DDA official in hot water

US police mugshot of Kathleen Cuffy

A Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) official has landed in hot water in Florida, according to reports reaching Dominica News Online.

DDA’s Head of Product Development, Kathleen Cuffy, was detained on Friday (July 13) in Broward County, Florida.

Forty-one year old Cuffy’s said to have been arrested for petty theft.

DNO will continue to follow that story.

The matter is set for hearing on August 30, 2012. Heard that she was back at work but was granted bail. A simple matter where she was bailed for less than US$50.00. The American system is very prejudicial. I wonder if it was an American whether they would subject them to such treatment. If she has a green card, she stands to lose it if found guilty. Pray hard. She has a child.

if kathleen cuffy is booked by florida police for petty theft. She has the responsibility to prove her innocence. it is unfortunate that she had to be booked for this offense. i am not sure if she will be kept incarcerated or bailed. they (florida police) will come up with all kinds of things, including, lie detector tests, finger prints…etc. sorry that this happened… i will not be a judge of her situation. i will leave that for the courts. i think she has a good lawyer.

i am not sure what this negative publicity will do to her future in tourism if she is found guilty. if she is found innocent, well she could become a millionaire when she start to sue…

Sorry to hear that… but i am not a legal mind so i cannot comment further… that is for the lawyers, prosecutors, jury and judge to decide…

for those criticizing, just remember, we are all sinners…

      July 18, 2012

There is no update on the situation. What is going around online is a rumor. The same person who started a chain mail when this unfortunate incident occurred is now probably feeling guilty and has now started another chain mail saying there is an update.

All you just want DNO to make things up just like that then.

I always have a problem with the way we carry news in Dominica. Graduations were just around the corner and you have not seen one report on DNO about the excellent performance of some of our students, not an interview or report. But this type of story is too uplifting for us Dominicans that’s not what we want to hear, we want to hear about our family, friends, neighbours falling. That’s what we Dominicans like to hear. There are Dominicans abroad being arrested, why is it that they don’t make the local news. How will DNO undo the damage done by reporting this after she is found innocent?

all allyuu Dominican suckers dat wanted to crucify poor Kathleen in allyuu look it just coming in over de wire,

u will be happy to know that charges were dropped for cathy. and at least 6 lawyers on the case. it was the cashier’s fault for not removing a security tag on her purchases and when she went through the door it beeped. some stupid uneducated retarded moron security that decided to call police although the store did not want to because they realized what happened. she also had her receipt in allyuu

    • Uhuru
      July 18, 2012

Why would an innocent person need six lawyers to handle their case. Stop giving out false info to Dominicans. Her fingerprints and mugshot will always remain on file with law enforcement. She has a court date coming up soon and if she don’t show up or isn’t represented by a lawyer, a warrant will be issued for her arrest. Like I said before in my earlier observations, she has to prove that she didn’t conceal merchandise in her bag and walk past all cash registers like the security cameras showed she did !!

All the people with the negative comments might just be living in glass houses. Some of you have children and you don’ know what they will become! God don’t like ugly! The Negative vibes on there you all do not know Kathy! Basically she is a Dominican ambassador based on her job — she has represented Dominica with strides from the days of NDC and now DDA. Don’t forget that! And let us not be too quick to judge some we do not know. It is definite non of our business. Kathy a judge is going to just throw that out! Love you!!!!!!!

You know what! Each to his or her own and if that is how you all feel about Kathy! You know what! You do not know her! Someone who has traveled the world and been to America countless times! There is no way I could believe that! Accidents do happen and mistakes happen and many times they are innocent ones. If someone had already shopped X amount of goods in a store, why did such petty thing had to go thus far. It would have been better, if they had just asked her to pay. But there is no way in hell I believe my Kathy would do such. Technically the woman is a Dominican Ambassador, for many years. Please people, stop with all the negative about someone you do not know at all. Kathy, Sy and Baby you will be in my prayers. All will be well because a judge is going to throw this case out out out!!!!

