$1.5 million drug bust!

The Associated Press news service has reported that a high-speed chase in the eastern Caribbean ended with U.S. authorities seizing bales of cocaine worth more than $1.5 million.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday that a 40-foot vessel heading toward Dominica sped off when crew members from the Port Canaveral-based cutter Vigilant tried to board Sept. 28. The boarding team’s small boat chased the other vessel for more than two hours before stopping it in international waters.

The Coast Guard says it later recovered bales of cocaine worth more than $1.5 million that were dumped overboard by the vessel’s crew during the chase.

Ten people aboard the vessel were transferred to Venezuelan officials.

The drugs were turned over Monday to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials in Key West.

NO IT IS NOT DOM REP. —-YES IT IS DOMINICA—–

Rather than accept conflicting views I checked on Google, and yes it was heading towards Dominica.

Was its final destination Dominica, only the drug barons could answer that.

Drugs is a problem all over the world. It generates lots of money for the drug barons. The drug barons do not live in places like Dominica (I’m talking the Mr Bigs, not the wanna be’s),only the
    idiots who line their pockets.

Stop blaming the government, Because we all know someone who takes drugs and we accept it.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. In most countries accusing the government/anyone of being involved in any sort of crime would result in civil court action.

We should be debating how to get rid of Dominicas crime problem, and standing together to solve them.

Dominica has a population of roughly 70 thousand, so for such a small nation crime is to high.

Sadess thing is most crimes do not get reported (rape, burglary, wife battering) and most criminals do not get their just deserts.

I to am asking ‘why were the US Coast Guards in caribbean waters’, but at the same time I’m saying thank God they were.

If the governments of Dominica and Venezuela were implicated in drug trafficking, there would be serious consequences. Are you aware of the Manuel Noriega saga? He was used by the CIA for many years and eventually deposed to cover upo their tracks. We’ve been having Colombian and Jamaican cannabis for decades. The islands have always been used as trans-shipoment points.

Before Chavez was elected to power, the United States used Venezuela in its terrorist network to subvert left-wing governments like those of Michael Manley, of JA, Cheddi Jagan, of Guyana, Juan Bosch, of Dom. Republic and Allende of Chile. They used the Medellin drug cartel and Noriega to push drugs and launder money. They used Luis Posada Carilles and his anti-Castro terrorist group to hijack and sabotage passenger planes and to bomb Cuban hotels. The US government of Ronald Reagan used Colonel Oliver North to sell drugs to Latin American and Caribbean countries among others. So they are the ones who introduced drugs and corruption into our islands.

I can elaborate on these points but I have been subjected to drastic DNO censorship when I post my anti US and pro left wing comments. So I will stop here and see what the reaction will be.

    @Rolle:

This story had nothing to do with the Prime Minister. I do think you should not implicate him in it.
To calm your mind and nerves why do you not personally address your issue directly to the Prime Minister instead of lambasting him on this Website. It is not fair to him. Be loving and compassionate. Cease scrutinizing him and his lifestyle. Allow him to carry-out his duties efficiently. If he fails to do this he will have to answer primarily to God who has placed him in this position with the help of the majority of Dominicans who elected him. When people keep on criticizing him, how can he function properly? You are placing a hindrance in his path.
Patience! When the next election is called you will have the opportunity to change the PM if you so wish. Do you think that another PM could do better? Just wait and see.
Live and let live. Even better yet pray to God to assist him and change him, the latter if you think he should change.
Place Our Lord Jesus Christ first in your life, in your family, your household, in your country and all that you do and say.
The problem with some people is they are of the assumption that they are perfect and more perfect than others. They talk and argue too much and do not pray to God for His divine assistance in all matters. God wants our prayers. He also wants worship and repentance. God cannot help us if we neglect these important matters which will move His hands to change things.
A wise person said: “Speak more to God and less to people.”
Think God always. You should practice The Serenity Prayer:

O God, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference. Amen!

May God bless you and grant you graces accordingly!

What is disturbing is that we have to learn this from the Associated Press and not from local sources, when our authorities would have been informed about this as a matter of routine by the Americans. And if they didn’t it means that they do not trust us. Media that only present good news cease to be credible. One only has to look & listen to GIS. If we do not face the problems we have and sweep all unwelcome news under the carpet it is very unlikely we take measures to remedy the situation. Let’s be frank and tackle that drugs monster head on before it devours us.

How could it be Dominican Republic when they specified Dominica in the eastern caribbean? When we know our chidren were poor and all of a sudden they become millionaires and we know their salary is nowhere close to their worth, we would be fooling ourselves to fail to have questions reguarding such overnight riches. We need to ask our politicians where have they been getting their monies from because their salaries cannot justify thier worth. This news is very disturbing to me because I just cannot understand how people that grew up poor just got so rich when we know they never won the lotto. What are they involved in? Only God knows. As we celebrate our independence, let us be careful that our sin does not find us out.

