UPDATE: Robbery in Portsmouth; robbers got away with loot of $2,600

Onlookers at scene of robbery

Police are investigating another robbery involving masked men which occurred on Saturday at 4:45pm.

Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Kenth Mathew said two masked men robbed the female attendant at the Wade Filling Station located on Grandby Street in Portsmouth.

“The men who were armed with at least one gun got away with $2,600 which was made up of some US dollars, checks and some EC dollars,” he reported.

This is the fourth robbery of a business place by armed masked men which has occurred in the past fortnight.

Two occurred last week at the J.E. Nassief on Goodwill and the McMillan Gas station in Roseau.

The other occurred at the Coca Cola outlet in Fond Cole on Tuesday, October 11.

One arrest has been made in the Coca Cola robbery.

Have any of you realized that the thieves are on DNO just like any of you?that the guns might not be real?that they walk into the place just like any one else?that they take off the mask as soon as they turn their backs heading towards the door/ That they walk out the door like any regular customer and walk towards the get away car with no one suspecting anything. These are pros and they are not scare to get caught.Has anyone thought that these might be inside jobs and the workers should be the first to be questioned. Think on these points.Remember the thieves are reading the post just like the rest of us.

While we want these robbers captured now the reality of it is that it can take a while before they can be captured as well as it can happen today.Give the police some time to do their work.

In this area of Portsmouth someone must have seen the getaway vehicle OR the perps running away from the filling station. It’s time too for this establishment to be updated – a surveillance camera or the register being placed behind 2″ thick plexiglass could help.

    October 24, 2011

Well if I was these guys I would just carry on. I mean NOTHING is being done and nothing is being said since 48 hours.

Where is the description of the getaway car? How many? What types of masks?

If we knew this they could have got these guys in hours instead of months.

This is a small island … we all see everything. just give us some info.

Forget the police… there were a lot of witnesses … come on you ppl tell us what they look like etc. This is YOUR dusty since we have an ineffective police force … we must do their job for them.

To HELLO ANY INFO, you must be an ignoramus to make such a comment. Read yor comment and examine its contents, are you making any sense. Do the police have crystal balls or are they involved in whichcraft , dont you know that the police act on information FOOL. Its just pathetic when serious acts are committed in Dominica and citizens like you hit on the police as if they were at the scene of the incidents, You need to back off and learn something about investigations. You cannot expect the police to comeon the media and disclose info and suspects and leads etc, this is not the way you investigate crime FOOL. You have removed all doubt from my mind that you are a Fool. STUPES

This is my contribution on this situation, because of our greedy business owner who fail to install security camera on their property and the rise in guns and drugs, unemployment and an increase in deportes to our island and bad police leadership, robbing anywhere and i mean anywhere is like taking candy from a kid.i think it is about time the police and goverment get to the next level.the criminals are ahead ,it is time our police service increase eavesdropping, monitor gangs and cyber policing, be more vigilante. i believe before and after every robbery or drug deal a text ,an email or a phone call was made,a license vehicle with a number plate was used.the police need to find the robbers before they strike again which might be fatal,or else we need to reshuffle the police force.new and vibrant leadership, one who is computer savvy and works in the intrest of the country and the police force and not party.

look big move in Da. crime is on a ram-page, as a result of unemployment, fraustration, low salary and the in equalitry of wealth, where the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. i think now our P.M will wake up and realize things are changing people want money and they are desperate for it. They will do anything nowadays but in stead stead our PM rather to take all the money he receives from foreign bodies , by builing a million dollar state palace, when there are people in need wothout a proper roof over their heads as far as homes to sleep. people our contry not getting anywhere and i am not blaming anyone for people wanting to rob someone or a business but if persons we ave chosen to represent our country are not doin wat they should and developing there pockets rather than our country Dominica then wats the use of these persons. we neede to take a stand because dieing slowly but surel until it is no more. NOW IS TA TIME FOR IT.

The way some of you are going on, you would swear is in Dominica only these crimes happen. Did we expect Dominica not to follow the trend of the world? Stupes

Read my comment again, over work your less-than-intelligent brain and tell me where in the comment I endorsed the crime taking place. I simply made a statement of fact, that our crime rate will increase commensurate with that of the global trend. You think that I want to read on DNO about a robbery every few days? Get real. The average human uses 10% of their brain but it seems like you’re using 2.

It is a fact, that Dominicans are very ignorant about what really matters to their island. They fight against each other, most of all allowing evil to scale their land…what is really wrong with Dominicans, God has departed from you because your hands has been used by evil.

  20. INTELLECTUAL GANGSTA
    October 23, 2011

Boy,I’ll tell you something, this is becoming very frustrating and frankly, very disappointing…It’s like there is no end to this trend, and we have no answers to this escalating problem….Crime.
I do not know where we as a Nation are heading. But what i do know,is we need a complete metamorphosis.

