable circumstances in 2012.

Ghaddafi cried for 7 years more in power just to celebrate 50 years as a dictator in his dessert tent palace. He fell and was also picked up in a pit, dragged inhumanely in the streets by citizens who had enough and then summarily shot him. In this day and age “questionable leaders” continue to build palaces when poor people live in poor housing, abstract poverty and reduced to beggars to their political leaders for their daily bread and handouts and yet some politicians still do not learn from these lessons. Build your palace papa, build…Allez Fe bagay.

Chavez constructed a palace of “loyal friends” around him. He wanted to live and rule until 80, fate got to him and he asked God for seven more years, God responded with seven months. His palace of support dropped from 10% lead in his last contested elections, and his successor only managed 0.8%, a close margin. So what was this entire hooray about? He is gone and his palace died with him. He did not build people; he built concrete structures (“we can’t eat concrete”) and bought loyalty and fanfare abusing states funds and resources. It was all about “Chavez”, “My Brother” and not of meaningful and sustainable country development. The results of the last elections proved that.

Hitler, Pinochet and Marcos ravaged their respective countries and Jean-Bédel Bokassa a military officer, was the head of state of the Central African Republic and its successor state, the Central African Empire. Bokassa ended his days as a recluse in his VILLA in Bangui and died of a heart attack in 1996, aged 75. His once opulent palace in which he was said to have slept surrounded by gold and diamonds fell into ruins, his dozens of children living there in rags. Bokassa, it is said fathered 62 children and his coronation, based on that of Napoleon, cost his country’s entire GDP.

Big Dada Idi of Uganda was a ruthless and a tyrant dictator who was exiled in Saudi Arabia but closer home in the Haitian Palace located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, these very poor people qued up to receive handouts and crumbs from their palace masters dressed and paraded in ceremonial robs and gave that ceremonial wave to their begging subjects. In Dominica Skerrit sent out envelops and got poor Dominicans to queue at the reception of the Financial Centre and waited their turn to climb the many stairs to the Red Clinic Palace, but in Haiti the poor dare not and were not allowed to enter the court yard of the Haitian palace.

To add insult to injury the wife of Papa Doc would frequent New York and other big cities and purchase luxurious garments, fur and other winter dressings and in living up to her fantasy world would turn on high the air conditioner of the palace and parade the dance hall ballroom in pretence that she is in winter New York or maybe a feeling of the first Lady at the White House. Baby Doc, Papa`s son, who became President at 19 years after  his father’s death is now back in Haiti in a restricted state palace of his own better known as “under house arrest”. Never put a young uneducated and unprepared juvenile under 40 to run a poor country. They will steal the state`s money.

These dictators lived a fantasy life of schizophrenia where age would deny them and death bequeaths them and believed that they were closer to God and He will ultimately save them. God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

All these leaders and their actions had a taste of illegality, abused their powers and disrespected not only their country`s constitution but the people In Libya it was replaced with a Green BOOK – in Dominica, “No…Law…No Constitution, Go to Hell etc….”

In 1714, Mogosoaia Palace in Bucharest, Romania was changed into an inn. Aubry de la Montraye, the French traveler who visited the palace and lived inside on October 14, 1714, put down a beautiful description of that building: He said, “… at about 7 o’clock, we passed by a pretty big and grand edifice. We asked the guide what it might be. The man answered it had been a palace called Mogosoaia, built by the late Wallachia’s ruler. We were curious to enter and see it; we found it very even, built in European manner and adorned inside with rich ceilings and good painting, but the Porte’s employees had taken the furniture after its unhappy owner had been dethroned. The palace was afterwards changed into an inn for travelers’ needs.”

Be careful what you build – you never know when and how it may crumble on you and YOU will enter into the history book with its ferocious, dictatorial, corrupt leaders. Kai poule quaze.

