Two men charged with attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, robbery and possession of firearm were denied bail this morning.
Alpha Alexander of Goodwill and Lian Connie of Morne Rachette appeared before Magistrate Candia George at the Roseau Magistrate Court Tuesday morning when the four charges were read to them.
According to the facts of the case, the charges stem from an episode which occurred in Roseau on May 20 between the complainant Margarvin Peters and the suspects.
“In the interest of the accused safety and the safety of the public by extension they should be held without bail,” the police prosecutor said in objecting to the bail of the gentlemen.
Lawyer Zena Dyer represented the defendants at court. “The whole issue of the seriousness of the offense falls when there is no evidence,” Dyer told the court as she made a failed application for the bail of the gentlemen.
The trial is carded for September 16.
Magistrate George also requested that police make a disclosure of its evidence to the lawyer’s office before July 31.

Sadly, we are not addressing the root of the issue. Locking up Alpha is not solving the problem. How many times has he been locked up, when he comes out he does the same thing. It shows that the system is not working.
Prison is a very dangerous and dreadful place to be. The longer one stays behind bars, he becomes like an animal, a beast, his heart becomes as hard as stone.
Alpha and his colleagues need deep rehabilitation and therapy. They need strong intervention programmes, unfortunately, we do not have this system set up.
