62-year-old jailed for theft

theftIt seems that the only place known to 62-year-old Ralph Austrie of Castle Bruce is jail.

Just days after he was released from the penal institution at Stockfarm, he struck again.

According to police and court reports on March 13, 2014 he entered KFC restaurant and spotted two bags of unattended groceries on a chair.

The bags belonged to Louvista Carty, of Portsmouth, who had done some shopping worth about $300 and who had gone to the KFC to get some food.

Austrie simply picked up the bags and walked.

When Carty, who had gone to the KFC counter to collect her food, returned she realized both her bags were gone.

She reported the matter to the management at KFC who called the police and investigations led to the arrest of Austrie who pleaded guilty to the crime.

He told the police the items in the bags included steel wool, dye, two bras and a few other items.

He said he sold the items at the Portsmouth bus stop for $25.

“I was wrong to do that … I thought it was groceries in the bag. I am about to get a job and will pay,” he told the court on Monday.

But the magistrate, Arley Gill, would have none of it.

“You were on the prowl and Ms. Carty happens to have been your victim,” he told Austrie. “You are 62 years and see your record. I will send you away for some time to cool off your head and get some reasoning.”

Austrie was sentenced to 9 months in jail.

I don’t care what his age is, he did the crime, he should do the time. I wonder if Reginald Austrie knew he was a paro and did not help? I also wonder at 62 years if someone was in the USA, and come to Dominica and have nothing to show, something is not adding up. The Government should find out what his life was in the USA.

Because if he is a hardened criminal, prison don’t change them. He will teach the criminals in Dominica more tricks. He is 62, he would prefer to be in jail than our there, because he has nothing and in jail life is a dream till he dies. No work, no bills, must have a roof on his head. What a shame. There are a lot of Dominica criminals in USA, and when they deport them, look out Dominica.

He is not a really Volere . I am a career Volere – I live in Roseau , DA . 3 years ago , I went all over Dominica looking for a job – and no one Hired me ; therefore, I decided to STEAL for a living . I have rent to pay , I have to eat, I have to take care of my Woman – and child and oh , Buy Condoms – one child is all I can afford . Being a Volere ,has been good me . When I steal an item , I can always sell it on the black Market or underground market . I make on Average $3000 a month . I can find a job that pays $1500 a month ; however, I don’t want it because its hard hard work – as a laborer at a construction site . Being a Volere is easy work – and the pay is Double . The money I make as a career Thief , I even take my woman and child , on Vacation once a year . Please note , being a career Thief – is not for everyone , as for me I am fine with it .

He grew up in a Christian home. Father was a CUM pastor. He left for the US in the late 70’s to early 80’s. There was news that he was dead for years no one heard from him. Spent most of his time there in prison was deported about 2 yrs. Spent a day in CB and took up residence in Roseau. CB people don’t remember him and no close family there.

This was all calculated to get him back in prison.

Life in prison is more structured and predictable. Isn’t that what most of us want. Some people can do it in the free world, others are not as well equiped.

Wait a minute. The “man” said he sold it for $25.00. Do we really believe him? We are so quick to come to conclusion. There are so many comments about the person who bought the items from him and what their punishment should be. The man is a thief and therefore a liar. No one bought anything from this guy. “Power Boy” garcon change your ways….

Jail the people that bought the stuff they are dishonest also, the law must start holding them accountable because they are upholding the thief. SHAME ON THOSE PEOPLE!

  11. March 18, 2014

Ralph spent over 30years in jail in the USA his family thought he was dead and one day he showed up soon after he went back then they post him back to DA so going to jail is all he knows he will be there in and out till he die.

DNO I meant to state I like the picture. It makes me laugh. This is an original, a new one, rather unique, saying: “Shish! Not a word! Do not tell anyone! ”

62 years old and a habitual criminal. What a life! He was not given enough of a sentence. A few years would suffice to hopefully clear and clean his head and habit of stealing.
Who will pray for him and/or ask him to pray? He needs to be told in no uncertain way, quoting from the Bible that he is getting old and if he does not change, repent, worship God, pray to him, make penance as a means of reparation, he will not obtain eternal salvation.
Please inform him. If he does not want to listen, inform him he will have to bear the consequences of his criminal actions before God. He must be told so that hopefully, his soul will be saved.
He has to help God save his soul. God will not do it if he does not want it. He has to come willingly to God and not by coercion. This man is in dire need of God’s blessing, graces and forgiveness.
His family, please give Masses for him. Pray fervently for him. If you are Catholics, make Novena’s, pray the Holy Rosary. We do know that God hears those prayers and in his time He will do with them as He wills. Those prayers are not wasted.
Catholics take note: The Mother of God, the Ever Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Dear Lady said in one of her messages to a visionary, “God wants our prayers from/with the heart.” This is, so that He can help us and anyone whom we pray for. May this man be helped.
Lord Jesus, please help him and others who are especially incarcerated in prison. You know this man is getting older and need your divine assistance in life and your saving grace to lead him to your Heavenly Kingdom as the others, through Your Most Precious Blood. Amen!

What this man did was absolutely wrong, but before throwing this man in jail, don’t you think he needs some psychological intervention. Dominca might not have all the resources, but while in jail, please evaluate his underlying probllem, what help and resources are available in his community post discharge, so he can be a productive citizen.

This man has absolutely no members of family now. He had spent more than 30 yrs. in prison in the USA while people believed that he was dead. He do not have a home, so he would be better off in the Stockfarm prison.

Ralph left Castle Bruce years ago and went to the US of A. He returned for a few years now and has never set foot in CB.

The man lives in Roseau. How can he be from Castle Bruce?

    Just asking.

This makes me think. If he is landed in the US or is a US citizen, returned to D/ca voluntarily, does not have a criminal record in the US or was not deported, they should send him back with no mention of his criminal record in D/ca.. Surely he should have relatives in the USA.

      March 18, 2014

Where do you conclude he is from if not Castle Bruce? US of A? Roseau? Jump high, jump low, he is from CB. It it was a good record that followed him, then you would have gladly accepted that he was from CB. So, I suggest that you take the good, the bad and the ugly as it comes.

“He said he sold the items at the Portsmouth bus stop for $25”–News article.

Anyway the person who gave him the $25.00 for those items, in the bag, is just as guilty as he is–that person should have suspected the foul play of that transaction.

may God have mercy. This man definitely needs deliverance. He seems to be beyond human intervention. some persons need to go to the prison and pray a prayer of deliverance over him.

If he is healthy, he should be given hard labor. He may finally learn from this. He should also be sent to a psychiatrist. He has a chronic theft problem.

He will be delivered if he accepts that he needs deliverance, otherwise, he will remain in bondage.

  23. March 17, 2014

9 months not enough the judge should have sent him 300 month 1 day for every dollar.

    • Simply the Truth
      March 17, 2014

I agree. A few years of hard labor would probably make him change his thievery habit.
