Abused woman writes to Commissioner of Police

sex abuseA young woman who claimed she was publicly abused by her ex boyfriend in Roseau recently has made good her threat to take the matter further.

She had told Dominica News Online that she intended to seek advice and would be writing to the Commissioner of Police, Daniel Carbon.

Carbon has confirmed to Dominica News Online that he has received ‘documents’ from an attorney representing the young woman.

“I am in possession of documents from the young lady’s lawyer,” he stated, without elaborating on the nature of the documents nor the possible actions that might be taken.

DNO understands the young woman is represented by attorney at law, Lennox Lawrence.

The woman, who is pregnant, said she was physically abused by her ex boyfriend at the business place where she worked last Friday.

The ex boyfriend is a police officer.

The meaning of and a slight difference between abuse and assault.
    Meaning of abuse – Maltreatment
Illegal improper use or harmful use of a person or animal.
Improper practice – improper or harmful practice; human rights abuses; insulting or offensive language; allegations of abuse of government powers; drug use – harmful use of drugs or alcohol.
Maltreat somebody – to treat a person or animal cruelly, whether physically, psychologically or sexually, especially on a regular or habitual basis.
Misuse something in an improper illegal manner; insult somebody. Speak insulting or offensively to somebody.
Meaning of assault – Physical or verbal attack – attack somebody – a violent physical or verbal attack; to attack somebody physically or verbally in a violent way; threat of bodily harm – an unlawful threat or attempt to do violence or harm to somebody else, rape – the crime of raping somebody; attempt to destroy something.
A campaign or series of actions that aims to challenge or destroy something. The proposals are under assault by various special interest groups. Make military attack – to attack a place with a military force.
We should be aware that family members, friends, associates, co-workers, strangers – those people we meet as we go about our business, commuting to and from work and while shopping are quite capable of this. As observed, much of it is also done in comments on this Website.
Note what type of people exists in the world and what type of society we have. It is more godless than godly; more unloving than loving. Some people who think they are perfect than others and know it all; those who think they are better, higher than others, placing themselves on a pedestal and adopting a greater than thou attitude. It is also done in writings, attacking others. No exception some so-called religious – church-going ones. As they call themselves Christians, they also assault (a form of attack) the faith and devotions of others.
I observe and take note of those types of people. What we say and write tell a lot about us.
It is love and love for one another as we love ourselves, to respect the rights, faith/devotions of others. Because people practice something which do good to others mortally (morally) and spiritually does not mean that they are wrong. It is foolish for anyone to denounce it.
Most of all, note how The Ten Commandments of God are violated and how it offends God. Some never give this a thought. Some people state and like to assume that they are good people. As it is said, good people do not go to Heaven. Holy people do.
St. Paul said: “Examine yourself to see whether you are living in faith.
According to the words of a song: “Love makes the world go ‘round.” St, Paul also wrote above Love. He said, I will still show you a better way… – The Way of Love.” It is in the Holy Bible of the New Testament.

A few years ago a few of the Columban Sisters visited the parish Church to raise funds for the poor in that country which will also financially assist them in other ways. From time to time, various Catholic organizations visit from all over the world. Parishioners are asked to give generously – whatever they can afford. The collection for that Sunday is taken up for that purpose.
Parishioners were informed of their godly works in Jesus Name. Each one was given what I call a paper Bookmark of the following and prayer. As always, I treasure and keep such religious and inspiring paraphernalia and love to pass them on and/or inform others about them specifically when the circumstances present themselves.

“Until every person lives in dignity, none of us can live in peace.” – Columban Sisters of N.Y.

    Prayer:

Lord, our God, fill us with your Spirit so that we may hear your Good News.
Touch our hearts with your love so that we in turn may love one another.
Send us as witnesses of Gospel joy into a world of fragile peace and broken promises.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen!

It is respect and courtesy all the way to others in whatever we do. We must also protect their well-being and life including the unborn babies – from conception to natural death.
As Christians of all, we have a lot of work to do for the Lord in our words and actions.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Luke 12:48 – Vigilant and Faithful Servants – “Much is required of the person entrusted with much and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”
Therefore, let us regard each other with love and never harm them physically and emotionally in word and deed.
To live in harmony and peace with others requires godly discipline. Those who lack it should pray to God for it and He will be too pleased to grant it to those who ask.
Our Lord said: “Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and the door will be opened.”
Prior to his Passion, Crucifixion and Death, He also told his disciples: “Amen! Amen! You have not asked Me for anything.”
Folks, this is a message for us. We may ask but we do not ask well for a godly purpose. Some do not ask at all. They depend on their own understanding. St. Paul warned us of the latter. This is why some take the Law into their hands and find themselves in further trouble with the Law and then blame others for their failings when they caused them.
This also pertains to not stealing their property. God expects this from us. For, what people sow, so shall they reap and two-fold. Our Lord Jesus Christ told this to us. We do know He is faithful and true to his promises. Those who emphatically say that they go by the bible should know this, abide by it and practice it. Thanks be to God!

The problem with you Justice, you have too much spare time on your hands. It is so easy to quote the bible. Anyone could do that besides, you are trying to sound intelligent reading from books and then dishing them out as if you are an expert. Frankly, you do not impress anyone, you are wasting time, you are a laughing stock, and l think the time to assess you is long overdue. Why not give us your real name? Justice and truth contradict your illogical comments.