I was reading through some of the comment here, and one caught my attention;that was by..”Dat u hear we…”. It was very interesting to me.
Which leads be to make the following analysis;…We need to focus on solutions to problems, instead of pointing fingers,or dwelling on the problems themselves. It is was it is….Man is a social being, and he is influenced by what is happening in his environment. Crime is a social phenomenon.
And in our efforts to combat it,we have to introduce more social programs.

One of the leading methods in Crime fighting,is Prevention…If we begin with “prevention”,we can concentrate on “motive”.
You have to deprive people of the motivation of criminality…

No one person or Political Party has a monopoly on wisdom. So,this leads me to..approach….Yes,the was we approach it.We have to be a little more inclusive…We tend to be too unilateral in our approach and outlook;especially when it comes to social issues, and how we understand them.

Look here,Dominica has very highly educated persons…People with PhD.,Masters, in education and Law and other majors. We have Statesmen…People with great accomplishments….Heck.we even have a person with “SIR” before his name; which means he has attained Knighthood. That is a great distinction and accomplishment…And as Dominicans,we should all, be proud of that…
I am proud to say I was born in Dominica,I walk with my head high, and with a smile;…even if there have not been too much to smile about lately, with respect to the escalating crime problem….
But irrespective of their Political affiliations, or views, they are all DOMINICANS,and therefore,we should be proud of them…I know I am….

Which leads me to say this;…We ought to include these People in policy making,we ought to seek their advice…We tend to get too political in our views, and in conducting the Peoples business…much too unilateral and partisan…

We need to focus on what is in the best interest of Dominica, and its People…And this is the approach and direction we ought to take….Instead of focusing on just Party lines and supporters…We need to be Leaders..of ALL the People…They are all Dominicans…Be a Leader of all the People.

I hear lots of talking,I hear lots of noises…I hear a mighty rumbling..But I see no one emerging…
We need to come together as one….I am appealing to the robbers, the thief, the criminals..Please!..put down your guns, your knives and other weapons of choice….Let us refrain from violence….Let us do some introspection and make an about-face. Turn your lives around, turn from your wicked ways….

Let us try to make Dominica like it was, and incorporate that, with how it ought to be, and together with hard work and dedication, we will make it a better and great Place for us and for our Children…Yes,there may be difficult times ahead; but TOGETHER we will overcome it.

WE NEED TO RESTORE OUR SPIRITS….All for Each and Each for All…
Please!..I am appealing to everyone. We all have to,and must, play our part….

WE need real Substance,Tangibles and Solutions…not rhetoric and propaganda…

May GOD bless us all..And most of all,may GOD bless and protect our Country.

Profound Peace…and..All the best to you..

      OOPS…I noticed a little word..”was”…kicked my behind…but sorry about that..Two corrections..(1)should be..”It is what it is”..

      So sorry about the Typos….
      Thanks….

Inorder to protect the public, it is imperative that our local police mobilise the force and try to arrest/halt this developping culture. Four cases of armed robberies within the space of a fortnight!! There also seems to be an increase in just how brazen these crimes are becoming – They are now taking place in daylight!!! Where are our policemen?? Do they still aim to protect we the people, the citizens??

bapio, thanks for this honest plea and comment, You have proven that we are not all idle bloogers. Parents, girlfriends and others have the info BUT wait until, and in the event they get gunned down when the police catch them with those guns, then and only then will these family members come on dno and other media and say all the nicest things and blame the police for defending themselves agaimst these terrorists. There is no way or police should allow anyone to shoot them first, once you are an armed robber and I am a police officer, I will NOT allow you to open fire on me cauase dead police cannot protect citizens. Its just a mater of time parents and siblings and you will have no choice but to come out.

Criminals of Dominica beware – I will be putting my engineering skills to some new use, to make some booby trap for your arses. And you will become a public spectacle because we the good people are sick and tired of your intimidation and disruption to our country. And we will show that good always overcome evil.
I did not grow up rich, but in no circumstances did I think of harming people and robbing them of their hard-earned income. I have been a victim of robbery, and I hate a robber as long as he continues to be a robber. Find some other means of making money in a legal way! Your persistent effort to disrupt our society has triggered me to do things I have never thought of before – I am very very serious! Watch your tracks – your guns and mask will be useless and you will be the one begging for mercy. This is a warning to you.

    • October 23, 2011

      @Observer

Yeah Oberserver! Good will overcome evil. Those kind persons with the attitude and conduct of wickedness and evil in our Dominica has to know who is control.

Those carnal minded persons who allow Satan to push them into hurting innocent people must suffer the consequences of their wrong doings.

