$700 fine for $5 items

Bernard Phillip of Old Street, Roseau has been fined $700 to be paid by September 30, 2012 or in default will spend three months in prison for handling stolen goods.

Phillip pleaded guilty to receiving one gasket seal, four spark plugs and one injector from Ian “Cameo” Scotland and paying him $5.00 for the items. Scotland, who had appeared in the court moments prior to Phillip, pleaded guilty to stealing the items from his mother.

Phillip explained to the court that he saw Scotland with the items and he realised that it must have been a family member’s property since according to him Scotland has a habit of stealing.

He said he took the items from Scotland and put them in his garage so that he would be able to give it back to Scotland’s family when they asked for it. In addition he gave Scotland $5.00 for the items because he asked for it.

Although he had one matter of a similar nature in the past, Magistrate George also gave him a chance since he did not waste the court’s time and cooperated fully with the police.

She told him that he should work hard and stay out of trouble.

That is a dear price to pay for $5.00 items. I hope that he has learned a lesson. Crime, receiving stolen goods and keeping them really do not pay. It is not finder’s keepers or a matter of holding it until… Once found on the resident premises, you will be arrested, charged and could also be imprisoned.
Man, change your ways and live a law-abiding life. You will be happier for it. When I was a child, my mother told me, “Never envy anyone if they appear to have more than you. You do not know what they did to get it.” Those are wise sayings that I will never forget.
God always provides. He will send help somehow that you will never go hungry.
Two necessities of life are a roof over our head and enough to eat. We only need so much to live on especially if we do not have bills to pay.
Turn your life away from crime and bad company and to God. See what He can do for you in time. God is more patient with us than we are with him. Be patient. In time, everything will work out for your good. May God assist you.

DNO, I was thinking, is there a point to you reporting these silly court cases involving these minor infractions? Leave that to Inside Possie where Possie people want to get the gossip on their neighbors.

who will you people save with your judgement????? huh???????? with no High school education the man has taken care of his disabled daugther for YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSS up till her untimely passing…..many of you “privilaged” people may have turned your backs for the task this man endured? NONE OF US ARE PERFECT, SO WHAT?????????????? he who has no sin come throw the first stone….. our perception is selective at best when it comes to our neighbour. the man has done wrong. like so many of us, but he has progressed his life from roadside mechanic, to ********* to now have his little bar and snackette