    Bordiay 8-O

Best Kathy run for Prime Minister man?

I don’t know what happened, but whatever it is took place in Miami, the US, where every business every store every office has a camera.

I would like to believe that before an arrest is made and someone is charged, a review of the relevant security camera would be made before making a determination papa bordiay.

But alas, Hunter said in his song “typical dominican”…when we love somebody…they can burn down a city they never guilty.

But anyways, I’m sure the rest of the story will come out.

I know someone who earned over US $400,000 per annum, stole $23,000, lost his partnership, and could no longer practice law. Remember the parable of the ewe lamb. Therefore, while you stand behind your friend and hope for the best, do some introspection because what I am getting here is that a lot of you would be quick to believe this if it was someone without a title that was in this predicament and that mentality must change. At any rate, I wish her the best.

DNO…I think by now the story should be updated. By now some clarity should be given on this situation. I think this is a misunderstanding and I do not know her. Give her the opportunity to clear her name. I know how easy it is to get distracted or even a associate makes a mistake and have you take the fall for it…Please work harder in getting an interview from her so this can end. Every day that goes by without the actual truth tarnishes her name more.

My analysis: The problem is not Kathy and what she may or may not have done. The problem is not the story in itself because this happened on Friday and the girl was all fine and doing well. The problem for her started on Monday after the article was published. The article was published around the same time that Dominicans were rejoicing and celebrating by calling one another to spread the word.

So who or what is the destructive agent here? just a thought…

Just the other day people were chastising Thomson Fontaine for reposting a story he found on another website. SO basically, I am little confuse as to what Dominicans stand for.

I can’t believe that DNO is posing a story of a “PETTY THEFT” incident that occurred in the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. Is news all you don’t have, is not all you fault. DNO did not need to embarrass the lady like that. This incident probably did not even the Broward County Newspaper.

It may not be in the Broward County Newspaper but it is on the World Wide Web. Petty theft or not it is news and that’s what DNO and other news media is all about. It may have been an accident, it may be sad and embarrassing to the lady but yet there are many other persons such as parrows, that have found themselves in the same and or similar situation and no one commented and said the news should not have been published. I agree, that the news media should use their discretion in publishing certain news item but let us not be prejudice because it is a friend or family

OH DOMINICA weep not for Kathy but for your sons and daughters who are so quick to tear into each other. If this happened to a Jamaican, right or wrong the entire Jamaican community would have rallied around her. What is wrong with giving the benefit of the doubt? People do stupid things, but ah magwaysah you think a woman will leave all the way Dominica, pay for items valued over US 100 and choose to steal something worth UNDER 2.00? I tell you my people you all live in vacuums and have no idea how things happen in these parts. The person who leaked this is even worst than the cops, but today is hers, tommorows is ours. This is why I stay away from Dominicans. I will do anything to empower my people, but alas, our behaviour, tribalism and lang wapo is scary!

Rise up woman, dust yourself off, straighten your shoulders and walk tall!! This is a test of faith, loyalty, deceny and human dignity. Don’t give those who are dancing another song to dance on. Claim trimuph in the name of the most high. We fall down, but we get back up. Women, Dominican women in particular stand up for your sister, stand up for other women, stop dragging each other down.

Tri-State Beauty that’s is true. If anything happens to any Arab where I live, cars would be on fire all over the place. Even the Prime Minister would be on the T V to ask forgiveness. Most of the time, the relatives have to come out speaking to have the Arab community to stay calm. I don’t care how many thumbs and fist I have down. I have my opinions, and will stick to it. I just want to say Dominicans to like to backbite and rejoice over the shortcomings of their brothers and sisters. And to conclure; if the country (America) is rich it’s because of the blood and sweat of our fathers and mothers. They had it for free and by force. They are not better than her.

