Arrest made in post office mail tampering investigation

The General Post Office in Roseau
The General Post Office in Roseau

A staff member of the General Post Office (GPO) is now in police custody assisting in an investigation to do with letters which were found open in that department almost a month ago.

According to reports reaching DNO the male staff member has been working at the GPO now for “about six years” and he was picked up by members of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 7, 2013.

“All I can say to you is that he used to work in the box section” our source revealed.

According to reports the suspect has been under police surveillance along with two other staff members but the two others were cleared and released while the main suspect was kept in police custody.

“No one had any idea he was doing such a thing …….he always wants people to borrow him money and everyone expected him to be an honest staffer, it’s a complete shock,” the source stated.

Mail belonging to Save the Children Fund and which also had cheques were found open in a corner at the GPO in Roseau and the police were called.

The police say the matter is still under investigation.

Oh boy, everytime I look at that I shake my head and laugh. It is a clock affixed to the post office by the Britsh when they build if for us. I has stopped for ages, nobody has bothered to fix it and now gives the perfect Dominican concept of time, one for the south, one for the west and one for the north (…there is no east face). In other words, no time at all. It conveys our island philisophy about time very well. Time can be any time you want it to be. In this case you have a choice of three, all frozen in time!

Hello. The staff member is in custody and he is assisting the Police with their investigation. First if he is stealing from the mail then he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Now if the Police arrest you why would you speak to the Police. Based on my twenty four years in lawenforcement if you are under arrest you shouldn’t speak to the Police because anything you say will be used against you in a court of law. This also mean that the Police don’t have enough evidence to successfully prosecute you therefore they are seeking an Admission or Confession from you. This applies to any Country so my people don’t commit any crime but if you do please protect yourself and your rights and don’t speak to the Police.

Why do we have such a tendency of straying away from topics? A problem has been identified, rather than discuss solutions to eradicate this in our system, we carry on about a grammatical error. That is why things will remain the same. We are forever competing with each other, always trying to outsmart another, in end, things never change. People, we were not all born to be Lawyers and Doctors, our intellectual capacity will never be the same. If makes an an error and you are in the position to correct that person, then do so in a positive way. We must stop being our worst enemies, otherwise, we must all look in the mirror and point the finger at ourselves.

They should have camera operating 24/7 in the mail sorting section of the post office. Tht way the workers will know they will get caught if they tamper with mail or parcels.

That should also be done at the ports. I remember working at the port years ago and they amount of thievery that took place was mind boggling. Some of the worker thought they had a constitutional right to pilfer imported goods.

It’s about time. I wonder if this arrest will put an end to the “tampering of personal mail”.

  20. Tai
    May 8, 2013

Finally!!!! That will teach the rest to come that they may be caught if they try that foolishness again. Many times I send holiday packages to my grand parents and they never receive it. Then the PO knows nothing about its where about. You even get an attitude when questions are asked. Always blaming it on the Dominican Republic. Am so sick of it and am glad the issue is being investigated. Some Dominicans need to Learn to work with integrity and practice discipline.

This thing has been going on for a long time, some of the perpetrators were caught, some escaped prosecution by runing away from DA, some have ended up in jail. Hey, you sure the mail ever reach DA? Sometimes mails get mis-sent to other places right from the place of origin, and of course….they never reach their intended destination. So not every-time we don’t get a piece of mail, is steal somebody that steal it in the post office or elsewhere. Sometimes the tv news have news items where mails reach their intended destinations many many years later. So let’s be real!!!

Ohh ya….How far will one go.. .It’s not the first time!!!…So many letters and parcel got lost when I sent them off from Europa!!….And no one held responsibility when asked what happened?!!..So I wrote “Please not the Dominicanish Republic” in bold letters every time…Cause they told, the letters/parcel may have been shipped there..If so,why was it never sent back on the return address?
That’s why today the registered letters and parcels are traced from the time you post them off at each stops….It cost but worthwhile…I may lose the letters or parcel..But I get my money back!..

    • malgraysa
      May 8, 2013

To be fair to our Post Office, mail from here to Europe gets there quicker than the other way round. I was told it is because many of the European mail services are privatised and employ immigrant labour that may be unfamiliar with geography. Our mail service is also cheaper. It costs much less to send a letter from Dominica to England than from England to Dominica. Not only that, our post office will even sell you a stamp without glue, so you dont have to lick it and chose whether to use glue from a bottle they provide on a string or staple it to your letter. Some joker told me they call it the next-level stamp. You find bad people everywhere and overall, our post office does a good job.
