COVID-19: Herbert Volney gets slammed by Trinidad Chief of Police for ‘irresponsible’ comment

Herbert Volney

Herbert Volney, a former government minister and a former Supreme Court judge in Trinidad, with Dominican roots, has been criticized by Police Commissioner of  Trinidad and Tobago, Gary Griffith, for comments he posted on Facebook claiming that the commissioner could not “lawfully stop anyone from having a party at their home”.

Griffith responded to the post hours after co-ordinating an operation in which 16 people were arrested at a secret COVID-19 party at Alicia’s Guest House, St Ann’s, with a team of officers from the Special Operations Response Team (SORT).

Volney seemed to be responding to Griffith’s statement on Thursday (April 9) that police would stop anyone who hosts COVID parties at their homes over the long Easter weekend, noting such events pose a threat because of their potential to spread the COVID-19 virus.

On Friday, however, Griffith advised “law-abiding citizens and responsible citizens to disregard the voices of those desperate for attention, and trying their best to make themselves relevant, but now giving incorrect and inappropriate advice.”

Making direct reference to Volney, Griffith said he expected better from a former judge.

    Gary this is for you!
Whereas it may not be kind Gary to refer to a person as an idiot, or call someone an idiot; sometimes they deserve to be noted as an idiot:

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

This man who was supposed to be a supreme court judge to make a ludicrous statement as he did is an indication something is wrong with his intellect.

An idiot, in modern use, is a stupid or foolish person!

It was formerly a technical term in legal and psychiatric contexts for some kinds of profound intellectual disability where the mental age is two years or less, and the person cannot guard himself or herself against common physical dangers.

The term was gradually replaced by the term profound mental retardation!

Along with terms like moron, imbecile, and cretin, it is archa.

I Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque, is an idiot eh (crazy!)

    Hahahahahahahahahahahah!

By the way there are worst definition to that word; the above is mild.

All the fools who come here to defend IDIOT Vvolney read this quoted text from the website linked below.

“The suspects could be charged under the Public Health Ordinance – which was changed almost two weeks ago to reduce the number of persons in public spaces not deemed essential from ten to five. Those charged under the Public Health Ordinance can face a fine of $50,000 or six months imprisonment.”

Indeed this Montserrat born of a Dominica mother fail to understand he has long become irrelevant in the scene of things.

This is a man whom due to his incompetents as a judge, set a murderer free in a court in Trinidad; only to return to the streets, and kill again on the very same day he he released him!

Not only that; he caused an Antiguan, who I was married to sister spend more than a life sentence in the Royal Jail in Port-of-Spain because he blundered by implementing a law that was not ramified.

Without ramification the law could not be interpreted.

Hence; without ramification on the prisoner exchange, the government of Antigua released Trinidadian murderers back to Trinidad: when time came for the Antiguan’s including (Me brother-in-law) captain of his ship severing 25-years which is life turn to be sent home.

Because Volney screwed up, he was not released; hence, he spent more than 25 years in jail.

That’s why Trinidad lady Prime Minister fired Volney!

Don’t you mean “ratify” instead of “ramify”?

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        April 16, 2020

You might be right in a sense; however I am using the term in a legal sense of interpretation.

The definition of ramify where it pertains law and interpretation of law means to split up into branches or constituent parts.

You did not question the term ramification; whereas in law the therm means explain certain branches of a law, the term is also used in other complex matters such as upper level math, or as in the following; and that is why the English language is the most difficult to comprehend, and express!

Hence, in geometry, ramification is ‘branching out’, in the way that the square root function, for complex numbers, can be seen to have two branches differing in sign.

The term is also used from the opposite perspective; that is branches coming together as when a covering map degenerates at a point of a space; ect, ect.

The commissioner of police summarised the character of Volney ” desperate for attention, and trying his best to make himself relevant, but now giving incorrect and inappropriate advice” Having said though, I want to lend support to the advice given by blogger Mike “make yourself Relevant and Sue the government of Trinidad and Tobago on behalf of the 16 arrested, put this commissioner on the stand and school him about the Constitution and civil rights, broadcast it so the people will understand the kind of people they are surrendering their liberties to for some temporary security.”

It just amazes me how people BTL here would just dismiss the view of an ex High Court Judge …. worse still base their opinions on the views of a much less qualified individual on the interpretation of law. Worse still on the laws of another country that they are not even familiar with. Oh.. but he likes Skerrit so he MUST be wrong!! You will understand that this man , like him or not (which I ,guess he couldn’t care less about), would know more about these laws in his little toe nail than all of you put together. Sure, his views are not in accordance with scientific advice on how to stop the virus . but I’ll bet $1000.00 to a penny that in terms of the law .. he is right

During extraordinary times governments can and do have the right to amend the laws in the constitution for the good of society. According to the CoP that was done in T&T. Volney has proven once again that he is a clown. You are a ……to want to include Dominica politics into this scenario. The CoP acted according to the amended laws of his country. He showed no favour to the privilege and must be commended. Volney on the other hand should be ashamed of himself for the view he expressed. If he feels that the rights of those apprehended were violated then he should simply offer his legal services and smile all the way to the bank.