I call for courage and strength; I call for spiritual wisdom, understanding, and guidance, in the name of Jesus Christ, on your behalf, as you execute your plan against wickedness and evil in our Dominica.

May God’s Will be done through His chosen people. Observer, I pray that you are one of us. By the hook or by the crook we shall overcome.

Just do what you are compelled to do! The conducts of wickedness and evil has come too far into our Dominica; mischievously hurting our people and leaving a bad reputation for our country. This conduct must stop! And by the Will of God it will come to pass. Amen!

    Yes its the same people
    Yes their day will come
    Yes its wrong to steal
Yes “if possible” they should find hard work
Yes we can give them prayers
    Yes we can hang them
Yes we can shoot them on site

    But also:
    Yes they have a familY
    Yes they are dominican
Yes they like all men are driven by desires
Yes anyone of our children could choose this life
Yes if we all fail to see that people don’t just wake up one day and decide they going to rob.
Yes if we continue to deny that there is a depressing lack of opportuinty for young people
Yes because young people are higly motivated and very impressionable
Yes because there is no genuine reform for criminals.
Yes it will continue as long as we continue to ignore that we have created a society which is a breeding ground for criminals.
Yes we might catch those, but there might be dozens more being cultivated.
Yes we have to start asking ourselves the hard and relevant questions if we are to stand a chance.

this thing is going on too far now i beleive what all business places in Dominica must do is have proper security electronics ones then and civilians camera. and every electronic security should be connected to the police service so as soon as it happens the police on them.

    • van
      October 23, 2011

Asking to be connected to the police station may be too huge a step. They should certainly instal security cameras and put security guards in place. The public will feel safer and in the long run it will work out cheaper.

You cannot make a statement like that! Think of your ethnicity and imagine yourself in the minority, then this statement was made about you, how would you feel?

Way to go – blame it on the foreigners.

Wake up and smell the sh-t you’re shovelling and admit that there are Dominicans born and bred who are capable of this type of crime.

Its so easy to blame others when things go wrong. When someone decides to leave their country and settle in another, its because they want a better life style, not because they want to commit crime.

    October 23, 2011

Especially during this festive season, and to bring this crime spree to an abrupt end, i believe that special powers such as stop and search should be given to the police in an effort to apprehend and suppress the criminal activities of anti-social elements on island. vigilance must be stepped up and the courts must spare no effort nor show any leniency in sentencing these criminals when brought before the bench and found guilty of active participation in any form of criminal activity.

Let’s hope that the culprits are caught before christmas or worst, before law abiding citizens resort to vigilante styled justice.

Hi, Four Robberies are to many but this is not an epidemic so let us stop making it look like our country is falling apart which it is not. As someone who has an extensive law enforcement background I must ask myself what suggestions can I provide to the police to help them solve those robberies. First, they should form a “BRAM” Unit which stand for Burglary & Robbery Apprehension Madual which will investigate any Burglary or Robbery. This unit shoud be staff by twenty investigators and four supervisors. Each team should have five investigators and one supervisor with all in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles. In that way this unit will be able to scrutinize the roports for similarities like, Time of Day, Description of perpetrators(Height, Weight, Hair, complexion),Mo (Words Said)In that way they stand a better chance of predicting where the robbers might try to rob. Second, they should find out if there were any prisoner recently released who has a robbery background and interview all recently released robbers. Third, They should debrief all paroles or people on probation and all recently arrested individuals in an attempt to gather intelligence which would assist them in solving those robberies. They should aslo scrutinized the cellphone towers to determine which phones were log on for the shortest time period. In that way they can pay specific attention to the individuals who own the cellphones. Also we must remember that a number of festivals and our independence is around the corner, Then we have Christmas holidays therefore, I can only assume that the Police Commissioner should know that he must put more plain clothes units in unmarked vehicles on patrol because of the coming events. I do not know if the police have a description of the perpetrator in the three previous robberies but if they have then they should make posters and offer a reward for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the perps. The businesses that was robbed are major businesses therefore, I wonder if they had interior or exterior surveillence cameras. If not the government should give them a three thousand dollars tax deduction to install cameras but to qualify for such tax deduction they must provide a copy of any surveillence tape the police needs without a court order or a Search Warrant.

    • Reality
      October 23, 2011

Firstly, the police are doing a great job with collecting information. Robbery is something Dominicans don’t stand for and they have been very forthcoming with information.
Secondly, to make another task force in the police department is not necessary; you stated in your first line that things are not whaling out of control and it’s not an epidemic so let’s not get out of hand.
Thirdly, most of what you’ve suggested is normal procedure, however, I will commend you on the idea of the tax cut for installing cameras and making it available for further use.
Finally, yours was one of the best comments here so far. It was well thought of and well written. May I say thanks for that. Some of the people who comment here don’t seem to have made it through primary school. It’s scary and sometimes embarrassing to read their comments even if they make really important and valid points.

