Bagatelle woman pleads guilty to stealing lipstick

lipstickA Bagatelle woman has pleaded guilty for stealing of two NYC lipsticks valued at $47.90 from Beauty Wise Store located in Roseau.

Lisa Sandy, 20, appeared before Magistrate Bernard Pacquette on Monday.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Valda Powell, who presented the facts of the case, said Sandy entered the store at about 3:30 pm on March 7th 2015 and proceeded to the fashion area.

She then took two lipsticks and placed them in her bag. She also took two other items and proceeded to the cashier to pay.

However, she did not pay for the two lipsticks.

The store owner realized that Sandy did not pay for the lipsticks and immediately alerted the security officer who questioned her.

“Sir, look it wi, I sorry; I don’t have more money to pay for the lipstick,” she said. “At times I do stupid things and I am sorry I promise not to do it again.”

Sandy told the court that she didn’t feel it was necessary to have been arrested and placed in the cells for two days since she was on her monthly cycle.

But Pacquette told her the detention was necessary because she stole the lipsticks.

He warned that she wasn’t supposed to steal.

Magistrate Pacquette gave Sandy a second chance because he believed she was remorseful and humiliated by the situation.

She was fined $1,000 suspended for one year or in default, three months in prison.

That looks like a MAC Heroine lipstick to me, more likely to cost around U.S.$.16.00. Why use that if your article is about NYC cosmetics, it is very confusing.

The ideal image of beauty the media projects to young women and men makes them feel that they need to have certain items (clothing or make-up) to meet the standards that mainstream media portrays as beautiful. This case is more than just a petty legal issue is has deep underlying psychological , to be more specific self esteem issues. People steal food and clothing for themselves and family members , but these are basic needs. I am not supporting the theft of food and clothing but as far as I am concerned Maslow would never include lipstick as an item needed for survival. Self esteem issues is evident in this case. Perceptions of beauty continue to be skewed by the media and social networks. Young women need to be comfortable in their own skin and not have a heavy reliance on make-up. I have nothing against the use of make-up since it enhances certain facial features and in some cultures it can used as a form of art but i believe that we should embrace our natural state.

pple talking bout the young woman stealing 2 lipsticks. but at the price it is bought, and the price it is re-sold by these suppliers, making profits as wide as the ocean on one sale, did the store really have to press charges against the young woman? really??

there are so many altimatums to pressing charges. make her pay double, ask her to never return to the store, amongst others.

im not condoning what she did, but every body makes mistakes, and as the article said, the courts felt she’s remorseful for her actions. she’s young, with all the vanity ridden peers, i’m sure she must’ve felt some typa way that she cldnt afford a lipstick and she made a mistake. but damn!! with all the nonesense happening with heads of government, police, murderers, drug dealers, GRAND THEFT, ROBBERY.. a young girl steals two lipstics and shes arrested. smh. i feel sorry for d young girl but i say SHAME on the beauty supply store, profitting so much on Dominicans but can’t bare to part with 2…

She was wrong to steal the lipstick. The store could have been lenient and with a stern warning ask her to bring the money for them or take the lipstick away from her. The fact is she took the lipstick and did not pay for it. We have no idea how many lipsticks or other items are stolen from the store on a regularly basis and so they caught someone. A Lipstick maybe a small thing, but 47 x2 is $94.00.

Now if as some writers say that brand of lipstick sells for $0.99 US and a US dollar is $2.68 EC. The store is making a hefty profit on unsuspecting customers with that lipstick. Now that is something entirely different and may worth checking into. In case there is a case of inflated pricing.

What is not yours should not be taken. We all steal at one time or other, we just don’t get caught or we do not consider it stealing. Reading and submitting posts during our work day and not our break is stealing time from your employer. And time is money. Our employer’s.

The so-called justice system in Dominica stinks. Major theft and crime go unpunished while those who commit such petty crimes are fined. I know she had no right to steal but those who violate the law most times go unpunished.
Such is the judicial system in Dominica. Those who are supposed to uphold the law are only concerned about their pockets.

The Dominican justice system is a bunch of mofo BS. A few months ago there was a story about a rapist but DNO said they could not publish his name because of certain legalities. But you can publish the name of a lipstick thief? I read DNO every couple days and it seems the theme of the Dominican justice system is screw the little criminal and set the big criminal free. If that woman was a murdering drug dealer she probably would not have spent 2 days in jail she would have been released from the police station that night. DOMINICA JUSTICE SYSTEM YOU ARE EMBARASSING YOURSELF. Wake up.

That brand of lipstick is a bit more costly than others in store. Really comfortable to wear, I’ve got two but I paid for them. Avyege. You can’t afford it, leave it alone. Now you have to face embarrassment over two stolen lipsticks. Steal for steal, the sanitary napkins instead. At least the issue of need vs. want would perhaps allow the magistrate some sympathy towards you. Come on, young ladies.

Really??? I have thousands of dollars worth of stuff that has been stolen and so do other people. What are you doing about that??? Lipstick is insignificant when it comes to the big picture of theft going on in DA. But it does show the mentality of a lot of people here……..if you want it, just take it from somebody else when you think that they aren’t looking. The police pick and choose the easy cases and the courts make the money. What a scam.
Now you know what is important in DA……..the unimportant and insignificant.

Wow! you can get 2 of those lipsticks on amazon.com for $2.29. Talk about an abuse of power and a colossal waste of the judicial system’s time!!!

  35. March 10, 2015

It is wrong and a crime to steal anything.

Without punishment there would be no justice.

However, the purpose of punishment in a civilized society is not so much to hurt the offender but to teach a lesson and rehabilitate. Justice does not become something less when it is mingled with mercy. On the contrary it becomes more effective.

For stealing two tubes of lipstick worth maybe $3.00 this young woman first spends two days in a cell during her difficult time of the month, and also receives a fine of $1,000.00 OR two months in jail. It appears to me that the two days in the cell was rude treatment. It seems this is a girl who likely does not have money. The $1,000.00 fine is going to be a problem whether it is now or a year from now. The girl is probably not working or would likely have trouble getting a job now. The magistrate knows better than anybody what two months in jail will do to a 20 year old.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

A classic example of taking sledge hammer to crack a peanut. I mean come on, in the world we live in today that should have been with without having the poor young lady spend 2 days in jail.

In terms of the fine, I find it rather hefty for such a petty crime. Just my opinion. How I wish justice was always as swift for everyone. Dominica has finally lost it!

A woman steals 2 lipsticks; her case is rushed through the courts and she is fined 1000 dollars. A woman robs the poor pensioners of their much needed pension and her case is still in abeyance for more than 18 months.

DNO you confused me: “She was fined $1,000 suspended for one year or in default of payment, three months in prison.” If the sentence was suspended why do you say in ‘default of payment’? I take suspended to mean she will only pay if she gets in trouble with the law again within the one year, hence the reason you said and correctly so that she was spared.

    Please help ease my confusion.

    Thank you

    • Someone
      March 10, 2015

I think they meant she has a period of one year to pay the $1000.00 and “in default of payment”, which I believe means if she can’t pay the fine, then she must face 3 months in prison.

    • Teach
      March 10, 2015

@ Joe. . .”She was fined $1,000 suspended for one year or in default of payment, three months in prison.”
This means she has a year to pay the $1,000.00. If at the end of the year that sum remains unpaid, she will be found to be in default of payment in which case she will be imprisoned for 3 months. :)

    • hhmmmmmmmm
      March 10, 2015

She was charged $1000 which is suspended for one year. If she gets into trouble within that year and returns to the court, she will be required to pay that fine of $1000 and should she fail to do so, she will then have to serve the three months in jail.
