Calibishie residents organize march against crime

Concerned residents of Calibishie will later today stage an event dubbed the ‘White Peace March’.

The event comes on the heels of a stabbing incident in that community which left 18-year-old Julien Joseph of Vielle Case dead.

“We want to say that enough is enough. Last Friday’s incident was petty and stupid and it should not have happened and it’s really tarnishing the name of our beautiful village. We want to take a stand on crime and violence in Calibishie,” noted the event’s organizer Webster Marie.

The participants of the march will dress in white, as a sign of hope, he said.

According to Marie, the participants will march through the village of Calibishie, congregating at the school for a brief discussion on the way forward for the community.

“We want the villagers to come out and speak because they are the ones the crime is affecting. It’s a strong statement that we want to issue today. We have placards indicating just how we feel about the matter. Crime, violence and drug is affecting our community,” he said

Meanwhile, the Dominica Social Justice and Peace Committee and the Dominica National Youth Council have also condemned the stabbing incident.

Director of the Committee Father Franklyn Cuffy has described the killing as “senseless”.

He is urging all concerned to join the White Peace March.

He said the 2010 Peace Torch, which was installed at the Peace Concert on January 22, 2010, will be arriving in Calibishie at around 4 p.m., escorted by officers of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force.

The Peace Torch will be carried through the village and returned to the primary school where it will be installed.

The rally will be held under the theme “Hope for a better tomorrow for our children.”

I commend the organizers and the entire community of Calibishie for putting together this March.
What happen to the young man was very unfortunate. Together as a community you all can heip irradicate this senseless acts of violence, drug abuse and other crimes in this “sweet” little village. This is a start!! BRAVO

@Mr Johnson you need to shut the hell up if you don’t know what the word PEACE is ;because the main reason for the march is to educate the youngsters about violence-that is to help stop it and @young man in Dominica you say u have a degree ;in what??? illiteracy because you sure not sensible, can’t even spell…You two should get a life ….just plain out stupido

Mr. Johnson and Young Man In Dominica is just showing everyone how immature, egotistical, and narrowminded they are. A degree huh…..these killers from Calibishie are along your same wavelength. They did walk with their “tools” . Guess where they are now. If yu doh put cocoa outside, doh look for rain. You guys sound like young braying donkeys from a bad western movie. Lol. Guys who wanna hit before they get hit are usually the ones to go down first. With you crass mentality, you may not have the long life u “strapping” to achieve. Sweet Dominica, I’m all for peace.

Young Man in Dominica, didn’t you say that you had a degree. Is that a degree in stupidity?.. Jack*** !!
I’m from Calibishie I left there when I was 16yrs old now I’m 46yrs, Back then there were issues with young people, and it’s still exist and will continue into the future.
What’s happened to that young man was very unfortunate and the perpetrators should be punished, but what you saying is citizens from Calibishie and Dominica strap on their tools like its the wild west..
The White Peace March’ is a way forward to put and end to this..
In the mean try and take some courses in common sense and stay of public sites like this …you are a distraction..

You people have no idea, You all just have no idea how it really is out there on the streets. I know the fact that i supported the comment is not the best to younger persons than me but its a reality we have to face its dangerous out their. If you walk the street here in dominica and you carry out a search 7 out of every 10 young persons has a weapon so where does these ods leave you.And you people want to know what makes it worse POLICE in dominica not helping the situation at all at all at all the are actually more of a problem.Police here dont respect peoples rights they violate your rights as a citizen it is so easy for a police to lift their hands at people its not funny thats not right. In order to put crime in a wraps first place that needs address is the dominica police force plain and simple, to add insult to injury they lack basic skills and judgement in crime fighting.who vex with my comment lost i live and see it every day.I am not one of those that live in no big fancy house with my mammy and daddy i was raise pour i raise a pour malawa i live and see it. I now hold a degree today and work hard for my money but i know what it is here in dominica i know the reality, I say i walking strap cause i will not go donkey beach with a woman in my car to be kidnap, i will not walk the streets to be stabbed, i not opening a business to be rubbed, i will not make a daughter to be rapped, i will not wear a chain and have someone just take it. so walk in my shoe before u jump and judge me live a the life of the normal/Avrage man then you can judge.

