Lead Facilitator of the Police Recruit Syllabus Orientation Workshop, Gerald Phillip, has made a call for greater use of technology in police forces across the region.
Speaking at a graduation for officers of the Regional Security System (RSS) at the end of a four-day syllabus orientation workshop on Friday, Phillip said various processes in regional police forces are outdated and need to be standardized.
“The entire training process must be looked at again divorcing it from tradition and encouraging the proliferation and indeed the compulsory delivery of technology,” he said. “Technology not just in delivery but in practice and policing in the region must assume greater technology and ICT.”
Phillip added that it is challenging to deliver and work with instructors without information technology since the criminal forces are armed with the same technology.
Meanwhile, Chief of Police, Daniel Carbon, urged instructors to take the profession of being a police officer seriously.
“Just like the pilot, the doctor, the architect, the lawyers, policing is a profession and here lies the importance of standardizing the police recruit training syllabus,” he stated. “The pilot must go through his checklist and pilots right across the world have a fundamental procedure to follow and I believe police officers, especially among our regions, should be the same.”
He indicated further that police officers should be performing efficiently despite their locations.
Eleven instructors from the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force and six from the Royal St Lucia Police Force received certificates on completion of the workshop.
We want irish for commissioner.
Lord if only they knew, In my days in the force I witness certain persons recruited in the police force with 12 and fifteen subjects, do I have a witness here, “OH holy cow”. they did not know how to write a proper statement for an indecent language case. While we all blow our top on what and who should be recruited in our police force, policing is not about how “SMART” one is, But is how “Clever” a person is and have the ways and means in applying what was taught at training school. That’s why we always say policing is not for any JACK. How we always feel we know the remedy for every thing and any thing. Man, I am sorry for those who get caught up in todays generation of entitlement syndrome. Please help us Lord. Been there, done that!!!!!!
It’s sad to see that they don’t even realize that they have the power of the law on their side. Just last month a whole set of legislation was passed in parliament including a revised Electronic Evidence Act giving the police the powers to seize and search computers, phones etc for illegal activities. Yet still, I am sure they do not have at least 3 trained persons who can do that yet alone bring evidence in court and testify as an expert witness.
@shaka zulu: I totally agree with you. If you really want to create employment, look to us being trained in our respective fields instead of encouraging us (no forcing us IT people) to migrate because you do not recognize us as professionals like doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, architects etc.
They have cell phone. That is enough technology for them!
Hold your own Comm…. MR Carbon D.
the fact remains that the overall police force too dumb to apply technology. there are mainly ppl with 2 and 3 cxc subjects in this cdpf what a joke.
Its not the number of CXC’s /GCE’s that matter, but rather the aptitude. An Aptitude Test for entry into the police force, may well discount many of those with CXC’s and GCE’s.
And by the way, its the highly qualified gurus who have this world’s economy in a mess.
@ holiday island boy. The worlds economy is a mess because of greed. Nothing else. The inteligent ones have put the quest for aquiring more over there better judgment.
Who would you suggest to fix it
I agree. We are too slow to adjust with change in time. For a start take out the “Royal” in the name of the institution.
Secondly, you guys need to start recruiting from college graduates who have specialize degrees in applicable fields lik accounting, ti investigate financial fraud, computer programming ect. One way to accomplish this is by adjusting the pay scale to match these skills/ knowledge for recruits. In other words all recruits nor paid the same
