Speaker of the House of Assembly Joseph Isaac has called on the nation to unite as one despite the challenges presently being faced around the world.
His call came as Dominica joins the rest of the commonwealth countries to observe Commonwealth Day today.
Today marks the beginning of a week-long series of events and activities happening around the globe–including faith and civic gatherings, debates, school assemblies, flag-raising ceremonies, and cultural events.
Commonwealth Day 2024 is celebrated under the theme: “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth”. The theme highlights how the 56 member countries must harness their strengths by building resilience, unlocking potential, leveraging the ‘Commonwealth Advantage’, and fostering a connected, digital Commonwealth.
“As we now face the prolonged impact of the Ukraine War and the uncertainty in the Middle East which are both having an impact on the global supply chain affecting all of us, at the supermarkets, in the construction industry, several other inputs, at the gas station pumps in the Commonwealth countries. All of us feel the pressure,” he said while delivering remarks during the Commonwealth Day Service held at the St Gerard Hall Chapel today.
He continued, “We are saying that yes, we feel the pressure, but what we have to do is remain united as a people.”
Isaac believes it’s now more than ever that the country needs to build on its gains.
“Think out of the box in order to come up with new resilient sustainable strategies, whether in agriculture, tourism, the energy sector, the cultural and service industries to ensure the long-term growth at both the micro and macroeconomic levels in our country and the wider Commonwealth countries,” he urged. “As a people, it is up to us to make something happen, it is up to us to lead, it is up to us to do what we have to do for our families, for our community, and for our country.”
Isaac added, “No one can do it for us, what we can do is ask for help, but we must lead and champion the cause of building a stronger, better, resilient nation.”
Furthermore, Isaac stated that unity is always strength and therefore he called on all to join hands in helping to build the first climate-resilient nation, “a dynamic Dominica where all of us can live, work and enjoy life together.”
He went on to state that Dominica has done many things to prove its resilience.
“But in the interest of time I would like to…remind us of just a few,” he said. “Our Ministry of Housing embarked on building back better and this initiative continues [till] today while we build our physical infrastructure.”
He pointed out that Dominicans can attest to the many homes that have been built by the executive branch through their policy.
The second area he touched on is the forestry division which has successfully implemented and continues to implement ecological sustainable projects to strengthen the country’s environmental resilience.
“Let’s talk about our cooperatives, especially the credit union movement,” Isaac noted.
He said after Hurricane Maria the credit union movement introduced new financial products to cushion the blow of the impact of the category 5 Hurricane.
Meanwhile, Isaac said the government has been tackling and trying to implement and with a high level of degree thus far, “a game changer for us in Dominica, the geothermal project.”
This, Isaac believes, will ensure Dominica’s energy resilience.

Dominica needs legislation to compell all crooks and traitors who contest elections under the banner of one party to return to the polls before they, on the own, can unilaterally cross the floor and join another party.
