$1,200 fine for stolen computer monitor

Andrew Joseph of Giraudel has pleaded guilty and has been fined EC$1200 to be paid immediately for the theft of a 14 inch computer monitor from Brandsmark, while Bernard Phillip of Roseau was fined $600 for handling the stolen item.

The magistrate’s court was told that a clerk from the store located in Roseau noticed that the monitor was missing from the store when she reported to work.

After reviewing the surveillance tape she and her supervisors realised that Joseph was the shoplifter.

Joseph was arrested and brought to the police station where he admitted to officers “I take the monitor; I did it for a guy from River Street.”

Police proceeded to River Street where they met with Phillip who immediately handed them the monitor.

Phillip explained to the court however that he was approached by Joseph for something to eat and some money “he said give him twenty dollars for the monitor and something to eat, so I did, I did not need the monitor. I just take it and put it there” Joseph told to Magistrate Ossie Lewis.

Phillip was told by the magistrate that he was giving him a chance since it had been quite a few years since he had had a brush with the law.

Joseph on the other hand was reminded that he was a repeat offender, and had the heavier fine slapped on him.

We make fun of incidents like this and brand these people with all kinds of bad names when we know nothing about them. The guy isn’t 100% up there…he has mental issues and while I’m not condoning his actions it’s his way of providing for his needs/wants. He once lived in Canada and was living a normal life but as we know happens. HE NEEDS HELP!!!

If this young is from Giraudel and he lived in Toronto, his action was simply influenced by his love for money–which is not a trait of our people in Giraudel, to the point where we would go and steal from others to get money.

This young man brought his dirty habit from Toronto to our village. I am familiar with his last name in Giraudel but I do not know who could be his parents in Toronto.

Everyone needs money, but we are a people who have learned to wait upon God’s promises for us and He does not disappoint us.

This young man may have been raised in Toronto–maybe he was born here, but what is he doing in Dominica and leaving a bad name for our people of Giraudel–that is question in my mind?

Food to eat? Giraudel is a very small village and we would not leave a person hungry to the point of stealing for food to eat. Between those two, One or the other is lying.

To think how low people will stoop because of their love for money. I mean $20.00! Now he must pay $1200.00, how foolish?

These people think they can get away with crime. The law here is a bit slow at times but always catches up. Although Most criminals do heinous crimes and barely get a good fine or sentencing, but the law is the law.

Young men, no matter what, “Thou shalt not steal.” Seek employment and try to do something legal to obtain money. You have a lot of years ahead of you. Do not spend it in a life of crime which ends nowhere but in the end, only in despair. This may get you bitter and turn you against society.
You are wasting your God-given precious allotted time and tarnishing your good name for life. One day you will have to give God an account of how you spent this time and what you did with it. Do something good that this record may be erased.
For your sake, I pray that God will assist you to become better people. God’s blessing and peace.

Just asking is he a Canadian Citizen/is Canada his birth place? sadly they will not accept him back in Canada, the Canadian Immigration Officials do not tolerate and will not tolerate him

You asking him to go by to Toronto, where is his parent are they in Canada? just asking

Dominica is the only country tolerating foreign criminals

      @ Concerned citizen

He was residing in Toronto? What happened to cause him to return to Dominica? Was he illegal? Did he commit a crime or crimes in Toronto and then deported? If he did, he will not be allowed back in Toronto.

    • May 12, 2012

@ concerned Citizen why when them haitians and spanish nationals commit crime in DA, people like you keep saying give them a break, some of you DA people too like to bring down your own people, Dominican whale family

if he is from Toronto, quote and quote according to you, why is he in DA, where is his parent

He is more Dominican than them Haitians, and Spanish, so he have every right to be in Dominica, mind you I am not condoning his behaviour what so every but asking him to go back to Toronto come on

If his parents are Dominican by birth and he was born in

        @ Mandodox

What is your point? You act as if everyone should be committing crimes and it would not sway you one bit. Why bring Our Lord Jesus Christ’s Name in it to try to prove your point? You make no sense.

      • @Justice for Truth
        May 12, 2012

As you previously stated Jesus is ‘Our Lord Jesus Christ’ so that gives me the right to speak about him if, when and how I please (as long as it is not in a derogatory nature). If you know him so well you would also know he says do not judge…so please do not let your inability to comprehend accuse me of making no sense.

You’re being ignorant Mandodox was making a valid point to :D….You people need to stop being hypocrites…Why not put Our Lord Jesus in it…He’s the one who SAVES and this poor guy does need saving…If he was a real thief he would have sold the monitor for much more but all he wanted was money to buy something to eat….Stupes you people are annoying….