She will overcome it and as my mom says ‘it’s just a nine day wonder’ after those nine days Dominicans will find something else and someone else to talk about. Last nigth I went to Walmart here in Broward county and bought a $30.00 item, along with some other items. I did NOT use self check out because the line was way too long there so I waitied for a cashier to become available. I put my goods on the belt and she cashed and bagged the items. i quite unconcerned, swiped by debit card, got my receipt, bagged items handed ot me by the cashier, and walked out.

This morning i am putting the stuff away and realized that for some reason she did not charge me for the $30.00 item. This was not my fault neither was it hers. For soem reason she forgot or overlooked ringing up that item. In light of that I cannot judge this woman when somehting like this could happen to anyone. Broward County FL sherrifs are quite racist and with the amount of West Indians down here (particularly Hatians, I would not be surpised if she was railroaded and chaged innocetly. i hope she gets a good lawyer to help her in this situation. She could either pay the fine or choose to fight it.

I know oyu bioeffy ones wanna know if i brought back the $30.00 item. The fact is; firstly, I have not decided yet and secondly, it is none of your DYAMN business!

This lady may be innocent and it may be a misunderstanding or just a simple error…. This was this story where this pregnant lady, her husband and two kids went into a store in Hawaii and during shopping she picked up a sandwich to eat because she was hungry and forgot to pay when she got to the cashier. She was arrested and had to spend a night in jail. This made headlines in America.
Things like that happen all the time… people are sometimes absent minded. I don’t think the lady meant to not pay since she was purchasing other things but sometimes it happens…

Something is missing here. Ok, she accidentally walked out of the store with something she may have forgotten to pay for (it happens to everyone) and they arrested her just like that? They did not ask for them to search her bags and if they did, was she giving them a hard time? People don’t just get arrested just like that. Being familiar with my own people, I have a feeling that lady was putting up a front when she should have humbled herself and thus was arrested.

OK, what about all those people who when they are in the supermarket, eat all the grapes before reaching the cash register?

What about all those people who take home all the ensure from the nursing home?

what about those people who take home stationery without permission from their employers?

what about those people who walk in to work late and leave early?

what about those people spend all day on DNO, facebook and Skype while on skype?

Just what about all those other little things that we do without permission when no one is watching?

What about stealing love on the side?

He that is without sin, please go ahead and cast your stone.

Ok, I vex now. Dominicans too bloody wicked and hypocrite. They all over the girl case for a little allegedly 2nd degree petty theft. They post the girl picture all over as if she is the worse person ever. Let me tell you about the worse persons ever, it is those men in Dominica, those child molesters who continue to rape our children and spoil them forever. Let us see their pictures posted so that all can see.

Many of them are convicted yet no one knows who they are. They are set free to roam about the communities. There are fathers who are raping their children as if it they have the license to do so. Let us see their pictures posted. Maybe if their pictures were posted then more Fathers would stop sleeping with their daughters. This is a major issue in Dominica today, not someone in Miami being detained and gathering so many comments.

But guess what, those men will continue to raper their little girls because the public is not interested in knowing that, the public is not interested in seeing this stop. This is happening on a daily basis and yet no outcry. Help Save Dominica’s Children…… post the pictures of those men, especially fathers who are molesting their little girls.

For all those who are bashing DNO for doing their job, it’s not right. DNO has been able to remain unbiased in their reporting of news. Everyone is making comments about the validity of the website that is linked to the story. The truth is that everything is public record and if anyone really wanted to go to the “source” all they have to do is go to the Broward County Clerk of Courts website. The fact is she got arrested and yes she is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Either way, no one should be rejoicing in her family’s misfortune and the truth will come out. At the end of the day, everyone just has to wait for the truth to come out.

She appears to be a well-known individual within the Dominican circle, but I have never heard of her. A very beautiful, young lady.

Dominicans, let’s not rejoice – in a situation like that we need to help our people. Sometimes we think we are immune to petty things such as this and end up in a worse predicament. Ignorance is when one jumps to conclusion without first hearing and considering the facts/truth. A wise man first listens and speaks later.

Dominicans are jealous, malicious and seek to keep each other down and tend to be disappointed at the prosperity of their fellow Dominicans.