Why is it, whenever something occurs the name of the Prime Minister is mentioned in some of those responses? Can you not stick to one topic? Address the issue and leave the PM out of it. You could be sued for libel. The issue here is a $1.5M cocaine which appeared to be destined for Dominica. Are you implicating the PM?

  39. Truth, Justice, Love, Peace and Unity
    October 28, 2010

    @Unbelievable!!:

Thanks be to God they were intercepted and caught. God blest Dominica and protected it from this $1.5 million cocaine.
They knew very well their intent and they were to deliver their lot to Dominica.
Who are the Dominican contacts who would be accepting this cocaine? Surely, there must have been an arrangement for someone or some people to accept it.
If Dominicans do not purchase the illegal drugs, how could they make money from it? Where are those Dominicans getting the money from to purchase $1.5m cocaine?
Illegal drugs lead to additional criminal activities. Illegal drugs need to be weeded out.
St. Paul said: “Place you mind on things of above and not on what is on earth.”
My fellow Dominicans especially those who are practicing Christians, please pray fervently for Dominica (continue to do so) that God may eradicate such criminal activities that serve no useful and health purpose but to keep His people in bondage and to contribute to their early demise.
May God be praised. Blessed be God! Blessed be His Holy Name…

Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant returns to Port Canaveral, Fla., following 50-day patrol
Editor’s Note: Media interested in covering the arrival of the Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant at 9235 Grouper Road in Port Canaveral are requested to contact Ens. Brittany P. Lee at (321) 853–7176 or via email at [email protected].

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The crew of the Port Canaveral based Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant will return to homeport Friday at 9 a.m. concluding a 50-day Joint Interagency Task Force-South counter narcotics patrol.

The crew of the Cutter Vigilant departed Port Canaveral Sept. 10 to conduct homeland security, law enforcement, and counter-drug operations.

While underway in the Eastern Caribbean, the crew of the vigilant worked closely with domestic and international partners to include the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, St. Lucian Marine Police, Dominican Coast Guard, and the Dutch Navy, in order to locate and stop vessels transporting narcotics to the United States.

Most notably, Vigilant crewmembers received a report of a 40-foot northbound vessel transiting toward Dominica Sept. 28. Vigilant crewmembers responded by sending a boarding team on its non-compliant small boat pursuit team to intercept. Traveling at speeds exceeding 35 miles per hour, Vigilant’s boarding team pursued the vessel for more than two hours and eventually stopped the vessel in international waters.

During the chase, Vigilant’s boarding team witnessed the vessel’s crew throw two bales of contraband into the water. The team marked the position of the contraband, which Vigilant personnel later recovered. The contraband tested positive for cocaine. Following the intercept and search of the vessel, the crew safely detained 10 suspected cocaine traffickers and transferred them to Venezuelan officials.

The seized cocaine has an estimated street value of more than $1.5 million.

The VIGILANT is a 210-foot Medium Endurance Cutter.

It breaks my heart to read what is going on in Dominica. The government needs to recruit more Police Officers on the Island. 400 officers are not enough to secure our country.Since the late 70’s up to the present time the strength of the force have not been increase. That is unacceptable !!!.In the late 80’s we , the officers seized a ship which had over 3000 lbs of cocaine. thanks to the trained dogs we had.The gov’t should invest in training more dogs.Crimes were at a minimal.Today , all we hear about are stabbing, shooting and robbery. The latter, we never had. That’s ashame. All police officer should carry weapons. its necessary ,in time of today. For the drug dealers. THE BLOOD OF THE CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS ARE ON YOUR HANDS.

@Retired Police officer: Thank you for your message. May we take heed and pray for our nation. We need to pray that the Lord will destroy this evil that plagues. We just need to take a look at our selves. Sometimes I think that we love what is going on because we accept it! We look the other way when we are getting some of it. The path that this land is taking does not look good. I pray now and declare in Jesus name that the enemy will be destroyed. That those who are involved will be destroyed. This nonsense has got to stop and it is time that we as a Christian nation start speaking out against this evil that has covered our land. We need to call eveil evil and stop pretending that everything is glossy and clean. We need to see what is going on with the wisdom and forsight that God has given us and pray that the enemy’s plans will be destroyed and that God we will be saved. This country has religous “not sure how Godly they are” defending evil and terrible works. Woe be unto them. But I declare in Jesus name that he will save this land. Even if he finds 10 righteous that the land will be saved and that the source of this evil be it the head or the tail will be sent to their knees. The Lord will triumph but we must not be stupid. We must stop calling wrong right. We must speak what we see happening and confess our wrong doing so that we will be healed.

    October 28, 2010

Man we DA people are a bunch of hypocrites. Either that, or we are the most naive people in the world. Dominica has been used for drug transshipment for many decades. Why when it gets international attention we play dumb, getting all embarrassed and defensive? Even crying “It’s not us; it must be the Dominican Republic.” Poor us!!

We have a lot of open remote shoreline…perfect for the trafficker. Our very limited resources makes it next to impossible to patrol our coastline effectively. Our coast guard can basically be at only one place and a time. Patrolling the shore from land is just as much a guessing game as on sea. If we happen to catch anyone is either prior intelligence(sell out), or pure luck.

