UPDATE: Police investigate alleged arson at attorney’s office

The police are asking for public assistance as they investigate an alleged case of arson on a building housing the office of attorney, Tiyani Behanzin.

Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, reported that the incident occurred on Wednesday morning.

“Around 5:15 am on May 12, 2013 it was reported that Molotov cocktails were thrown at the building causing damage but the building was not burnt,” he said. “Investigations are continuing.”

He said anyone with information should call the police hint line at 1-800-4468 or the or crime stoppers at 1-800-8477.

Behanzin told Q95 that the bottles were thrown at a window. “It appears some individual or individuals have attempted to firebomb my office by throwing bottles full of what looks like gasoline, or those substances, with a wick, fired at the window,” he said.

He noted there were  “bottles of gasoline all over the roof” of a neighbouring house where he claimed two adults and a young child live.

He also stated that police found other unlit bottles in an alley way nearby.

The former magistrate said there was no damage to the office except the broken glass of the window.

He stated his biggest concern was his neighbour.

“My biggest concern was not the office or myself …the neighbour has a young child, less than a year old or so, and two adults….they live in a wooden house …had there not been water between the two properties, their property could have caught on fire,” he said.

He told Q95 that he will be taking ‘additional precaution’ to protect his life and this won’t prevent him from talking about “some of the issues I had on the streets.”

He said the matter is now in the hands of the police.

Andrew says he is now worried since he lives next to Behanzin's office

Speaking to DNO Clive Andrew, a neighbour, explained that he was awakened at about 5:00 am by some noise. “I saw bottles with fire and one fell on my house and the other hit the window of Behanzin,” he said.

According to him, the bottles came from the top of Cork Street.

Andrew said he is now  worried since he lives with his nine-month-old baby and girlfriend near Behanzin’s office.

“I thought it was aimed at me, I went to get the police and two of them from CID came … they also tried to reach the lawyer but was not able to…he came to his office at about 7:00 am or so,” Andrew said.

You must be the only one that has been asleep in this country, Behanzin was proved right after much of what he tried to start in Dominica. You are refusing to check the 8 who died that he put inside that they put out have since died! You are just wicked or stupid or both to ignore. The man’s sentences were never defended and the previous convictions were never attached, so stay her and glorify violence in the country.

Ftoday mark the 50 th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers. Evers was assassinated for speaking truth to power, calling out wrongness and injustice.

Some ofusask how te heck did we get to this horrible juncture. While many hurried their heads in the sand evil men were allowed to turn our society into one where life and pursuit of justice is of no more significance and that greed and averice must bethe order of the day and the lawlessness and corruption must be protected by any means necessary.

It does not pay to harm others and their property in any way. If you, the perpetrator has children, know that the sins of the father follow him and your children to as much as the third generation. Your household and undertakings will never be blest even though it may appear to be for nothing lasts forever. The Lord knows who you are and has taken note of your wickedness. You will not escape the Lord’s just punishment. It is better to do good than evil. Far better.
Console yourself Attorney Behanzin and be patient while the police conduct their investigation. Something may happen sooner or later and the criminal will be caught. God works in mysterious ways.
You are an intelligent person. Think of which client you served and the person was not pleased with the outcome or whatever you stated in the past few days/weeks that others were not pleased with. In addition, one who is your client and one or more that the client brought charges against who are not pleased. Some investigating could do the trick to catch the perpetrator and if the person was influenced by someone else or others.
This is from someone who knows your family very well. I wish you good luck with God’s blessing and protection.

What is happening here in Dominica? Dumb people, doing dumb things, and dumb people defending idiots and wrong doers. I thought this was meant to be a peaceful, religious island. I can’t believe people are still calling it that. Where is love, peace, justice and spirituality? We’re slowly losing our way. Praying is no longer enough. We have to DO and BE better people. When wrong doing has been done, we must NOT defend it. Where will this all end? If we don’t change by ourselves, spiritual intervention will help us. But be warned, this could be in the form of disasters, of which it will be more difficult for us to come back from. Lets wake up and change our ways.

    June 12, 2013

So can it be assumed that the intended target may not have been Tiyani because of the time of the alledged incident?

Attemtping to firebomb an office at 5 am is quite “strange” esp if the hope was to hurt the lawyer.

Unless…Tiyani has documents that needed “shredding” but in this case, burning…?!

It would be hard to prove that someone wanted to harm Tiyani if it cant be proven that he was supposed to be at the office at 5 am, and it was common knowldege – or known by the assailants.

Otherwise… i’m inclined to think that some one just wanted to destroy files or burn down the office for revenge

It appears that you lack common sense. What is so unusual about firebombing an office at 5 am? The perpetrator chose a time when people are sleeping and all is relatively quiet on the street. It is too bad the Molotov cocktail did not backfire in the person’s face.
Who asked you to prove this? The fact is a crime was committed. Speculation does not prove anything. It is under investigation by the police. In time hope that criminal will be caught.

Wow…please be ready to be on Q95 tomorrow

    • Truth be told
      June 12, 2013

Peeping Tom, Dominica has been independent since 1978 and I was born 10 years before that. Dominica has had about seven administrations since then if you count them as John, Seraphin, M.E.Charles, James, Douglas, P. Charles and Skerrit (don’t worry to much about how long they lasted or who was interim or who died during their term). Now here is my question to you; Do you remember “Dominicans seeing politics and conspiracy by political leaders in everything bad that happened on the island back then?” No, because when bad things happened in the past the politicians dealt with it even if people were not happy about it. Farmers were being terrorized by dreadlocks in their gardens and John dealt with it even though we were not happy with his methods. Corruption in the police force and Eugenia fired commissioner and all and for a moment Scotland Yard came down from the UK to provide training to the force. Crime and corruption in Dominica today like never before and no heads roll, no one disciplined and worse no one takes responsibility. No one takes responsibility for administrative wrongs, error, mistakes. Drugs, guns, murders on our streets and no one responsible to us the law abiding citizens no one answers or explains to us – so yes Peeping Tom, “Many Dominicans see politics and conspiracy by political leaders in everything bad that happens on the island because” no one in authority is answering the call to rise to an honest and just society. Such attacks on law enforcement officials or members of the judiciary is not tolerated in any decent lawful country. The attack on Tiyani today and the twisted nature and politicization of the attack on Emmanuel by all parties and especially the authorities is unbelievable! Don’t you think so, Peeping Tom?