The author of the article called himself “Observer” but apparently, he has been looking around with wooden eye glasses. We all know that wood is opaque, meaning, he has been seeing nothing or just being biased. If our ‘STATE HOUSE” is not important and we could do without it, I wonder why the UWP leader found himself in a photograph near the White House’ in Washington DC? It has also been documented and reported that we the people of ALL walks of life marched to protectour country from a tyrant. And you can continue to blow hot au

I am not aligned to any of the local political parties and I thought that your narrative is very biased and misleading. Readers who do no research for themselves will think that palaces are and do only bad things. It is hard to believe that you found no palaces around the World which turn out good news. What is your take on Buckingham Palace and the USA’s White House then?

My friend……this person chose to do this write up based on the bigger corrupt political situation of Dominica and following events over the past 12 years of this bad administration. YOU cannot tell the writer what to write and what to research. It is HIS work. Why don’t YOU go do your own research and submit your own article and then we will read it. Its called comparative studies….ok? We are waiting.

The author of the article makes belief that he/she has a better character than the PM. If only we would meet that person we would soon find out and also shocked about the calibre of that person which may not be worthy of a compliment.

History has a habit of repeating itself and little do we learn. In our own region we have the ruins of another fanciful palace, Sans Souci . constructed by King Henri I, better known as mad Henri Christophe of Haiti, who ended his own life with a silver bullet. Yet another symbol of man’s vanity and megalomania.
Why do otherwise sane people, allow themselves to be ruled by totally self absorbed characters with personality disorders, bordering on the manical?

    • Simply the Truth

Why do they use them as examples in our present-day era and direct them at normal people? They do not let sleeping dogs lie. It may be they are still prancing the world for dead-dog news which is of no avail and no comparison to the intended person.
The writer of the article should consider him/herself. If this person has children, I hope they are being taught about love, respect and good character.

    June 10, 2014

The caption of the article caught my attention and I was just about to settle down to read that which I thought would be suggestions on how to teach our children that values such as honesty, integrity, truthfulness, patriotism, industriousness, standing on principle and such character traits are far more important than the fancy homes and and gadgets and ancillaries that so many of us can ill afford but continue to make our biggest priority sometimes at the cost of our honour and dignity.

Instead, I almost recoiled from what appears to be the most graphic expression of the desire of someone’s innermost being to identify a Dominican parallel to these despotic leaders and the circumstances of their demise. I trust that no one is wishing such a situation on any other human being.

An unchanging truth about pointing one finger is that four are pointing right back. I’m sure if we were to carry out even a rudimentary survey we would be amazed at the discovery of a number of ordinary people who apply corrupt practices in little things entrusted to their charge in churches, community organisations, in their employment etc. underscoring a recent statement by an aggrieved politician. i.e. everything that we accuse others of we have the propensity within us to do the same and I add “and more”.

So why don’t we pray for our leaders on both sides of the fence that they may stop corrupt practices if they are engaged in such and for God to assist those who are not so engaged to maintain their integrity and uprightness, since the gloom and doom prophecy and death wish (my interpretation only) may just unfold in a manner totally unanticipated or be visited upon those whom we did not expect it to.

Please stop being in denial, the opposition is not in office and they cannot be held accountable for the state of Dominica`s poverty and lack of development, it has to be directed to those in charge of the public purse and how it has been abused and that is the Skerrit lead Dominica Labour Party.

      June 11, 2014

Why do you take delight in misrepresenting things to suit your political standing. Why would you foolishly say That the Government spent $27 million dollars to build a state Palace when that was not what The Government spent to build The State House.

The $27 million dollars was the total amount on money given by The Chinese Government as a concessionary loan. That $27 million dollars was spent on, building The State House, The expansion of the State college, building an office to accommodate The Electoral commission and a conference hall with modern amenities.Your employment projection is so nonsensical and shows how you are gullible in repeating something without thinking.

      • Malgraysa
        June 12, 2014

Gary, once again you are misinformed. The money used to build the palace is part of a U.S.$. 40 million loan (E.C.$.108 million), signed for by Skerrit with the China Import-Export bank at 2%/annum, repayable over 25 years.

This is a brilliant article full of examples none though of people doing good only the supposedly bad things perceived by An Observer’s imagination. I guess we would called that well balanced on one side. The good that some people have done good, you could not find in this article.