What you desire for another, will cleave unto your children and children’s children- whether good or bad.

I don’t know the story but things happen and you
could be very innocent about the act. I went
shopping last week and I accidently walked out
with a girl’s dress on my arm I realised it when
I was boarding the bus. I could have been arrested for stealing for something I did not do.
God see I was innocent he saved my life. I took
the dress next day to the store and told them
what happened. I thing God was testing to see if
I would keep a dress i did not pay for.

Things do happen innocently. i have had experience in the U.S walking out of a store with a stroller full of clothing items to be paid for. My sister and i were shopping and she was putting item on the baby’s stroller. the baby started crying so she asked me to take him outside. i did that. when i realized wat had happened i went back into the store. i also cud have been arrested.

i was researching the legal meaning of Petit (or Petty) Theft – 2nd degree and it means theft of items valuing leas than $100 – at least according to Florida laws.

@Robin, I agree with u 100%!I lived there for a while and they arrest for anything. If u get even angry about something or a person, the first phrase u hear is, “I’ll call the police”over and over again. They arrest u for nothing and if don’t give them money, they keep u in jail, until u pass before the judge. In some countries, they just make u pay for what u stole and that’s it.I am just asking my fellow Dominicans that they shouldn’t start pointing fingers at the victim because the storeowner and the likes are also are a gang of theives. They are just not caught yet!!

I agree 100% with u Robin. I lived there for a while, and I know they arrest u for anything. The Americans make it almost a hobby, always calling for the police. In some countries, they just let u pay for the article u stole and that’s it.(Anyway the storeowners know that he will lose more for going any farther with that affair). In America if u don’t give them money, they won’t let u out before seeing the judge. Fellow Dominicans and does who don’t know, just a little compassion to the dear lady, she needs your prayers. And don’t forget because she was arrested that the storeowner and the likes are innocent. They are a gang of theives that are not yet being caught.

……petit theft (aka petty theft) in the 2nd degree is depriving someone of their property that was worth LESS than $100. She can get up to 6 months in jail, 6 months probation, or be fined up to $500. This is not a serious crime, but is an arrestable offense, nevertheless. She will probably get a fine. America is all about money!

That is the U.N.’s America for you. The bankers can steal trillions and get away with it but the common person can’t get away with anything. Now they are saying that you are guilty until you prove yourself to be innocent. Nothing but the double standard. It was probably something cheap that she inadvertently walked out of the store with and had forgotten that she had it.

    July 16, 2012

This is a very unfortunate situation -one of our very own got arrested in a foreign land. Whether or not she is guilty this is sad. I’ve always found it amazing that we can comment negatively or show no compassion when someone falls. However, this is not new. The woman in the bible that was caught in adultery was accused by sinners like her. We are all guilty of some wrong regardless or our age, religion or economic status. Those who speak negatively have obviously failed to take a look in the mirror. Because we never get caught does not lessen our offenses. For those living in the US, going to jail can happen at any time. Residing and working in the US illegally, marrying for Green card, cheating on income taxes all these are grounds for arrest. These are crimes committed by “decent” people every day (these are not petit). Because we never get caught does not give us the right to comment on someone else. Also, you may not be living in the US but you benefit from your relatives living there and you have no idea of the risk they take to get the barrels and nice things to you. Today is Kathleen’s mishap tomorrow might be you, me, or a family member.
Don’t rejoice at the misfortune of another; instead pray for the person, yourself and your children. Daily self-examination would be helpful.
Kathleen, I am praying and will continue to pray that you receive mercy from the authorities in Florida.

Whether you dislike, hate, “cannot see” in our terms” the young lady is a not valid reason to wish bad intentions of someone in that position.. Think about it, imagine yourselves or someone close to you in her place, then your opinions would surely defer. Dominicans are too quick to lash at their own!! We don’t know the details of her case so you shouldn’t jump to conclusions especially when her visa/ passport, her job, her reputation and freedom is on the line… I would not like to hear that she is guilty but if she is, then so be it she will face their consequences. Also whether the social class of anyone, they shouldn’t be protected from the media, if and when a crime is committed, then the media has a right to report to the people of their wrongdoings, I find that the people in that country is too bias.