      • Anonymous

Hmm, as if I’ve heard these same words being echoed by a talk show host on a radio station.

      • Peeping Tom
        June 12, 2013

Truth be told: “No one takes responsibility for administrative wrongs, error, mistakes. Drugs, guns, murders on our streets and no one responsible to us the law abiding citizens no one answers or explains to us.”

This is only partly true. Still, the absence of this public accountability should in no way lead us to conclude that they, the officials, are the ones responsible or involved in these crimes. To do so would be to make a logical jump that not even Superman can. Yet, today, certain public personalities are busy using all sorts of fascinating and riveting stories to hypnotise persons into thinking that all evil in this land is politically motivated. In the meanwhile, the real criminals slip away.

Truth be told, you ask: “The attack on Tiyani today and the twisted nature and politicization of the attack on Emmanuel by all parties and especially the authorities is unbelievable! Don’t you think so, Peeping Tom?”

I say, the attack on anyone in a civilized society is to be condemned. As for your link between politics and the GON Emmanuel saga. Politicization of this issue has gotten beyond the “utmost ridiculous” point. I remind you though, that it was Q95 that started the politicization of that fire even while the embers still glowed. Remember the minute by minute commentary and the hypnotic stories and inferences made on that radio station while the public watched the smoke melt away, taking justice with it? I remember. When in our history did we ever witness a radio station publicly create its own theory of a crime against a private citizen, and prosecute and condemn its own slate of culprits?

Indeed, Truth be told, Dominicans are now TAUGHT that any evil they experience in their lives or their neighbourhood is due to deliberate political action; the usual culprits being the PM and his associates. This tendency to see solely in political colours and to ignore other variables has been insidiously and maliciously infused in our society by a gang whose sole strategy to gain political office is through propaganda and political mischief.

I see you attempted to reply to truth be told but that was a very weak response. How do you compare, for example 1976 to 2012/13? In 1976 ther was only one radio station on island, DBS. Did you expect the kind of discussions being engaged in at present to have taken place on the state owned radio? Today we have as many as four other radio stations, which now allows for other anti government views to be aired. In 1976 we had a weekly news paper called the chronicle. Every week this news paper published anti government rhetoric, Nebs and I, comes to mind. So incase you are too young to know, please ask those who were there to give you info.

So because they only giving $20,000 bail for conspiracy for fire-bombing, someone decided to take the risk. Well well, Our authorities need to step up and decide how they execute law. It’s all a big joke. Let’s just wait to hear them that Behanzin did this himself.

It’s a dam shame to hear all the bull that is going on down in Dominica. In Dominica, when you don’t support ignorance they used scaretatics to scare those who are not in support of injustices. I am not surprise look at the head of Dominica Government “he said no law and constitution can prevent him to do what ever he wants in Dominica.” A leader should lead by example. Why should Dominican’s who are not in office respect the law? Dominican’s is time to wake-up; things are not getting any better in Dominica. Poor people children will continue to take jail while the real hardcore criminal politicians runs while in Dominica. I am not into politics but someone cannot tell me those things that’s happening is not political. First in was Emmanuel, then Lennox Linton now Tyani. That is getting out of control and seeing that nobody is doing anything who knows how far it will go. Dominicans must open their eyes and see what is going on around them. We take everything like it’s a big joke. Not because we are poor people we have to settle for all nonsense that’s happening around us. Not because some of us getting a little help from the government we cannot support the people who are being targeted. Those people are only talking, all along i thought there was freedom of speach in Dominica. Now if what they are saying is not true all people have to do is bring in information to prove that they are talking rubbish but if you cannot do that, then there is some truth in what they’re saying. I think Dominica should put politics aside and start thinking of themsleves and te image of Dominica. The politicians are fine, they will be ok after they leave office, forget about them and do what is right for all Dominicans. I think Dominicans must take a stand and if it means a PEACEFUL protest on things that are negetively affecting the Island.

      What a stupid question!

What does the name of this man have to do with attempted murder? You are not concerned about the actually local terrorists who’s actions could have set the whole of Roseau on fire; killing hundreds of innocent people in the process, rather you chose to ask such dumb question?

You are nothing but another Dominican hypocrite, if you do not know by now who he is, and family background, means you are walking upside down in the country!

I hope that the police will be relentless, until the criminals are caught. They have operated boldly, I suspect since they discover that thus far no one has yet suffered the consequences for the attempted murder of Gong Emanuel when they firebomb his house.

With the recovered incinerators, perhaps the police will find some finger print evidence which can be used to capture these criminals and bring them to justice.

That’s the problem, 500 years of praying to Jesus (peace be upon him)! Why are you people praying and including Jesus (p) in your story? Jesus (p) cannot hear anyone, he was a servant of Allah/God. The servant and the master are not alike. He was born, he ate, went to the toilet, was circumcised, did miracles BY ALLAH’S PERMISSION etc. The human being cannot be the creator. When will we reason?

If you had said, ‘Oh Jehovah or O Yahweh’ I would understand.

In short Jesus (p) cannot do any good or harm to Dominica, only the one who SENT HIM can do so.