If I were a supporter of the UWP or a candidate in the up coming elections I would certainly not want to be anywhere in Parliament much less to be in a position to form the Government. No one who supports the UWP would ever want to be the Resident of the awesome State House Building. Why would any UWP person want that? You would have to be the worst people on earth to be in any one of these places or office by An Observer observation; you may tumble down like London Bridge.

How about us the lay people? By An Observer’s writing only the DLP people will die. Only the supporters of the Labour Party are sinners. By understanding what An Observer wrote. Jesus Christ died on the Cross for only the supporters of Dominica Labour Party. So all is not lost for us God fearing people of the DLP; God is looking over the supporters of Labour.

I do not know about the supporters of the UWP but An Observer believe they will never died, because they can do no wrong. I, myself believe in the dust to dust of all human beings when the Good Lord is ready.

But An Observer things otherwise, so this is a well written article that the UWP supporters can take comfort in and believe they will live forever and no disaster can ever befall them. But please stay away from Government or you may become earthlings and you know what happens to us earthlings. We come tumbling down.

Some people are presumptuous. They assume nothing will happen to them. The writer of the article has much to learn and also about good character.
This person must be from Mars where I assume nothing happens to people and they will never die. Rather fictitious. What the writer is insinuating, nothing bad will ever happen to him/her and will live forever.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt is such a dictator, yet folks are able to openly criticize and chastize him on the radio, on blogs, in the newspapers … in every form of media (social and otherwise). Wow! Makes no sense
I wonder how many people in Iraq, Libya, etc. were able to do so. My guess is close to none. Truthfuly, a lot of you – An Observer and the like – come across like you WANT Dominica to decend into that level of chaos just so you could jump and cheer and yell, “I told you so”. But guess what – it is not going to happen. We are and continue to live in a democracy. We will choose our leaders by the ballots! I only hope that when the results are NOT in your favor, as they’ve been since 2000, you won’t respond like the dictators you talked about.

As a UWP supporter I don’t want you independent and laborites to believe that the person who wrote this, is from our party. If it is, I want to apologize. I do not support this nonsense because it is not good for Dominica and doesn’t support CHANGE. To even think of comparing our country and the PM as these ruthless dictators is not only wrong but also unbecoming of a Dominican. I love my country. I do not support the PM and his politics but that doesn’t make him a dictator. If he was, would we be organizing for election? Let us all try to run a clean political campaign and allow the people to decide. We are a God fearing people and may God bless us all, UWP, DLP, DFP, and more so our leaders.

Just because some one calls an election does not necessarily mean that election can not be fraudulent. Just read the history of Bokassa, president for life of the Central African Rep and self-proclaimed emperor, who was also a kleptocrat. Typically people like that want to clam that they rule by popular support, although in fact they run a one-party state.

  16. UWP?

I read this article and noticed that the author did some research on the dictators that ruled and crumbled. As I continue to read, I couldn’t believe the association that the author was trying to make between the PM, the dictators, Dominica and the dictators’ countries. Had the author did any research on Dominica he/she aught to have known that Dominica is a Democracy. One where the Government (PM) is voted into office. The only reason that he is there today is because the people spoke. Unlike the dictators’ countries, the people didn’t have a say. The question I asked, is this a political ploy, strategy or just pure political malice. Come on people, we in Dominica are better than that.

Dictators spread false hood, encourage fear mongering and present themselves as the best alternative to a democracy. From your writing, though there is some history, but what you are trying to preach here is a false message aimed at putting fear in people. God bless that most Dominicans don’t read these stuff.

If your perception of a palace is true, then that goes to most of the democratic countries around the world where there are such palaces as you describe, with America (White House) being a conspirator. Here in the Caribbean just to name a few we have these buildings in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands, Saba, Bermuda. Are all these countries being ruled by dictators? We need to be careful of what we say.