        October 23, 2011

Hi, I agree with you that the Police is doing a good job. After posting my comment I reliazed that I should have said that. If the Police Department do not have such a unit then they should established such unit which is not the same as a task force. Also as I said my post containd suggestions but if someone within the Police Department can take one thing from my post which would help that investigator solve any crime then I am satisfied. (Thanks Love from NY).

No. 4 in less than 2 weeks. No eye witnesses, no leads, no ones talking. I just cant believe that in a place like Dominica where people tend to mind other peoples business, no one knows/or sees Jack sh-t.

I’m not one to jump to conclusions, nor am I Miss Marple, but its pretty obvious that they are linked.

Where are the police foot patrols (I dont expect them to be on every street corner), but some visible presence is needed. We have become to complacent, to smug, believing that this sort of thing does not happen in Dominica, and when it does happen some automatically say its all down to the lawless leaders setting a bad example, or its down to unemployement.

The level headed will kow that crime will happen no matter who leads or how many people are employed, and that we should not use excuses to justify wrong doings.

Time for the PM to address the nation, time for him to let these low life scums of the earth know that, enough is enough and that they will be hunted down and punished.

Explaining the secular trend in criminal participation rates in most developing economies is a difficult task. Many social scientists argue that crime is closely related to work, education, poverty and that truancy, youth unemployment, and crimes are by-products or even measures of social exclusion

Wake up Dominica, your citizen are crying out for help. They are crying out for opportunities, a decent life, a good education, good healthcare, justice, food on their tables, clothes on their backs, and just providing their children’s basic necessities.

That is just a taste of the societal decay that will encompass Dominica if something is not done!!!!!!!

Country hard, ppl sick and tired. I not condoning these acts buts incentives and opportunities have to be put in place to curb the young ppl mind set. Money should be invested in positive vibes that in the future can help the young ppl reap profits from it. Speculating and cracking down harder on these criminals is not going to solve the problem. It needs to be irradicated from the source.

This is highly ridiculous. It is obvious that we have a very serious crime problem in Dominica. At this point, I call for an extreme, drastic approach particularly for property crimes and hard drugs (cocaine, heroine, etc),and also rape.

These draconian measures, hopefully temporary, along with the implementation of a vigorous curriculum on social and moral values geared toward our pre-adolescents should shake up the Dominican society in the next decade or two.

only the fear of God people….man law is a joke if you can break it and beat it…and there will always be those who are looking to do just that…..we need the love and fear of God in our hearts…………..

lets be real how much of us do something illegal for a million bucks knowing that we will never ever get caught… there is no chance of it ever coming out in the open…….an act such as failing to appear as a witness in order that someone evades a conviction( and being paid a significant amount of money for it)…..there are many upstanding people/jurors who have been bought by drug dealers

you weight the pros and cons…you start to think who am hurting here…and I’m sure anyone can justify their decision

well a crime is a crime….though some are more cruel than others as in the case of rape and murder……
so in our hearts most of us are not much better than these thieves…..we need the fear and the love of God in our hearts…

      • October 23, 2011

        @Tiny

I gave you a thumbs up. but your correction is still wrong. For people we need to say “how many” So you need to say “how many” of us will do.

“How many” people are in your church and “how much” money do they collect from offering. Okay!

Anyway keep up the good work!

And if the majority of us would come together in one mind, one heart, and one accord through sincere faith and trust in God’s authority in our lives; and to call upon Him, in such manner; He will indeed, hear our call to execute His wrath, against the enemy; so that disobedient, wicked, and evil “human beings” will discover that God Almighty is the Living God through His Person, Jesus Christ.

Yeah, God Almighty of Love–in Spirit, Truth, and Holiness–is the God who is slow to anger, but when He does become angry, He always swings that bat of His wrath without striking out!

Many people, like those in our Dominica who are going around doing wickedness and evil, as if they are untouchable, will have much more than regrets, that they allowed God to choose them as the baseballs that He needed to swing at.

Yeah! God is always His own pitcher and hitter–that is why He does not strike out. Oh you foolish man! Why do you continue to provoke the wrath of the Lord God?

Yeah, Dear God, along with my fellow God fearing Dominicans I call to You, that you: Let Your Will be done in our Dominica.

Your Will O God, to cleanse, conscecrate, and sanctify the minds of our people, that they might begin to respond to conscience, where You connect Your Love to us, and continue to build us in Love, which is Spirit and Truth.

May those who try to rebel against this revolution of their minds, Your desire to invade their lives, that they might live and not die; let them experience their own demise, because of Your wrath. Let it be done dear God, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
