Buggery, unlawful sexual intercourse, burglary, violence cases in September assizes

The September Criminal assizes was officially opened this morning.

In what will be the final of these assizes held in Dominican courts, the majority of the matters brought before Justice Birnie Stephenson-Brooks received not guilty pleas.

The five persons who appeared were charged with violence-related offenses while three matters of burglary surfaced. There were five sexual offenses cases including an unlawful sexual intercourse and buggery matter involving a 17-year-old-boy. One other man was also charged for bestiality.

Dexter Jno Baptiste, an escaped prisoner, did not appear for arraignment as he has not yet been recaptured.

Three men-Jamal Thomas, Ransom Thomas and Rodriguez Auguiste appeared jointly charged for burglary while Jamal Thomas had a second charged with unlawful wounding. They all pleaded not guilty.

Kimani Roberts pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Jervonne Defoe in December of 2008.

François Bannis was sentenced to pay a $6,000 fine for wounding with intent.

The state was represented by the Director of Public Prosecutions Gene Pestaina and state lawyer Wayne Norde.

More details on these cases in subsequent reports.