Governments are elected to serve the best interest of their citizenry. As their de facto boss, the people have a right to criticize the government whenever they believe that certain courses of action are not in their best interest.
That being said, we’re a small impoverished nation with numerous needs and limited resources. As a result, we’ve developed a myopic view of our own development.
I can’t argue with those who believe that the hospital should have been redone before the state house or the state college, or the rehabilitation of the West Coast Road, or the National Stadium.
However, I’m pleased that these projects were completed. We may not see their importance immediately, but they will definitely pay dividends in the long run.
We were busy inviting tourist to visit Dominica, yet we lacked proper roads for them to drive on. We were boasting of the Trafalgar Water Falls, but we lacked a decent parking lot or a welcome center.
Regionally and internationally we were unable to host meetings and functions because we lacked the proper facilities to do so. A nation cannot move forward without adequate infrastructure capable of meeting its growing needs and demands.
It’s true “We can’t eat concrete.” But concrete, steel and glass tells your visitors and your local citizens where you are in the development and infrastructural food chain. We may hate this fact, but it’s just how it.
Rehabilitation of the Princess Margaret Hospital was a component of the MOU with the Republic of China. I hope it gets done sooner rather than later. Blind political allegiances or hatred does absolutely nothing to help us chart a new course. Let’s criticize and agitate when we need to. Let’s also give credit where it’s due and steer this ship called Dominica on the right course.

      Who we building for

I totally agree with you that there should be a good hospital at the port of entry. I believe, however that termites leave very visible trails particularly if they have infested frequently used areas such as kitchen cupboards.

Don’t you think it is upside down behaviour for officers at the hospital at the port of entry where their brothers and sisters and other family members would have to run for rescue in an emergency to have allowed the termites to basically eat the structure alive? Perhaps if they had acted as responsible and conscientious employees and citizens we would now be discussing a state of the art upgrade deserving of a port of entry. Don’t you think?

This goes for you too. For one, you do not know the length of your lifespan and how you will age and die. Therefore, do not be on your high horse and criticize the PM. It is obvious you are a non-supporter of DLP. In recent months what have you heard which he should not have stated? Ask yourself that identical question, of yourself. Some people as you are hypocritical, goody two shoes.
Do you not live in a house? Was it not built for you according to your preference so that you could live comfortably in it with all its amenities?
The D/ca palace, since you criticized the PM, who is residing in it? Who was it built for? Was it not for Dominicans in general? You and the critics think it was built for him and him alone. One thing, he has more beauty, sees good visions for D/ca.
What have you contributed to Dominica to enhance it, to build it up and for its economy? There are many critics and talkers who never act and put their money where their mouth is.
Do you not drive a vehicle? Vehicles get into accidents and you know the rest. You should know, one day for one and one day for another. No one is an exception.
What is your point? So you think you will not fall by the wayside? Do not be presumptuous. God created the world and people. You did not. He has the whole world in his hand. He governs it.
I can see through your writing and why you wrote it. You are comparing Dominica and the PM to those other dictators. What an exaggeration. You are so unfair.
Are you enticing D/cans who support him to turn their backs on him? They would be foolish to do so. If they are intelligent they will read through your writing and note the reason you wrote it and what you are up to. I do. You are causing and encouraging additional division and disunity in the land.
As St. Paul said, “Strive for peace with everyone for without that holiness no one sees the Lord.” This goes for all troublemakers and wicked people.
Please inform us if you never swore at anyone, did not quarrel with them, did not curse them up and did not tell them off in the worst manner if they said something to you which displeased you and got you angry. You are playing that you are an innocent person who never used unbecoming language to anyone. When people get angry, caused by those who consistently are on their backs and unfairly so, it is to be expected that in their anger they will make certain statements Are you that narrow-minded not to be aware of it that you keep harping on it all the time.
How long ago did this occur? You are holding it against the PM? Are you more gentlemanly/ladylike than him and others? I bet not.