Why when other people’s names are on the news for theft and other stuff we don’t beg DNO to take it down? So because she have big job her name should not be reported? I know of people of very high standards who have stolen very miniscule items in stores. So stop being so biased Dominicans. They send you in jail here for anything. There are a lot of private jails in this place – it is big business. Have heard of people who get arrested because their kids walked off with things from the store. I always check, but I have seen things ended up at my home which I did not pay for occasionally. I have returned things to the store after I got outside the door already. People got to be very cautious in this place. Hopefully, the lady walked out the store with the item by mistake. I don’t blame DNO, but at the same time I was hoping to see a story. Hope Ms Cuffy can clear the air soon – I think that is a necessity.

My two cents: As a news agency DNO has the right to report whatever they want to report, however, DNO is also a medium via which Dominica is being promoted to the world. DNO therefore, could use a human filter to determine which stories they should and shouldn’t run as soon as the “beff” comes in an email or phone call. In as much as the information is on the internet, DNO needs to consider that this woman has family, friends, associates in and out of Dominica who are affected by the news. Can you even imagine what she may be going through? We are too quick to shed light on the “ugly” of our own sometimes. I do not know the lady, have never met her, but that piece of news is lacking and just seems salacious to me. Yes, she “allegedly” did something worth being arrested for but we don’t have all the details so just go easy. Where is our humanity? Whoever made DNO aware of the incident needs to look in the mirror, let’s hope they are the next Holy Person to walk the earth. Rejoicing in the plights of others is not something we should do at all. Hers is in front, whoever laughing, yours behind.

I really dont think that Kathleen stole that small item. I think she accidentally walked out with it – this could happen to the best of us particularly if the item is at the cashier’s counter and you pick it up there looking at it. Why would someone purchase over one hundred dollars worth of items and steal somehting worth less than $1.00.

Let us give our fellow dominican the benefit of the doubt. Kathleen would not do something like that. For those of us who want to be quick to judge my advise to you is be careful………… dont jump to judge.

I am very disappointed with this story and i think that DNO should not print this. Admin should be careful with what they show especially when it can affect someone’s reputation. Alot of us reading articles on DNO are very quick to judge and our sole purpose for reading is to add negative comments.

what about this article is demeaning? it is actually the comments made by Dominicans dat are demeaning. DNO printed a story. the only reason u want it down is because it is someone you care for. if it were not someone u care for, you could care less as to what DNO prints. Come DNO. Was this necessary? is it because of her husband’s popularity, so many people had worst offenses and they were never published, yes you are doing your job but this so wasn’t call for.

    Definition of Petit Theft:

The crime of Petit Theft, sometimes referred to as Petty Theft, involves the unlawful taking of property worth less than $300.

To prove the crime of Petit Theft, the State must prove that you took property from another person with the intent to:

Deprive the person of a right to the property or benefit of the property; or
Appropriate the property for personal use or for the use of another person not entitled to the use of the property.

The value of the property taken determines whether the crime is:

Petit Theft of the First Degree or
Petit Theft of the Second Degree

    Penalties for Petit Theft

The penalties for the crime of Petit Theft depend on the value of the property taken.
Petit Theft of the First Degree

It is is considered Petit Theft of the First Degree if:

The value of the property taken is worth less than $300, but more than $100; or
You have a prior theft conviction.

If convicted of Petit Theft of the First Degree, you could receive any combination of the following penalties:

    One year in jail,
    One year of probation, or
    A fine of up to a $1,000.

Petit Theft of the Second Degree

If the value of the property taken is worth less than $100, the crime is considered Petit Theft of the Second Degree.

If convicted of Petit Theft of the Second Degree, you could receive any combination of the following penalties:

    Six (6) months in jail,
Six (6) months of probation, or
    A fine of up to a $500.

