Newtown resident Marcus Augustus has been ordered to pay $5,000 in compensation to Mickey Thomas, and given a three-year suspended sentence by Justice Birnie Stephenson Brookes.
Augustus, who was represented by attorney Peter Alleyne, had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The prosecutor told the court that a confrontation between defendant Augustus and complainant Thomas broke out outside the home of the defendant after Thomas had an argument with the defendant’s brother.
The victim then began pelting bottles at Augustus who used a cutlass, cutting Thomas above his knee and on his arm.
Thomas was hospitalised as a result of the injury.
A presentencing report into the matter stated that the victim was the one who instigated the confrontation and is known as a troublesome person in the community.
Attorney Alleyne in his plea of mitigation on behalf of his client informed the court that the defendant was a rehabilitated cocaine and cannabis addict who had stayed out of trouble for ten years.
He begged the court to avoid imposing a custodial sentence on his client, adding that this was the first time that the defendant was getting in trouble with the law for violence.
Justice Brookes said that she was impressed that Augustus had sought rehabilitation from his addictions, and she also noted that he was denied a proper childhood.
The defendant was cautioned against repetition of such behavior in the future and urged to stay out of trouble.
In other court news, a case of burglary against Steven Wyke, Gershon Baron and Yohan Charles has been traversed to the September assizes.
The decision was made because of lack of instruction to counsel by the defendants.
Justice Brookes warned the defendants that there will be no other traversing of the matter and the court is prepared to go ahead with the case during the next assizes.
All witnesses in the matter were warned to return to court during the next assizes.
Meanwhile the case of murder against Sherman Webb is set to commence on Wednesday.
Webb is being tried for the murder of Barbadian Corey Poleon who’s skeletal remains were found at Elmshall.
The Barbadian was a student of the Cavehill Campus and was alleged to have been gruesomely murdered by Webb as part of a satanic ritual.
Investigators reportedly found several bits of paraphernalia related to some form of satanic ritual at the suspect’s home.
Webb was a few years ago acquitted of murdering a young man from his community of Kings Hill.

i remember the day , i was at the hospital in A&E and i saw a guy came in on the stretcher alll bloody, and i kept saying i know this guy, blood blood blood, realised it was *****, so i busy calling somebody in our area Kingshill telling them that i think ***** dead, if it had a fight kings hill in the area, i was told that the accused now was responsible, hmmmm, seeing the dead on the stretcher, that is an image tht will forever remain in my head, sherman wliking in the place so neat and tidy , like he owned the place with a briefcase..