        April 16, 2020

Soooo… You can opine fully on laws (and imaginary amendments) that you probably know zip about ..but A learned high court judge with decades of experience cannot? What parallel universe do you guys inhabit?

Volney being an X-high-court judge is ignorant of the law, that is why he rendered so many bad decisions in Trinidad.
If you are a judge and you are unable to interpret the laws as written; if you  do not understand the ramifications, you are likely to render bad judgments.
Note: In America most judges have earned law degrees. In some states, you may become a judge without a law degree, but your prospects will be greatly enhanced if you obtain this credential.

You must pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) in order to be admitted to law school. Achieving a good score on the LSAT, along with excellent undergraduate grades, can help your chances of being admitted to competitive law programs. You should also attend a law school that has been approved by the American Bar Association.
Your curriculum should include courses such as civil procedure, evidence, legal philosophy, advanced legal research and jurisprudence.
It would be interesting to find out if Volney attended law…

Only as.es assume. Keep on assuming. This assumption of yours is not what transpires in this case. Volney is irresponsible to be trying to indirectly foment disregard for the emergency law put in place to protect society from a ravaging and dangerous and unrecognizable pandemic for petty political or legal gain.

That corrupt little disgraced judge says exactly the opposite in Dominica to assist Skerrit with propaganda. Here he supports every step the militia is making even when they arrest people unlawful. What a disgusting human being!

Volney has always been an idiot who is trying to be relevant. If you don’t believe that this man is an idiot, Why would he have fallen so badly and so low so quickly. He has tried to get involved in Dominican politics in an attempt to remain relevant but after being slighted by Skerro, he has reverted to further folly with his unsolicited comments.

Volney sir your career is over, you have disgraced yourself and by extension, the people of Dominica. Do us all a favour and go quietly into oblivion, If you behave yourself well, we may even sing a sankey for you. Far-e-well papa Volney enter purgatory with your last chance. Continue to talk fool and purgatory will dismiss you to hell….you have been warned, your choice!

Why would you choose to call Mr. Volney an idiot, do you know what an idiot is, wow. Your haste to reply and your ignorance not being able to understand the true meaning of what Mr.Volney was trying to imply should not be regarded as an informed opinion. Mr. Volney did not say that the commissioner cannot stop anyone from having a party at their home. he used the word “Lawfully” cannot stop, this is a valid opinion especially coming from a person who was Judge of the Supreme Court and that is what you missed or did not understand. Who are you to make such silly statement saying “Volney sir your career is over, ” where do you get the authority to make such nonsensical statement.

To Admin: you referred to Mr Volney in your report as a former High Court judge. Mr Volney was a Judge of the Supreme Court of there is a fine line in difference as to what you are asserting regarding Mr. Volney previous position.

ADMIN: Thank you for pointing that out it was an error in the original article from cnc3 that we missed.

Volley desperately craves for attention like a child that has an Attention Deficit Disorder. This nonentity is always on the wrong side of an issue. Dominica and T&T currently have the same law against the hosting of parties at this particular point in time for very good reasons. I’m wondering if Skerrit supports his ‘Big Friend’. Have Dominicans realize that the closest buddies and friends of the PM are either corrupt, lawless and talk without first connecting their tongue to their brain. If anyone want to be right, just take the opposite position, of Mr. Volney, on any issue.

My problem with this double tongue Volney is, if that very same thing happened in Dominica, especially to supporters of the UWP, he would find Evey reason to justify Skerrit and the Skerrit army. That’s why I cannot stand this man ………………..

It turns out that, while you need proof beyond a reasonable doubt to convict a person of theft and throw them in jail, you don’t need any actual evidence (much less proof) to put people into a highly invasive and burdensome lockdown with no end in sight and nothing to prevent the lockdown from being reimposed at the whim of public-health officials now they have taken it further you can’t be on the street or in your house. Mr Volney I would encourage you and/or other lawyers to take up the challenge make yourself Relevant and Sue the government of Trinidad and Tobago on behalf of the 16 arrested, put this commissioner on the stand and school him about the Constitution and civil rights, broadcast it so the people will understand the kind of people they are surrendering their liberties to for some temporary security.

Somebody needs to tell Vollaire…oh sorry Volney that Commish Gary Griffith is NOT someone to “phock” with. The Caribbean has never seen a no-nonsense police chief like that who takes every opportunity he gets to lead his men into the battle at hand. Oh how I wish Gary was our commissioner in Dca. Carbon and his puppet command staff needs to take a trip to Trinidad to see how its done. Everyone equal under the law including crooked politicians. I say bring Gary down here to lead the police force. 8)