In the grand scheme of things she is just another black woman from a cbbean island arrested for Petty theft For the sake of Dominica and her office I would have waited but guess what DNO publishes all stories. Somebody had to tell them that, so she must check her inner circle. IF it were anybody else there whole generation history would be here by now. If she do it, she damn wrong, what you all should be doing is getting her great legal help to have this charges dismissed and her record exponged, then have some PR in place to destroy this matter outright. You and those bashing DNO should be working at highlighting her work, her character and launching some serious press in the region.

I believe the young lady who have travelled to Miami, USA, China, germany, England all over on job related matters would want to steal a $2.00 item – have you ever shop at wallmart put the stuff under your arm and forgget it there, have you ever shop here in Dominica and forget to cash and item – if it is a small item it canfall in your purse it happens. Why when other people’s names are on the news for theft and other stuff we don’t beg DNO to take it down? So because she have big job her name should not be reported? But I don’t think people should blame DNO.

DNO is just informing Dominicans what has already been on the internet.

People see it all the time on DNO and other websites: so and so was arrested in a drug bust or a so and so was arrested for wounding etc….etc…

CNN and other news organization do it all the time. You people need to understand how the media operates.

To the point Dorival..it is that simple, I agree with you…doh blame the media..that is why it is called MEDIA!
People need to know the entirety of the story first. Arrest doesnt mean guilty, however, if one has receipts, they should match the content in the defendant’s bag…and there would not be the need for and arrest, mug shot and all that, rather simple questioning and solve the issue.

Although I am a firm believer that there are 3 sides to every story, I’m amazed at the number of persons here saying that the lady should not be persecuted because we don’t know the true/full story.
It’s funny how when it’s our friends and families, the cry against persecution is loud.

I have seen many a times on DNO when other people, and now, i’m starting to think it’s a social thing; with no societal status get crucified in the comments, all based on allegations. Yet, today… it’s all ” wait till you get the true facts before you condemn”

I do not know the story – but the fact remains – whether it was accidental or not – she was charged with a crime of THEFT, so technically, she is assumed a THIEF, until proven innocent. Like for all other alledged perpertrators, we must await the facts before we condemn.

So to her friends and family begging the commentators to not judge and rush to conclusions – please show the same respect when there are other accused persons in the limelight.

why everybody hollering at DNO for the story… it was already on a jailhouse website… once it is on the internet, it was guaranteed to be discovered by some media house whether locally, regionally or internationally.

DNO didnt arrest or publish the story first, they are just making Dominica aware of what’s going on…

    • Private
      July 16, 2012

However there are certain stories that we approach with caution due to the person, position and impact on the entire country. I know some people always say if it was a poor black person or if the person was from a small community but soem stories do not have much impact on our society whether they are posted on DNO or not. This is a critical one which you would not want posted locally or on a a radio talk show immediately unless all facts are received. There is no urgency is trying to see how much worse we can make the person and after say “well guess we misunderstood”. DNO and all media companies should take heed that they do not have to run with everything but investigate and put out a story after. Tell me what story is on the jail bird website….anyone arrested or taken in for questioning is entered in the police database in the US.

Kathleen, DOh worry. Rodney King took a bigger beating and won a million. Just make sure save those website to use as evidence that you were defamed.

The incident obviously happened in Coral Springs, where it is known to be a mostly white upscale neighborhood. The store obviously exaggerated this to the police who obviously had a field day with this. SO surely, Kathleen got the worse end of it. Anyway, there are a few Dominican lawyers in the area who can help you with your case and to start on the lawsuit, namely, Jarah McLawrence, Peter Loblack and others.

Dominicans too like to rejoice when they see someone mishap, but you are a good person you would not have paid your money to go to America to steal something for $2.00. Take care and God Bless!

She is innocent until proven guilty; however, this is just a news article. DNO did not accuse her of any wrongdoing nor will they decide her innocence or guilt. Jeezzzz. If my memory serves me right, no one rushed to the defense of the folks accused of robbing the Muslim Store. I do not know her, but I am praying that she is innocent. However, let us keep an open mind here.