Greetings in the name of my Master,Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,There are too many parents that fail to discipline their children, and when they get in trouble they blame others, drugs, friends, etc, etc.
If you can’t control your Sons and Daughters when they are five years old, what makes you think you can control him at sixteen.
We fail to discipline our kids and we call it self esteem, the problem with Children is a lack of discipline,We celebrate carnival more than We celebrate Easter. We say Dominica is a God fearing Island, but We don’t attend Church with our family on Sundays.
The Midnight Grovers have a song(They”re walking half naked and they’re saying La teh a clay way)The World is enlighten, but today the World is in more darkness than ever.I have seen People like Rev.Al Sharpton and Rev.Jackson match to try to stop crime, and a few hours after there are two or three murders in the USA.
Too stop crime you have to change People’s heart, and the only one who can do that is Jesus Christ, without God in your Children life there is nothing you can do.So start disciplining your Children when they are small,(I said discipline, not abuse)anyone with commonsense knows the different between discipline and abuse.
Make sure they know everything you can teach them about God,take them to Church when you are going, let them sit together with you, teach them to work hard in School and whatever they want they have to work for it,teach them to trust you,and do the same.
Let them know that respect is earn not given, obey the law, respect their elders,Friends, those in authority, etc, etc.teach them not to touch what that doesn’t belongs to them.let them know that crime brings shame and disrespect to them and their family, and can only destroy their future.
Let them know to always be a leader and not a follower, not to follow those who have no respect for their Parents and authority. So matching is alright but it will not stop crime, discipline is the key to stopping crime.may God keep blessing the Children and protecting them always.Amen.website,http://rawlinspacquette.weebly.com

Goood effort with the peace march. I am of the opinion that more ought to be done regarding the engaging of the youths around Dominica. Money has to be spent on programs for youth development and sports. These young folks got to find another alternative to a life of crime and a complete attitude of ” i have given up on dreams and a brighter future”. Positive programs in terms of the development and enhance of proper family values should be part of the development plan.
If these things are not done immediately well well: expect more negative behaviours and total disregard for the law of the state.
One thing with Dominicans as far as i am concerned is that we tend to be a reactive society instead of being proactive. People always talk after the party is over or the crime has beeen commited. For goodness sake fix the “I” in crime if we wanna move forward.
Ps: ease the tension amongst the young folks by engaging them in some solid programs. Positive vibration!

Taking a positive step in ending the ignorance of crime and violence which seem to be taking over our lovely island, is wonderful. Organizers of the “White March” must be commended for taking the steps to lead a peaceful march in the hopes of educating our young people and letting them know that “violence is not the answer.” At eighteen years old you are just beginning to live ……. having it ended so senselessly…… should make us all realize that there is a problem in our society which needs to be urgently addressed before we loose more or our young people. They are all brothers and sisters so learning to have positive discussions instead of fighting with each other where one has to to kill or be killed, only leads to more violence.

Parents of these children also have a responsibility to teach them that violence is not the answer; because, to every child killed there are two families who have actually lost their children. This is very sad. Unless we invest the time and maybe some money into getting our children involved in groups, sports and other areas which are positive to their developmental stages, we will continue to witness this kind of behavior.

Most young people are crying out for help, they are willing to follow the right path, they crave attention; however, they must have positive roll models who are willing to help them work towards their goal in order to achieve their full potential. “The children are our future teach them well and let them learn the way, show them all the beauty they posses inside.”

Best of luck with the “White March.” May the results be fruitful and yield positive rewards of hope, trust, understanding, and actions, as young people look towards a brighter future……,one free of drugs, crime, and violence.