We are not alone. Most of our Eastern Caribbean neighbors are also used in that regard. With the money to be had, the drug trade will always be attractive to individuals here in Dominica. As long as the traffickers deem the Eastern Caribbean to be a viable transfer point in their supply chain, they will keep coming.

I’m not saying we should accept it and do nothing. Yes we have to continue to fight the onslaught coming from the drug traffickers. But we in Dominica need to wake up and get off that self pity shit. Unlike what we may think, God did not make us special or different from the other countries we share this earth with. We are not, and will NEVER be immune from the perils that this world have to contend with. In fact, our small size and lack of resources make us even more vulnerable.

And many seem to infer that because most incidents involve Venezuelan nationals, there must be a connection with our countries political relations with Venezuela. All I can say is, Venezuelans have been running the drug trade in the Eastern Caribbean for decades. I worked in law enforcement in Dominica in the late 80’s and 90’s. We were capturing Venezuelan boats since then.

Dominicans must never, ever forget recently that on two occasions, Venezuelan boats and crew were chased and caught by our brave coast guard police. Do you all remember that the Venezuelan culprits were slapped on the wrists. Dominicans were surprised that their punishment, ‘if you want to call that punishment for such crimes’, was extremely lenient. The FENCE is very low in Dominica. All kinds of cows jumping the fences.

But frankly, are you all Dominicans seeing any links? Two (2) Venezuelan boats chased and captured in Dominican waters not too long ago, and very light punishments handed out. In the first case, their boat that was seized, was given back to them. Are there serious connections, drug related connections between Venezuela/Dominica/Foreign and Local Drug lords? Think anyone of you will escape the wrath that is coming?

Our country is in great danger. The innocent ones will be caught in the CROSS FIRE. No one will escape. MORE and MORE guns and crimes will increase. The culprits will go all out to protect their lucrative million $$$$$$ Trade by all costs. Our law Enforcement and Judicial system will be penetrated and heavily influenced. MONEY Will be TALKING. All you not hearing what is happening in Mexico? Dominicans, are you all not WORRIED? You all think is a joke?

Police and Law-enforcement better be on their P’s and Q’s because criminal activities related to that DRUG TRADE will ruin our beautiful country. There is a serious link TRUST ME. CORRUPTION and other ILLEGAL activities taking place in Dominica like Peas. Our country is already ENVELOPED by CORRUPTION and DRUGS. Just a matter of time before the place EXPLODE. I am seeing further than the tip of my nose. Dominica and Dominicans BEWARE. A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE MY PEOPLE.

@Anonymous: You’re wrong. The prosecution of drug traffickers is not limited by boundaries. The same is true for piracy and terrorism. The USCG could have brought these traffickers to a US territory for prosecution; the question is why didn’t they. I do not have the answer to that but i can tell you the decision not to do so is suspect.

I looked for this news item on the USCG website and in there they attribute the interdiction and subsequent seizure to having “received a report of a 40-foot northbound vessel transiting toward Dominica Sept. 28″. Also, the commander of the vessel is quoted as saying “”This truly demonstrates the efficiency and effectiveness of our Coast Guard when working as a team with our international partners,” said Cmdr. Brian Fiedler, Vigilant’s commanding officer.” This tells me that somebody or some entity clearly tipped them off – since the traffickers were in the vicinity of and apparently heading to Dominica, can we presume that Dominican law enforcement could have tipped them off? Maybe, maybe not – but it is possible. So lets not jump down the throats of our authorities unless we know all the facts.

I am 99% certain that they were referring to the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC and not DOMINICA. Think about it. The coast guard boat came from Miami, there are countless nimbers of islands between Miami and Dominica, how do they know the boat was heading to Dominica (nature isle). They would have arrived in International Waters long before even seeing Dominica.

And, why would they turn them over to spanish authorities????????

Let us exercise some commonsense here please and get the facts straight. Too fishy.

I lived in New York for over 4 years and I constantly had to distinguish between DOMINICA ,WI and DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. In fact, persons from the Dominican Republic are commonly called Dominicans.

Something strange about that story…. News came out on Wednesday, drug bust took place on Sept. 28th… Chase went on for TWO hours. Why? The US Coast Guard could have easily used their on board helicopter to disable the fleeing ship, like they always do. Why were the perpetrators turn in to Venezuelan officials? Isn’t that country considered to be a rogue country by the US? Are you guys sure it’s our Dominica and not the Dominican Republic?….. Just wondering.

@To D/ca?: Because when they were finally caught, they were in INTERNATIONAL WATERS. The US would not be able to prosecute them.

People seemed shocked, but the Venezuelans have been the major players in the drug trafficking trade in the Eastern Caribbean for over twenty years.

U mean all this drug was heading to home to Dominica? May i asked ,”why were the crew handed over to the Venezuelan authority and the drug was handed over to the U.S D.E.A”? Is it fair to conclude that these were Venezuelans heading to Dominica with this amound of drugs?