DNO am disappointed you would publish something like this without having full details of the matter. Atleast you could have spoke, if you didn’t try, to a family member who could have given you better details. I think this is an attempt to dirty the name of such a beautiful person, even more so, someone who represents Dominica regional, etc. even the wording of the headline is to an attempt to dirty the young lady good name. I would request that you post or source the full story of what happened.

rubbish! So many things could happen to anyone of us.. I was in a store the other day my phone rang I walked out of the store with the goods in my hand because I was distracted.. I went to the car goods in my hands. I went back to the store no one noticed.. I could’ve gotten away with it.. as they put it its petty theft.. let’s get the full story first!

  131. Aye Dominique
    July 16, 2012

Petty theft though it’s a small offense store owners take this very very serious because this makes and breaks their bottom line. It is very easy to walk out of a store with something u did not pay for and no amount of explaining is going to cut it for you. This is why every time I go to a store and I touched items but did not make any purchase, before exiting the store, I check my hands, my bag and pocket and ensure that I did not place anything in there by error, because believe me it happens.

These store owners are very serious about that, once u get convicted some of them hang your photo in their stores so everyone who walks in and out of the store can actually see you stole from them.

I hope Kathy gets out of this victorious because this is not Dominica in any form or shape, it can be for a $2.00 item these people think u are trying to rub them.

This is America for you, nobody trust nobody, and it really is a dog eat dog race.

I’m sorry to hear that, Kathy is a cool cucumber but bad things do happen to good people.

    Best of luck Kathy!

DNO I am not faulting you for this story, neither asking for a cover up. Clearly someone leaked it to you. However in the interest of DOMINICA, the OFFICE SHE HOLDS and her OWN reputation, can I implore you to now bring to life the entire factual story as it stands. Hundreds of people get arrested every day in the US, rich people do stupid things, however it appears from what I am hearing that though she was arrested, there really was NO theft involved and this happens to the best of people everyday in the US. Please I beg get the details. If she is at fault then so be it, but it would be prudent to give her a fair shot at clearing up this stituation.

Admin: We have been trying to get the full story and to get those with more information on the matter to agree to speak with us. We will continue trying.

People, don’t judge the woman. I had a situation where I went shopping and I had an item in my hand when I ran into someone I had not seen for a long time. We chatted for a few minutes and then I walked out of the store only to realize I had not paid for the item. I immediately walked back into the store and paid for it. Had I been apprehended, who would have believed me if I told them it was a mistake?

Moral of the story? Although some things may seen as clear as day, if you dig a little further, it may not be what if first appeared to be.

Cut the lady some slack until more details come out.

Also stop sensationalizing this story. That is rude and disrespectful. The fact is the matter is petty theft of the second degree usually, and I use that word strongly, gets a little fine of around 300$ and c’est ça. That can hardly be considered to be in “hot water”. Finally, in America one is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY by a court of law… Remember that folks.

    • Tom
      July 16, 2012

It is not a matter of sensationalizing the story. She is Head of Product Development at Discover Dominica. When one had such an important position, one has to be be careful. Why cant it be considered “HOT WATER”? Because it is, according to you US$300.00 / EC$801.00?

      It is the principal!

But it’s not the extent of the crime really is it?? If this is true it is telling on the character of the person and it can tarnish her image given her position within the Ministry of Tourism. Thus whether the fine for this crime is US$300 or not is of no issue.

She is not in “Hot Water” Due to the nature of the crime. She is in “Hot Water” Due to the potential Repercussions of the crime, IE: Loss of Visa, Deportation, Loss of Job, Tarnished Reputation etc

Not saying she’s guilty or innocent as I am hearing stories that she is being falsely accused as she stole nothing or “attempted” to steal nothing but all should wait for the outcome. Personally the only interest I have is that Dominica does not come under fire “if” a top representative like Miss Cuffy is found guilty.
