A Goodwill man has been bailed for $5,000 for the alleged battery and wounding of a 19-year-old man of that same community over the weekend.
Erickson Christopher, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was granted stationed bail.
According to the court, Christopher allegedly beat Jean Pierre Lazare and wounded him at Jepson Lane Goodwill which caused him to be hospitalized. According to the prosecutor, the victim also lost a tooth as a result of the alleged beating.
However, Chief Police Prosecutor and Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes raised concerns about the seriousness of the matter. He stated that such an offence should have required a larger bail sum.
“If a man’s tooth has been uprooted… to have him bailed for $5,000… what you have is a matter that would almost go to the high court. We are asking that the bail be opted,” Weekes proposed to the magistrate.
This was supported by his fellow prosecutor who stated, “Within hours of committing the offence the defendant is walking in the streets while the complainant is at the hospital. He lost a tooth.”
The magistrate read a medical report which stated that the complainant needed at least $11,000 to replace do a root replacement and a replacement of the lost tooth.
The matter was stood down in other for the surety to appear in court and the bail reviewed.
