The preliminary inquiry into the death of Clement ‘Johnson’ James is set for January 2011.
His 21-year-old murder accused, David Sint Jean, aka ‘Smokie’, was charged late last week and remanded to custody, police spokesman Claude Weekes said.
Clement James was stabbed to death last week Monday at about 3:40 pm on the Indian River Bridge in Portsmouth. He was in his mid 50s and had no wife or children.
DNO investigations into the murder revealed that the incident could have been a hate-crime
Reports are that while crossing the Indian River Bridge the two men’s eyes met and Sint Jean took the notion of Johnson being a gay man looking at as offensive. They were on the opposite sides of the river bridge when the initial confrontation occurred.
Eyewitness reports are that Sint Jean then reportedly crossed to the other side of the bridge and struck Johnson following a brief verbal exchange. Johnson defended himself against a piece of wood successfully but was blindsided and had a knife stuck under his upper arm. He collapsed almost immediately.
After Johnson collapsed, Sint Jean reportedly stooped over him and continued stabbing him about the body.
Clement ‘Johnson’ James had recently established himself as a landscaper after having been in the employ of the Ross University for some time.

This is a very very sad story. The act itself is despicable. What i am getting pissed at is the people who sit in foreign and act as if Dominica has the worse crime rate. I live in Toronto … and trust me… I thank God that i call Dominica home. There are all types of crimes all over and Dominica is not exempted from it, and we are by far, way off the radar when it comes to criminal behavior.
It is extremely sad that these things are happening in D.ca, however, it should be expected since our people seem to be loosing their sense of self and adopting the “American” ways. In fact, it is inevitable that these types of crimes will escalate…..
I’m sure the older persons can attest to how different it is growing up then and now in Dominica. I am in my ealry 30s and i visited Dominica 4 years ago and was in total shock at the way my cousins spoke to my granny. Imgaine, swearing at my granny. I couldn’t understand it… something a few years ago would never have been done. But i came to realise that it is not only the “American’ kids who are out of hand and are lost to the world… Dominican kids are just the same.
So when i come on hear and see people who are outside of Dominica trying to make Dominica look like one of the worse, or a bad place.. it angers me… Dominicans are simply too stupid to realise that becoming “Americanise” cannot work in our beloved country. If they were adopting the positive things… then that would be all swell, however, they are flocking towards the negatives..fast live, nice gear… materialistic things and the illogicla and unreasonable standards of the American culture.
So i say to my fellow Dominicans in foreign .. do not forget that we are just immigrants, unless born there, in the people’s land.. so anytime they may throw us out…. and we’ll have to run back to Dominica. So when you sit behind ur pcs and try to make Dominica out to be worse than where you are, u should perhaps go back and visit and appreciate the simplicity of ur past life…. perhaps going back could make the difference because you can contribute positively and educate the younger generation since you’ve lived it…

I have been reading this and it is very sad for both set of families. I donot know the deceased and his family, however my prayers and thoughs go out to them. Believe you me I can understand the pain that they as a family are and is going through. God wil help them through it all with prayers from the nation.
Secondly, another pain is this, I know Junie for Clayron as we all grew up in Zicack. All his aunts on his mother’s side were childhood friends. As a writer stated “we all made children, but we donot make their minds” that is very true indeed. My heart felt the pain for Junie also. In other words there are two sets of families who are currently very sad due to one persons action.
What we have to do is try not to put one down in a negative way, but try our utmost and be sympathetic because we donot know what had cross over this young guy name “Smokie” mind. The devil is always busy. The surname St. Jean is my family name, so who knows he could be a member of the family way, way down the line.
I hope and pray a resolution to end all this sorts of violence in our Island will come to an end soon.

Editors of DNO: You guys are playing with some hot water by publishing the photo of the accused man. Remember the law dictates that someone is a suspect, until a judge or jury says otherwise. No one is guilty until so proven by a court of law and publishing the photo can prejudice the case in the minds of future jurors. His lawyers could argue that the publishing of the photos could take away his right to a fair trail. This has happened before. If for any reason whatsoever he is found not guilty you could be in for a possible lawsuit.
News organization normally publish pictures of suspects if they continue to be a threat to the society at large and under the direction of law enforcement. However, I think you guys must have worked with your legal team who knows the laws of Dominica more than I do and thought it was OK to publish the photo. I am just giving a heads up.

Chief, you’re not well informed and you probably underestimate the management of DNO. You may have noticed that since the murder DNO refused to publish the man’s name and photo right? That’s because he was only a person of interest or suspect. I have been in this field for almost 12 years to know that once a person is not formally charged with a crime, they cannot be named or identified unless it is authorised by the law enforcement officials. Now, we got confirmation from the PRO that Mr. Sint Jean has been FORMALLY CHARGED. This gives us the power and the right to disclose his identity. The PRO, previously, did not disclose the name of the person who was assisting with the investigations because it is obvious that the police did not have enough evidence at the time to charge him. Now that they have, his identity can be disclosed. So please, readers, I am tired explaining myself… please take note.

Why are they going to waste the courts time with this scum?? If they are going to go through the process then the law needs to be adjusted to send a clear message. He should be tried for not just premeditated murder with a dangerous weapon but also a hate crime. His should be sentences to hanging within a short space of time. This has to be swift and public.