The pot always calls the kettle black. The pot never overlooks errors. As the fire is lit it keeps on boiling. This is what you are doing. It must be election time, using it to debase the PM. I hope you do not succeed.
When some people dislike/hate others what would they not say and do? Keep in mind, what goes around comes around and everyone gets a turn at the wheel someday, when they least expect it. You are not exempt.
Pertaining to Cools Lartique and Degazon, what occurred to them was caused through the wickedness of some heartless Dominicans and the encouragement of those who hated them. God knows this very well. What did these men do to D/can radicals that such a situation occured to them? I am certain not all D/cans disapproved of them.
Keep in mind what occurred to Ted Honychurch, a quiet man who minded his business. They went out of their way, searched for him, attacked him and murdered him. I visualize how much he suffered at their hands. Those murderers did not go unnoticed by God. Everyone will get their just recompense from him. If any are dead, they have already received it. Those to follow, it is waiting for them. God rewards the good and punishes the wicked. Think twice if you are premeditating anything with your contemporaries. No one will escape.
Who knows what lurks in the heart of man? Those who cause trouble and harm will receive their just recompense from no other but God Himself who takes note of all what we say and do. Jesus never forgets, one way or the other.
They wickedly do harm to their own fellow people, premeditated it and then ask God for forgiveness. You should know that the Lord will say, “Amen! Amen! I do not know you!” God is patient!
No man is an island and even islands fall down and disintegrate. It goes for you too. Life is short. It is temporary. Be careful how you use your time. God will demand of us what we did with the time He gave us and how did we spend it.
Keep up your charade of criticisms against the PM. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Unless you forgive from the heart neither will My Heavenly Father forgive you” and this is if the PM harmed you or others. If he did not harm you, why do you hate him and encourage others to do likewise? Because he is the PM and will be campaigning for another term? Is this any reason to hate him?
Tell the leader of the party you support to also campaign without hating the PM. May the best Party win. God is in control and is taking note.
Our Almighty Father will not say, well, it is election time, I understand and you are forgiven due to this.
You never know when your London Bridge will fall down. God knows it. This is my commentary on this matter.

Would it not been intellectually stimulatingto have written your own piece of COMMENTARY and send it to DNO to be published like every other article like the one above. But instead you seat and respond to everything that is written. You seem to have all the answers.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident. –Arthur Schopenhauer

The truth pricks like a sharp thorn… doesn’t it. History always has a way of repeating itself. Great Article….!

So “Simply the Truth” I am waiting for your piece. Anything that is written objectively is always a critic and anti-government. What is wrong with the intellectuals in this country… Lord pray for us here… even they suffering from Skerritgunyah..!

According to you and I quote…….”Keep in mind, what goes around comes around and everyone gets a turn at the wheel someday, when they least expect it. You are not exempt…..Everyone will get their just recompense from Him (God)….Those to follow, it is waiting for them. God rewards the good and punishes the wicked. ..”

      Have a blessed day..!

This is your opinion. What is truth? Anything that is being said that seems to share a negative light on your opponent seems to be the truth. To be comparing the PM with the likes of dictatorship by anyone is surely preaching a false hood. But again, it is your truth, only time will tell.

I am no foolish person. Everyone has an opinion on this matter. I am saving the rest for my book. In the meantime, I am giving you a piece of what my plans are.
Some D/cans could be wicked and vindictive. All those who oppose what I stated, too bad for them. The PM is no worst than all of you who criticize him. If they, you are not careful, in the end you will suffer immensely. This will be your punishment for also your ingratitude.
Keep in mind what occurred during the campaign for national statehood. It was not a pretty sight. The writer of the article may have been among them, those perpetrators. This is history.

What you said may be all well and good but there is one major difference between these rulers and Skerrit. Dominica is a democracy.

If people do not want Skerrit as their leader, they have the option of voting him out of office.

So rightly said, in the late 70’s and early 80’s not one of us would think that the Freedom Party would become defunct. But this is now the present reality . Dominicans have the ability to think for themselves and will take the opportunity to change whatever government democratically, no bloodshed needed. Thank God for that !!!

Very good article. It speaks loudly of the present state of affairs in this poor and impoverished country of ours called Dominica,, where some of our leaders are living”high on the hog”.They do whatever they would like to, afford whatever they would like to, and say whatever they want to. In the very same country several thousands are living in blistering poverty, many not knowing where the next meal is coming from. Thousands are reduced to beggars, by these leaders, JUST TO KEEP THE KING WEARING THE CROWN.
From what i can see though, the season of satanic, wicked and ungodly rule is quickly coming to an end, since the poor are tired of being poor and want to get the chance to put WICKED AND EVIL RULE TO AND END!!!
    HOW LONG?
