Newly appointed police commissioner, Cyril Carrette, says one of his first acts of business is to ensure that the men under his command are comfortable and the people he now serves as the “top-brass” are safe.
“I will be doing a human resource audit to see where we can put the men to work and get better results from them. I think if we have too many persons in one area we can shift them around to ensure we have a good equilibrium in the man power resources that we have,” Carrette said.
He admitted that the standing manpower, though scarce, could be effectively utilized if properly managed. “We will try to see what we can to alleviate the plight of the officers to ensure that we get maximum production from them,” he said.
He said the officers must understand that they will not get everything but efforts are underway to address their most pressing plights.
Carrette will hold the office of chief police commissioner until next March.
How ridiculous, Mr. Carette. Now Mr. Carbon rflect on all that
Please address the issue of low morale in the Police service. So many of these guys look de-motivated and to some extent un trained in so areas. Please ensure that the police officers receive on going training. Please ensure that in all police stations there are exercise programs as well.
It is clear on the part of some officers that after morne bruce training done so its time to have fun. Make sure u all have a scale to check the weight of the officers – so they can run down criminals like quick silver. Make sure u all tell them bout dieting and so forth .. and healthy life style. Is there a police welfare Association? well this group should be putting self development programs in place for officers. Such programs would bring some much needed professionalism into the police service…
make sure u all promote the guys when their promotion time is due
when the time is due – get a foreign commisioner instead of one acting – I think a foreign commisioner is better for Dominica.
What is the comissioner qualifications?
The Commissioner talked about the welfare and safety of the men under his care.. If my memory serves me right, there’s this ongoing court case involving two Carib Police Officers which is going on for three years now! Aren’t these officers under his care also? Why is it he is being quiet about the whole issue?
Witnesses are backing down and the prosecution is yet to have grounds! Mr. Commissioner, these two officers should get back to duty; serving their country. Do something about it because apparently they are still under your welfare!!
I would just like to add that there are women in the police force and as commissioner it’s not acceptable that he’s refering to all staff as “men” and “man power” and the “men” under his command. I believe that his comments should be more educated and reflect the fact that there are women working just as hard as men. I am not a woman by the way, just appreciate them.
@Me
That is why i ask the question. The Deputy Police commisioner manages the force. He sounds like he should have been doing that a long time. Apparently he was not. Or the commisioner was holding him back.
Anyway hope he knows good leaders lead by example and example leaves in records.
my apologies i spoke to soon
As a deputy commissioner human resource fell under Carrette’s portfolio, so why is it now he is talking about the officers welfare. Maybe he should leave that job to Carbon, seeing that he did not do a good job in that department; as he was too busy trying to frustrate the guys under his command. What he should try to do now is repair all the demage Hobes did, and frankly speaking am not sure he is up to it.
@Fairplay: A agree. Hand over the Immigration Division and parts of the traffic department to civilians.
You spend how many months in Morne Bruce training to be shuffling papers???
Leave basic administrative duties to the civilians and let’s see more police on the beat!
@Patat:
how did u arrive to that conclusion that he was not supporting the head of the police force?????????
The Dominica Police Force needs a lot of change…starting with the uniforms…old colonial khaki or black and grey doh making nobody respect them…just an idea..
GIVE THE MAN A BREAK LET US SEE WHAT DIFFERENCE HE CAN MAKE. STOP THE NEGATIVITY MAN
@Dominican Lover #2:
YOU ARE A POLICE MAN. HOW COME YOU SO SMART. COULD NOT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ANY BETTER, OBVIOUSLY WITH A FEW LESS GRAMATICAL ERRORS.
@LCM:
FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THE DEPUTY IS THE ONE RESPONISBLE FOR THE DAY TO DAY RUNNING OF THE POLICE FORCE. SHOULD HE NOT BE RESPONISBLE TO THE PROPER PLACEMENT OF HIS MEN? HE WAS UNDERMINDING HIS BOSS?
You see that is d problem I have with deputies in a team.
Dem man does never provide strong support to their head when he or she around.
Bam , d other man go on leave and all of a sudden this one well creative!!!! Why? To get d praise and d glory.
I want to know if dem big man dere not communicating with each other.
Ideas like that should have been communicated to the head and the Police Service Commission in a strategic document over a year ago since you all have been in these positions.
Talk about malicious compliance by some second in line and undermining tactics.
I refuse to believe that d man that on leave lack vision and competent leadership qualities. If that is d case why should a man that can see allowed to be lead by a blind member.
THAT’S THE FOREIGNER WE WERE WAITING FOR MAN. WELCOME SIR CARRETTE.
Mr. Carrette,congratulations to you and your NEW DEPUTY on your appointments until March 11 or whenever. But you sound like an acting chief who came out of space and landed at Melville Hall on Monday. Wern’t you the Deputy to the Commissioner. What you are suggesting now regarding an audit of the man power seems like a logical development tool. But weren’t you the PRO, and then the Deputy to suggest that to your management team. That statement sounds like a suggestion from a Deputy who was just waiting in the slips to be the Sherriff to show off his colors.
Like all Dominicans, we have to fight crime and fight it hard. Who make the crime must serve the time and all of us will support that I am sure the leaving Commissioner would have supported that too………. But be careful, if we realize that youre just talk only……Crapaud will smoke YOUR pipes in dealing with the PUBLIC and you wouldn’t deserve OUR support……….
How come the commisioner is still acting? Acting is real real movie like – the man himself will never feeel a sense of stabolity. who knows when the new commissioner is selected well u know the acting one will ntop act again. I will be time to go home and act no more. How knows go and become a real actor in some police movie! Sort the acting issue out real fast
HE WAS OVERSEAS MAN.
Congrats!
The members of the ploice force must be commended for their hard work, However, we need more police officers in the proper places. I find police officers esp in the country areas are too relaxed, sometimes they stay in the stations all day until there is a call, they need to patroll more, next to schools, make sure vehicles arent driving too fast, next to bus stops, credit unions, etc, etc, they need to pass by once in a while, let their presence be felt. This wont stop crimes but it will help alleviate it
Was that not his role as deputy commisioner?
Every time the police force crying about their man power scarce, yet every year or more it have new police officers training and graduating? And in the same instance that happens, when you call the police station, nobody not there, vehicles not there? I say BULL**** allu know the rest!
The Government could hand the Immigration Division over to civilians( as in Antigua and Grenada) and free up the officers to do police work.
