Commonwealth Secretary-General Scotland calls on challenger to rethink her position

Scotland, Johnson-Smith

Dominica-born Commonwealth Secretary General Baroness Patricia Scotland has said in no uncertain terms that her rival Kamina Johnson-Smith should rethink her decision to challenge the position.

Johnson-Smith; the Jamaican who has been named as a contender for Commonwealth Secretary General, has not bowed out of the race, even while CARICOM said that their support was behind Scotland.

Jamaica’s nomination of Johnson-Smith for the position has come in for criticism with Antigua and Barbuda’s prime minister, Gaston Browne publicly describing the decision as a “monumental error.”

Scotland told State Media in St Johns in a recent interview that she doesn’t understand why Johnson Smith was thrown in a race where “there is no vacancy for Commonwealth Secretary General, in accordance with tradition”

“I would be credibly pleased as you can imagine it, if Senator Kamina Johnson thought again and felt like this wasn’t the appropriate time to challenge a fellow Commonwealth Caribbean for this post,” Scotland said.

Furthermore, the Baroness explained that she is into the 6th term of her 8 year term, saying that “Africa anticipates that they would have an opportunity to put forward an African Secretary General in 2024, when I complete my second term”.

Scotland was elected to the post at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta in 2015 and her re-election is scheduled for June this year, when the Commonwealth leaders meet in Kigali, Rwanda.

The 54 heads of government had expected to decide Scotland’s future at their biennial summit in Rwanda in June last year, but the meeting was postponed because of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Scotland said she is pleased that the summit will now be held in June this year.

If Ms Scotland believes “there is no vacancy —“, why is she concerned about any contender? Plus, she is in no position to legitimately tell anyone to ‘reconsider’. May the best qualified person be appointed to the position.

Baroness Scotland has brought only controversy, accusations of scandals and regret to the post she now holds.

Her promised of transformational leadership of the Commonwealth has been nothing but a colossal disappointment.

This is an observation of mine. Anytime Gaston and Roosevelt support something or someone be skeptical. Nothing good usually comes out of it. These are like two loose cannons. One should verify or do a very thorough investigation before accepting their recommendations.

I’m sure Mrs. Johnson’-Smith, with her wealth of experience and solid education, would be an excellent replacement for the controversial ‘go and suck salt’ lady.

Let us not be too concerned about what the CARICOM leaders think. Look at the governance of their states. They are all on a ‘High’. *High indebtedness *High criminal rates *High unemployment. *High corruption. * High poverty rate. *High nepotism. * High cronyism. *High ……… You fill in the rest of the blank spaces.