Let me firstly condemn this horrendous story of abuse. It is hoped that this woman receives the justice she deserved after hearing and examining the facts of the issue.

I would like to remind the general public to focus on GENDER abuse rather than the one sided notion of the man abusing woman perspective.

Abuse on different levels including physical abuse happens in all sectors of society as long as human beings exists. It is a moral wrong as it robs the victim their honor, dignity and self worth. We need to identify the root of these issues so that we as a nation can curb these problems.

This is an appropriate step in the right direction. You were abused, assaulted, insulted and humiliated. Furthermore, you are a woman, a mother to be who is carrying a baby. Surely, this so-called policeman should have used his common sense and never did what he did. It is too late for him, too late for regrets and any amount of apologies will not eradicate the harm that was done to her. There are no excuses for what he did. He could have killed her.
We must think what could have happened to her while he was beating on her. Be aware that what he did and during the time he was committing this crime, she could have gone into labor and even lost the baby. If not she could have died even right on the spot. The shock of what she experienced could have brought anyone of them on. Under the circumstances she appeared to be a strong woman to withstand this type of beating. To everyone, guard your temper and never lift your hand on a woman or anyone, man or woman for that matter. Live happily, peacefully and in harmony with everyone. Be a good neighbor wherever you may be. If you are not able to do that on your own as we are weaklings and weak of spirit and sometimes ill-tempered, too often possessing a quick temper, aggressive and bossy attitude, turn to God which some of you do not recognize and some ignore. He gives the courage and strength to avoid such circumstances. He will mellow you and shield you from such problems – any problem for that matter. He will help you to cope with what, as a human being you are not able to cope with.
If you are a practicing Christian, you should know what to do when faced with this type of problem. Just stay away and run away from trouble. Should you encounter trouble that you are not able to avoid, call on Our Lord Jesus Christ to help you.
For Catholics, you also know the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humble pray and do Thou O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, by the power of God thrust into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen!
This is a great, efficacious prayer that Our Lord Himself gave to us for our Church, through Pope, St. Leo XIII in the ancient days. More about that another time.
Well, God wants you and all others to know about it. This was spontaneous; unplanned. It was not written without reason. :)
Know also at least her attorney read all the comments which were posted on DNO. I surmise that this is also very helpful to compile a case and to prove it.
I have no doubt that for what happened to her, she will win her case.
Let us leave the judging of the officer, judging we are too prone to do, for the Commissioner of Police and Court, should this case go to Court. Who knows, a compromise and monetary compensation could be reached. It is all left to her attorney and the Commissioner of Police. I hope he does not contact the woman and vice versa. She really should have nothing to do with him especially if she does not have a child for him. Do not put yourself in such further situations. People do not change overnight, just as a leopard does not change its color overnight. He does need an anger management course including how to treat women respectfully. He must curb his temper. May the Commissioner suggest it and see to it that he receives this treatment which is a medical one.
As for him being dismissed, right now, in my heart, the mercy of God reigns. He should not be fired but he should take those relevant courses as mentioned above. Everyone deserves a second chance. I am certain that he will learn a good lesson from that and how well to treat women.
Do not deprive him of his livelihood especially in these hard economical days. We must not be hard of heart.
Do you hear me Commissioner and everyone who reads this? For the love of God who forgives, pay heed!
Sorry, I did not mean to write so much. As I always say, whenever I put my fingers to the keyboard, only God knows what will flow from my mind and my fingers on the keyboard prior to sending. Those thoughts and words just flow. Time to write my book on various matters.

Most of the times, people believe that when you report a police officer it is because you are attacking his job.

Sometimes, it may, or most times it may not. most of these offices are young and immature and in some cases extremely wicked and malicious.

Police officers are not above the law, we make them think they are, they let their ego rise above them but we must remember that they are human at the end of the day.

many of us have been hurt, or victimized or abused by the people dressed in uniforms or blue, many of us are very angry at them and want to take matters in our own hands and see injustice and feel that justice has prevailed.

Personally, there are more good cops in the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Service, but there are those that ………….. punishment is a nice word for some of these people.

But at the end of the day, you cant make a good cop suffer because of some minor infringement especially in a gwo pwel related situation. Although he should be trained and react differently, you cant really tell someone how to react when they are emotionally disturbed or provoked.

Beside that i think it is about time for another inquiry into the conduct and affairs of CDPF

    • Concern One
      June 19, 2013

Enquiry for what? A police officer may have gone rogue, he should and will be dealt with. Due process must be followed and he must be given a hearing. An investigation must be done to gather the facts.

I have seen teachers go rogue, doctors, nurses, lawyers, politicians to name a few all gone rogue. Police is no different and they are humans and some will break the law. When they do they must be given a hearing as we expect for ourselves.

    • June 19, 2013

Good for you to follow through on this. One knows that it is not easy.

If the assault took place and there are witnesses, the police has no choice but to file charges against the police officer. HE should then be suspending pending the outcome of the case.

Jimi Hendrix, I read that the assault took place at the young woman’s workplace, hopefully there were witnesses. The police has no choice but to adhere the young woman’s complaint, and the young woman should file charges against her abuser. He should be suspended, WITHOUT PAY, pending an investigation.

Suspension WITH PAY, in my opinion, is considered a VACATION after ABUSE.
